Live

June 20, 2026

Mark Hilliard Wilson, guitar, with Peter Nelson-King, voice
Prospect Congregational United Church of Christ, Seattle

Mark played a selection of pieces old and new that he announced from the stage, so I will not attempt to list the program

musics shaped by the interactions
between the hands
and a fretboard
and an arrangement of strings

the polyphonic voices
associate themselves
with particular congruencies
of finger and string
and location
within the finger figures

the practiced sound of the instrument
is almost impossibly lovely
and it features a pleasant and grounding set
of extraneous sounds
(fingers on wires)
keeps it real

this was a most pleasant afternoon recital

June 25, 2026

Neil Welch, Scott Robinson
Wayward Music Series, curated by Haley Freelund
The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

Neil Welch

pitch is an identifier of sound groups
we use it
to say
this sound
and that sound

a piece that arises
from thoughts
concerning underground mushroom forces
eruptions from below
where most of them lives

last piece
with the big bass sax
sounds must be coaxed
from its underbelly
with some piano tones
and hanging rattles

endings are gently massaged

Scott Robinson

brief high cries
descent into lower registers
these breaths
became pitch events
leading ear
through its space
the thoughts are clear
blatant Hungarian quasi-clarinet
(taragato)
finding two cornets in one
must be a device
that switches
from straight bell
to a built-in mute

and three different saxophones
including an obsolete C Melody Sax
and bass with range to die for

Together

and together
Neil on soprano
and Scott on bass

Uprising - Steve Layton [from Bedtime Stories]

we count in location
we recount in relocation
inexorable alternation

the potion brews
molecules bond
and rebond
it drains off
but count remains

Sonata in C Major, Kk. 330 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

another on fortepiano

used less as a contrast device
than as a means of articulating the shapes of phrases

Two Hungarian Recruiting Dances, S241 - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

elegant affairs
for the officer class

early early Liszt
so still in an essentially Galant style
with the merest hint
of dark Schubertian shades

the pretranscendant Liszt

Album for the Young, Part 1, Op. 68, 1-18 - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

touch
as contrast among
and common aspect among

the common touch
(heh heh)
and contrast within
a sequence of articulated groups of phrases
distinguished by their varieties of touch
a primer in how to do so
by the master his own self
for beginners

sparing of the power moves
available to a more fully grown hand
the pedaling required
is not Scriabin fancy

Wilder Reiter
touches accents

as the pieces progress
their gradual expansion of scale
instructs prolonged concentration

Lyric Pieces, Book II, Op. 38 - Edvard Grieg - Håkon Austbø

amusement
Ken Benshoof admired these pieces
I think he was fond
of how focused they are
they don't move on
to new material
that isn't nearly
not new
the only real complaint
I might have
is that they don't break new ground
as a music
they are content and settled
all debts paid in full

but they sure are pleasant to hear
status quo unchallenged

6 Idylles: I. Allegretto leggiero, Op. 24 #1 - Agathe Backer Grøndahl - Sara Aimée Smiseth

this one wanders close to moody shades
and lingers

2 Preludes, Op. 67 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

murkier portions settle
in a low mist

moves smoothly
upon many swiftly vibrating legs

June 22, 2026

Save It, Pretty Mama - Louis Armstrong and His Savoy Ballroom Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

decorative
gussied up
stanza forms

Broadway trope
hey there folks
suddenly I'm in love

addressing the immediate past of song
a sketch demo

warning
against a risky person

contrasting dynamics
stanza by stanza

talk like a pirate night
at the local pub

Snohomish Mash-Up Piece #3 - S. Eric Scribner [from Odds and Ends]

a music full of sounds in relation

The Writing On The Wall - Lost In Space [from Live at The Player's Lounge]

performing selves
on a common stage

song
(broad sense)
as a party game
keep it lively

Ace - Rawn Jawn [from Dirt Cult Records: You Don't Have To Be Cool]

the vocal microphone
has an unfortunate ringiness to it

It's All Right With Me (incomplete) - Bill Evans [from Some Other Time / The Lost Session from the Black Forest]

at some point
there's no reason for a record company
to not release
all of the sound they've recorded
even edited for clarity
and to protect the innocent
here's Bill thinking a thing through

Hula Hoop - T. Bone Burnett [from Proof Through The Night]

verbal imitation
of the Sun Records echo effect

Untitled Hidden Track - REM [from Green]

this song
tells us what it is for
like labels on vitamins

U.S.A. (Ogalala Sioux Indian) - Jerry Gartett [from The World Sings Goodnight]

premise:
all peoples sing infants to sleep
possible
perhaps even plausible
yet unconfirmed
ill-defined term "peoples"

Intervention - Madonna [from American Life]

hard edges to the tracks this is made of
they are not in the room at all
not making sound?
you are erased from existing

I Will Forever Hate Roses - Dolly Parton [from Backwoods Barbie]

romantic disappointment
is a curse
upon a memory

bump the key up a fret!

Black Jesus + Amen Fashion - Lady Gaga [from Born This Way]

at the heart of what fashion sells
is a command to conform

Black Cloud - Whitney Ballen [from You're a Shooting Star - I'm A Sinking Ship]

anxious sensitivity
to vibes
emanations
the creepies
all the congregation of them
another bivalent dynamic
stanza to stanza

a poem
in lines of pitches

Marie Antoinette - Wayne Shorter [from The Classic Blue Note Recordings]

post war coolness
nouveau suave
or urban social aspiration
politely sophisticated
nouveau Galant
shaken not stirred

Respectable Street - XTC [from Nancy's Mix]

in the original Nancy's Mix
the compilator skipped the introductory bit
that sounds like a dictaphone recording

My Baby's Gone - Girl Trouble [from Hit It Or Quit It]

writing a song
to a microphone
and related equipment
the sound
is
the score
they read
I guess
she's gone away

C.R.E.A.M. (a capella) - Wu-Tang Clan [from Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)]

rhyme as accent

The Closer I Get To You (with Beyoncé) - Luther Vandross [from Dangerously In Love]

a delicate negotiation

June 23, 2026

My Prolix Verses Fade - Christian Asplund [from Viola]

the edge of sound making
scrutinized
the business end
of scraping strings with strings
an activity
of making sound
this music
seems to eschew
the tool
of unity by common referential framework
or generation

Did Your Mama? - Holly Palmer [from I Confess]

bivalent dynamic stanza differentiation
seems to be a situational conceit of nurse to patient?

Freaks Only - Red Ribbon [from Dark Party]

I'm an idi-idiot

Top Of The Mountain - The Staple Singers [from Written in Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos]

from gospel
the dialog between lead singer and backups
also the counsel and witness

Killer Joe - The Kingsmen [from The Very Best of The Kingsmen]

broadly cartooned figure
of late adolescent culture

Piano Player - J. K. Randall, Matthew Rosenblum, Marjorie Tichenor, Daniel Warner [from Inter/Play]

peering through cloudy glass
lengthy segments
with pauses
quite pronounced
between them
then
sneaking in
their edges
as though
the soundful segments
were negotiating a path
through a forest
of pause segments
as though they they had been pre-arranged

this is the room
of moving slowly
Crumar and sax
like gulls

what
in the music
stands for
the player's sharing a communication event
where do we hear it happening?

in the shaping
of each sound
to each sound
with trust among them

why should such a  conversation
need
to be a music
even if it is?

Crumar chuckles low in the belly

antiphonal

punching buttons at prescribed times
which button
isn't crucial
that it be pushed
is
but only exactly
at the prescribed times

these sounds represent objects
not nodes within a statement
or shared communication event
none of that!

though
surreptition abounds
play on!

they're listening
back to the buttons

that belongs to our image of the past

constructed from disparate source materials

Thanks 4 Nothin' - Mariah Carey [from E=MC2]

like a silent movie accompaniment

adds to the story
oracularly

Under The Big Top - Rachel Harrington [from City of Refuge]

aerial act metaphor
devotion of partners

Pseudo-Yoik - Jaakko Mäntyjärvi
"Quando son più lontan" from Madrigali - Morten Lauridsen
Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine - Eric Whitacre

"Stone" from The Earthmakers - Carol Sams

At harbor, waiting for wind - Sheila Bristow
"Confiteor" from Mass in B minor, BWV 232 - Johann Sebastian Bach

It was with great anticipation and pleasure that Karen and I wandered out to North Queen Ann to hear Aaron Keyt's new work for choir and two cellos, ably performed by Harmonia Chorus. As I have come to expect, the poetry of his composing voice sneaks in under the radar of a deceptively disarming surface. I wasn't taking notes that evening, but the entire concert was a lovely thing to be at.

{NB: not played in the above order, and I didn't try to keep track}

start with an additive passacaglia
for nine guitars
and some canons

guitar orchestra
as a means of amplification
what would a clavichord orchestra sound like?
does the sound board's expanded area
(as perceived)
proceed arithmetically
or is the math more interesting?

nine guitarists
nine ways of being intent

a wind quintet
some solo pieces
a donkey a bullfrog and a dog
a whole story
trumpet and guitar
then electric guitar bassoon and tuba
to roar a solid roar
then a song

Madrigals, Book IV: Voi pur da me partite, anima dura - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

a vowel sound includes its harmony
and its vector potentialities

Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt, SWV 380 - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

the system I have developed
and followed
for choosing what comes up
in my listening
results
in a spot check sample
that situates that music-item
within the sequence of history
start with early
go till the recent
then back around
to the start
clearly
this must color each item
as well as provide it
with a particular
kind
of context

Ich dank dir, lieber Herr, BuxWV 194 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

which allows a method
of hearing the change of stylistic fashion
but also allows insight
into shifts in tonal thinking

Premier livre de clavecin: Triosieme Ordre (ut) : Les Matelotes Provencales. Gayement - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

elegant frivolity
ruffles and needlework

Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Ton Koopman

tonalities are related to each other actively
the lines of which they are made
may seem to ascend and descend
but the tonalities themselves
aren't related in the up down metaphor
they arrange themselves around their common tones

March 3, 2025

Sonata in E Major, Kk. 264 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

accumulations of balance
and of abrupt articulations

String Quartet in D minor, K. 421 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - The Alban Berg Quartet

phrase balance
more by downbeat count
than by absolute length

pay mind
to the moments between phrases
and figures
and
to sequences of figures
entupling up the sizes
of parts of balance

less overtly operatic
than is usually the case with Mozart
more of a danciness to it

Quartet in G Major, Wq. 95 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - Nicholas McGegan, Catherine Mackinstosh, Anthony Pleeth, Christopher Hogwood

phrases are constructed of clearly audible figures
each phrase a fresh trajectory and portioning

long held pedal
once it moves
its line goes steadily

String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 71 #3 - Franz Joseph Haydn - The London Haydn Quartet

last moment nips and tucks being made
napkins folded just so
straight edged place settings
dramatic centerpieces

sequences are a device of tonal transformation

aloft by pigeon mail
(text only
no packages)

swan songs
end up with the pigeons

true communion at a distance?
possible?
not?

massless as fae
do we inhabit
our synapses?

possibly the first Chopin I learned
back in the day
a tenderly drawn key

Slavonic Dance in A-flat Major, Op. 46 #3 - Antonín Dvořák - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, John Farrer

where
within the balance
the thumb
is applied
the art
of written out phraseological rubato
riffs on a music box cyclicity
breaking free

Etude in C-sharp minor, Op. 42 #5 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

a study in a method of singing
between the hands

KE SJ DS 830602 (side 1) - Keith Eisenbrey, Sarah Johnson, Dan Sedia [recorded at Bard College, June 2, 1983]

we emerge in dialog
memory:
I remember that I participated in a bunch of these
at the time
but I recall of them
only a few embarrassing moments
(lapses of my musicality)
and
that I was there

Sarah was her own different drummer
to which Dan and I
circle
in our pitch world

recitative accompaniment:
a playacted dialog
with the recitativer
a fit theme for improvisation

I'm noisy and inconsiderate
but
am trying to work something out pianistically
(I had been playing piano for dance classes the year before
(not pleasant)
so there may have been some frustration being released)
winding down music box
weariness
some chords

I'm here
I'm listening

A Three Year Old Could Do That - U-Men

art punk

J Awakes - Keith Eisenbrey [September 4, 1993]

and other nonsense
what's the matter kitty?
what's the matter?
what's the maddür
making polysyllables
blanky and bunbun
happy kitty
what's the kitty's name?

spontaneous language spout
in all the pitch registers he can reach
vowel control

Work / Architecture / Unity / And / The (final edit) - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded at Jack Straw Cultural Center, April 29, 2003]

regardless of my feelings about this
in terms of success
at my original idea for it
it remains what it is
so
what is it?
a collection of widely spaced sounds
piano as percussion
caged sounds
exquisitely recorded
in dialog
with modernism
(or post):
the neo-classical impulse
of modernism's gaze
fixed
upon a post-modern sensibility?
does it go on a bit long?
possibly?
why is that an issue?

Animals - The True Bugs [from 25 Songs]

we are moving imperceptibly slow
guitar strummy
hook based
tightly circular lines

Gradus 225 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [May 6, 2013]

a narrow aperture of tonal allowance
A Natural
Enforcer
(how
rude)
Nearly A
is fine
(if loud enough)
it's the thought
(that
counts)

the As don't always play nicely together
they can get snippy and sulky

A Tale In Thirds - Tom Swafford [from Violin Improvisations]

in the person of a narrator who voices all the characters

Sinfonia 1 (clavichord) - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded April 8, 2023]

on clavichord
begin
in my most disarming neo-classical manner

Agggravatin' Papa - Sophie Tucker [from Really The Blues]

rhyme as quickly as possible
in the set up
gives the payoff
room to spread out

Midnight Mama - Jelly Roll Morton, Frances Hereford [from Really The Blues]

in the tempo
of a character
in a stage act
this song
is a complement
to the last
(and she sings
"Midnight Papa")

Jonah, Come Out The Wilderness - Roaring Lion with Cyril Monrose String Orchestra [from Goodbye, Babylon]

sure are a bunch of winds in that string orchestra

Chaconne for Piano, Op. 29 - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle]

a few clunkers
but I hold it together pretty well for the most part

The Green Automobile - Allen Ginsberg [from Holy Soul, Jelly Roll]

the greater driver
eastward to the tomb town

cashed a great check in my skull bank

an epistle
we
will be real heroes now

More Than You Know - Morgana King [from Sings The Blues]

give you the brain you need !!
celeste!

Come Back And See - Chris Kenner [from Land of 1000 Dances]

a blues
such as
you done
to me

(Sittin' On) The Dock of The Bay - Otis Redding [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

I suppose the sound effects
were a nod to the psychedelicals

March 6, 2025

Gimme Danger - The Stooges [from Raw Power]

sounds like a cowbell back there
keeping the beat
for factory efficiency

Rich Girl - Nina Simone [from Baltimore]

social confrontational

I'm Stepping Out - John Lennon [from Milk and Honey]

still in workshop

Assorted Fancy - Keith Eisenbrey [February 25, 1988]

playing with tape speed:
my question was
how
the long-term rhythms
and tonalities
sounded
sped up
and the only way to do that
with tools found around the house
was using tape speed
(record at slow speed
play back at high speed
rinse and repeat)
of my Sonata in 2 Movements (1988)
I made several iterations
(wouldn't you?)
and it gets pretty silly by the end

also
a certain Xenoic format:
each iteration
half the length (more or less)
of the last

motive construction

16 Clavichord Improvisations (from Wayward in Limbo)

One of the shining lights of the local music scene during the pandemic lockdown was Nonsequitur's Wayward in Limbo series: 134 commissioned recordings of new work by local musicians. I was honored to be asked for a contribution. The essential intimacy of the clavichord seemed fitting for the occasion, and I offer this series of short improvisations for your enjoyment.

Preface

"This new edition of Lord Jim will be succeeded, we suppose, by the rest of Mr Conrad's works - those that are already published, and the many, as we hope, that are still to come. But will they all appear in the binding which disfigured The Shadow Line and now afflicts us once more in Lord Jim? Will they all be of a sad green colour, and sprinkled with chocolate-brown nautical emblems such as might be stamped upon club note-paper, or upon some florid philanthropic pamphlet drawing attention to the claims of sea-captains' widows? As a general rule we submit to the will of publishers in silence, but it is time to cry out when they ask us to disfigure our shelves upon so large a scale as this. It is not a question of luxury, but of necessity: we have to buy Mr Conrad; all our friends have to buy Mr Conrad; and that Mr Conrad of all people should be robbed even of a shred of that dignity and beauty which he more than any living writer is able to create seems quite distressingly inappropriate."

Virginia Woolf, from "Lord Jim [Lord Jim. A Tale (J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., 1917) by Joseph Conrad.]"

Totems and Reflections Part 1
Mark Hilliard Wilson at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

Reflections on a Glacier - Tom Baker

Totems - Pascal Sasseville Quoquochi

? - Diomedes Cato

? - Graeme Koehne

? - Josquin de Pres

The names of the pieces
were projected upon a screen
but my eyes couldn't make them out
I believe there was one called "Eagle"
and another called "Owl"

body of guitar
is held close
whisper close
the body's voice
sings
from an embrace
the tenderness
of the situation
is present
in the music
that reaches us
therefrom

January 12, 2025

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

to the extent
that the lyrics are opaque
as to their application
or reference
the whole
is designed
to attract some
to within the veil
and to repel others
out
from the circle

Something So Right - Paul Simon [from The Essential Paul Simon]

an epistolary poem
mixtape ready

There Came a Wind Like a Bugle - George Perle - Bethany Beardslee, Morey Ritt

the music of the sung line
describes the music of the piano part
which stands in for the lexical referent
of the sung words

Rely - Contempo & Treehouse [from Bard Sampler 82 & 83]

it lies there
with undeniable features
but is clearly half-assed in intent

Retrato de Euchababilla en la Noche - Keith Eisenbrey - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey

I have two files on the hard drive of this piece
one was ripped from the original cassette tape
and this one was ripped
from a copy of that tape
that I had made a bunch of
to give away
this rip
is notably muddier
and the original
is far from pristine

the sequence of pitches
the piano plays
was composed in 1986
in Port Macquarie, NSW
I used it later
as an experiment
in composing
with both mod-12 derived pitch sets
and mod-17 derived pitch sets
{my Toccata of 2002}

this version
is a good example
for me
of the mistake
of trying to accomplish an aesthetic end
by processing the signal
rather than
composing the signal
more effectively
to begin with

it has its charms
but there's an undercurrent of fraud about it

Group Variations II for computer - Benjamin Boretz (remastered by Paul Lansky) [from Open Space 5]

a sea of pulses
and their numbers
and their angles to each other
and their rates of flows
across their terrain

even the sax playing is pretty good here

Ericulation - Steve Kennedy [from State's Exhibit]

dense manufacturing sounds

of aural interest

Madrigals, Book IV: Anima mia, perdona: No. 2, Che se tu se ’l cor mio - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Rossana Bertini, Claudio Cavina, Giuseppe Maletto, Marcello Vargetto, Cristina Miatello

song
as stylized poetry

Geistliche Chor-Music, SWV 369-397: No. 5, Gieb unsern Fürsten, SWV 373 - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

the Word
as a theatrically presented music
right there in church

Der Tag, der ist so freudenrich, BuxWV 182 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

solid and firm
in plain words
an assurance of authority

Was Mir Behagt, Ist Nur Die Muntre Lagd, BWV 208 - Johann Sebastian Bach - The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, Ton Koopman

an image
of the secular world
mirrored back
a theatrical presentation
of stylized dramatic poetry
as a musical entertainment

a plot that makes sense
just distracts from the musical entertainment

the voices are dancing with their fellows
in figured motions
to amuse
those that could afford such extravagances
a wedding* perhaps
seems more likely
as we move along

orchestrated
so that
instrument groups
stand for the figures of the music
as they create it
among themselves
like Busby Berkeley

{*nope: birthday for the Duke-y}

Keyboard Sonata in F Major, Kk. 257 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

music presented
as a contraption

Sinfonia in D Major, Op. 18 #3 "Overture to Endimone"- Johann Christian Bach - Failoni Orchestra, Hans Gmür

music
appropriate to an occasion of propriety
appropriate to
but not contingent upon that occasion
any will do

in certain figures
such as an appoggiatura
the two tones
are linked
as a single item
(with accoutrement)

in certain other figures
such as that
between the boundary tones
of two appoggiaturas
the two tones
are de-linked
they are not an item
and yet
structurally
a pair
a different sort of interval
paired
across
an articulation

Symphony in B minor, Wq. 182/5 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - English Consort, Trevor Pinnock

discontented
harrumphs about the house
barking orders

Sonata in F Major, K. 332 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Mitsuko Uchida

is it
with the overtly dramatic thrust
of Mozart
that we begin to feel
a certain impatience
with those first-movement repeats?

where the parts of the exposition
don't tell a story
it is easier to understand them
as places to be
rather than as a melody
to sing
in its proper narrative sequence
within a transpiration of events

contrast to
chairs in a room

it discomforts
to relive an event
but not
to sit
in the same chair

cadence within the prevailing figuration scheme
as neat as a little courtesy bow

String Quartet in G Major, Op. 54 #1 - Franz Joseph Haydn - Tatrai Quartet

Haydn's exposition parts
are definitely furnishings

this movement might be a window
through which we stare vacantly

some rooms and times are sunnier

Mass in D Major, Op. 123 "Missa Solemnis" - Ludwig van Beethoven - English Baroque Soloists, The Monteverdi Choir, John Eliot Gardiner, Charlotte Margione, Catherine Robbin, William Kendall, Alastair Miles

this dub seems faded
as though heard through a scrim
the dynamic contrast
is flattened
turning it up helps some

Gloria's ending:
a cadence
within the prevailing figuration scheme
(and born of it)
(no longer such a neat little courtesy bow)

Abschied, D. 957 #7 - Franz Schubert - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Gerald Moore

on a fine day
a brave face

Impromptus sur en théme de Clara Wieck, Op. 5 - Robert Schumann, Eric La Sage

the image
of an improvising imagination
its written-down-ness
obscures the probability
that they were nearly
if not completely
transcriptions of improvisations
they certainly want to seem that way
a cultural obsession
with direct expression
intimate access
to the creative impulse

what are
the (our) cultural signifiers
of such direct access?

Prelude in A minor, Op. 28 #2 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

a patterned floor
of hollow spaces
upon which
the best that can be done
as sorry as it is
under the circumstances
is done

Abschied - Hugo Wolf - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daniel Barenboim

neither such a fine day
nor so brave a face

Allegro Appassionata - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

Symphony in Riffs - Benny Carter [from That Devilin' Tune]

Sewing On The Mountain - C*** Creek Girls [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

moral propaganda
sewing and reaping

Four Transcriptions from Emerson (mid 1930's): No. 3 - Charles Ives - Charles Ives [from Charles Ives plays Charles Ives]

there is a threshold
between the realms
of recordings of historical interest
and the science of sound recovery
(noise removal)
and
the crudsome filters of the noise artists
(a short jump to psychedelia too)

Quatre Petites Prières de Saint François - Francis Poulenc - Robert Shaw Festival Singers, Robert Shaw

plush
embracing
pure from the heart

I Heard About You - Charlene Arthur [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

I guess it's not her first rodeo

Istn't It a Pity - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan sings George Gerswhin]

a song
as a single utterance of sentiment
drawn out
over multiple stanzas

White Christmas - Darlene Love [from A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector]

strange
how a music
can feel appropriate
to a time of year
music's seasonal aisle

never been such a day
in old LA
timely
in a horribly sad way

Aufwärts - Karlheinz Stockhausen

I trust
that few would sit down
to whatever these instruments are
in their homes
to play their parts in this
for their own enjoyment
or
to share with friends

it is
not to be enjoyed
but appreciated
worshiped
music
to impress
not express
after all
we are hard-nosed intellectuals here
performative seriousness

the isolation
of each player
becomes almost poignant

I wonder
if this is one of those improv sessions
he attached his name to

small sounds amplified
amid big sounds left alone

The Last Milonga
Mark Hilliard Wilson, with Leanna Keith, Kristine Rominsky, and Peter Nelson-King
Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

I didn't really try to keep up with what was what
as it went by
so
here's what I wrote down

terroir
sprout from the earth
rhythm drum
Milonga
entangled cowboy music
ensorcells from the motion
it will be true
draped from melody
softly to the ground
a passacaglia follows
march of the troops
silence in the night
evening falls
and settles
the earth rhythm
reclaims its floor
transformed
Darius Milhaud with Leanna
earth and air
a bit of that old metrical modulation
Pastorka?
with Kristine
whither it blows
it goes
a pleasant morning
happy breeze
the history of the Tango
Piezzola? {NB: nope, Piazzola}
like Chopin waltzes
this depicts
an actual
imaginary
tango
or several
mid movie
sad montage
with time
comes resignation
and long experience
time now for decadence
and dissolute doings
a song
of dialogue
from an opera
with Peter
a prayer
Ravel Habanera
dancing around the end of nothing
with trumpet

a lovely healing concert thanks to all involved!
