"'Oh no! That hated race, those Phrygian fates opposed
to mine! Why didn't they perish on Sigeum's fields?
Why won't these losers lose? Why didn't they burn
in burning Troy?'"

Motet: Laetatus sum - Marc-Antoine Charpentier - Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet [from Vespres à la Vierge]

tripping right along

step by step accumulation

the text is held tenderly

Sonata in D minor, Kk. 176 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

differing figures
joined by their metrical placement
these figures all begin on the upbeat
or
joined by their subsequence
to a common supersequent figure
points in the past
do not recede
at any kind of even rate
our analysis of time's continuous passage
is at variance
with our experience
of music's past moments

Sonata in C minor, Op. 111 - Ludwig van Beethoven - Stephen Kovacevich

he really grunts and growls along with it
yuck
underneath the Sturm und Drang
it keeps coming back
to a quiet shelter
then hurls itself back in

the more often a pitch returns
the less tenable it seems to be

Waltz in D-flat Major, Op. 64 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Alfred Cortot (1943)

Doctor Jazz - Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers [from Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers, Chicago Days]

early big band
clown car orchestra
beneath the slapstick
the embryo
of Sun Ra's Arkestra
in costume

Nobody's Darling - Cumberland Ridge Runners [from Evans 78s]

I wonder
in the isolated rural West
as in other isolated areas of the Americas
the people were forced to entertain themselves
to a greater extent
and into more recent times
than in the larger towns and cities
was it here
that Country Music arose
as the recorded residue of that tradition
as it came to an end
in the train wreck of modern culture

Me, Myself and I (take 1) - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day, The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

clever grammatical word play was in fashion
from Broadway days
we blame Cole Ira and Irving

The G_____ - Charlie Parker [from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes]

when the changes come back around to the top
it might be analogous to a tonal cadence
and it does enter into
how the structure of the song is perceived
a kind of reset button
what is different
is the sense of journeying to get there
that is
specifically dramatic potentiation

Isn't This a Lovely Day - Billie Eckstein, Sarah Vaughan [from The Irving Berlin Songbook]

a romantic
caught in the rain song

Driving Guitars (Ventures Twist) - The Ventures [from Walk Don't Run]

dance music

Banned Rehearsal 115 - Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 22, 1987]

tongue drum starts it
then a flute of some kind
then a guitar string being rubbed
distant gales
far outside
behind walls and shutters
vocals on a liquid
vowels droning and swooping
settling into a steadiness
the word window is used
then picked up in imitation
the drone expands and rhythmifies
take the elevator not the stairs
becomes a song
and difficult to step off
spins off
stops
all stop
the sunlight in the middle of the night
a basketball
not the court
or
a device was activated
flute
and doing some
my serious business with pots and pans
some thing may be sizzling on the stove
back to our muddles and daddies
a device is activated
where the light goes out
tongue drum and click stick percolate and tap
subdued throughout
echoed on devices
windows in muddles

{from my journal entry of June 25, 1988:
slow a song gathers
take the elevator by Neal
then echoes
window by Aaron
on a chant-tone
some cookin' by Anna
why do things get in a muddle, Daddy?}

Buggin' Out - A Tribe Called Quest [from Low End Theory]

metabrag
a brag about the qualities of their bragging

Banned Rehearsal 472 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [November 8, 1997]

we jump right in
torpedoes be damned
forte eruptions from the piano
fill the keyboard with pounding
ever stalwart Uncle W
ever steady on the tiller
electric guitar taking potshots from all sides
bring out the big drums
ring the bell
ring the bell
hostile waters
partially subdued
we bang on stuff

Aaron growls and barks German words
we come to a safer harbor
we sing at the moon in canine polyphony
a calmer Aaron emerges amid the jingly bells
oh dear Isaac's a fuss
we do trend noisy
fingery tuniness wanders through the din
overtalking
outshouting
Keith sermonizes against wine
party drums pounding now
inciting a temperance riot
with harsh whistles unpent
synthesizer or guitar hard to say
might just be Neal singing
solo voluntary
is it time for a rousing hymn?
not yet a tape
a march
by land it is then
ring the bell incessantly
now for the hymn to rouse
A Thousand Years of Prohibition
everybody's favorite drinking song
lift up your eyes
behold the Dawn
the kazoos are a nicely unhinged touch
and the yelping dog honks
dreams of yesterday
and Schubert
somewhat the worse for wear

{from my journal entry of September 27, 2005:
a slowish spine of a chorale
bristling with drumming on drums and piano
and else
a list of shouted German words
battling texts
gets silly
some sound glitches
not like the usual ones
hard to say from whence they arise
certainly a noisy
succumbs to cleverness}

Praying Mantis - Curve - Jarrad Powell [from Natural Selection]

an increasing population
of regularly irregular pulse generators
a pitched rain

a swarm emerges
drips from twigs and leaves

Consider the Birds 14 - Keith Eisenbrey [February 3, 2007]

a sparse population
of shy hoots and toots
patience may be rewarded
with a slightly more vehement hoot
and even some clicks here and there

96 Rocks Promo Mistress Bridget - Specyphyi [from Nine Songs]

a 30 second radio spot in which the band Specyphi makes sounds briefly

Real Sick Maniac - Your Mother Should Know [recorded live at Victory Lounge, March 27, 2017]

the urge to shout and scream in public or private
has always been a strange one to me
one of those male bonding things
none of which ever felt like a thing I needed

Damage in Your Wake - Daniel Husser [from 1 Month Challenge]

starts in an inchoate mood
focuses into a song lyric for a verse
then is snuffed out

Veni, Fvb 107 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

a cascading fountain
just long enough
for a few sips of tea

Memphis Frolic - Rag Williamsons' Beale Street Frolic Orchestra [from Allen Lowe's Turn Me Loose White Man]

loose jointed
good time
music
for loose joints

I'm a Steady Rollin' Man - Robert Johnson [from The Complete Recordings]

the opening salvo
nearly identical in every song he does that's a blues
is like announcing
I'm getting on the blues train for this one
and a like riff gets him out
it's like a door

Y_____ Gal - Lead Belly [from Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Lead Belly Legacy Volume 1]

I don't know
whether the term is considered derogatory or offensive
but it isn't mine to use anyway

he builds the whole song on repeating it like a taunt
wagging tongues

Five - Bill Evans [from New Jazz Conceptions]

a study pianistic
the way the metrical sense shifts
is almost baroque
Schützian

April 13, 2022

Concerto - Samuel Barber - Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin, John Browning

1
in a great hurry to get ahead of itself
promptly finding itself isolated and harassed
climbs heights
but awkward on the way back
did the soloist wander off
there they are
sad in their surroundings
works hard to make noise
out of its time by about 50 years
too many recognizable figures
echoing back through the orchestra
an untransformative echo chamber

2
a dreary day

3
time to run
energy must be expended
or there will be no applause
everything within narrow bounds
can't be loosed
a constrained life

Peace of Mind - Paul Revere and The Raiders [from The Legend of Paul Revere]

the title is underlined in the song
with a choral setting
then a call and response
a preaching type number

Attica State - John Lennon, Yoko Ono [from Some Time In New York City]

topical support songs don't age well
empty gesture at this pass
possibly different at the time
though one wonders who would listen that wasn't already on board

Plein Chant - Elaine Barkin - Harvey Sollberger [from Open Space 12]

this is a place a human can be at
each moment
along each reach
in every corner

Genesis - Walt Wagner [from The Evening Muse]

not the bible story

William Tell Overture (Closing Section) -  Gioachino Rossini [from 100 Greatest Classics]

starting with the JP Patches opening oboe solo
then the Lone Ranger
only the parts that pop culture has deafened us to

Fever - Madonna [from Erotica]

industrial strength cover
she barely lets the tune out from inside its smallest possible ambitus

Battle for Britain (the Letter) - David Bowie [from Earthling]

oblique narrative fault lines
slip the whole into a part
drummer is having a vigorous workout

April 14, 2022

PCKEE 020310 - Pete Comley, Keith Eisenbrey [ca. March 10, 2002]

with Pete's magic
I seem to be doing things on the guitar
that I am not capable of accomplishing
swarms of signal creatures
nibble at the edges of the surface of this and that
and at the distinctions between that and this
signal is ultimate homogeneity
guitar has been sucked into radioland
the space of outer chatter
robots make industrial adjustments
the guitar chatters on and on
a constant nuisance
wreaking a terrifying vengeance
on those who disbelieve
it's unnatural
swarms of disembodifying sounds
roam the land

California Quail

When Birds Fly South - Back Burner [from Simmer On]

bluegrass adjacent
some rhythmic strumming
fancy picking
come in anywhere
have some pie

Four Places on Planet Earth - S. Eric Scribner - Keith Eisenbrey, Matt Kocmierowsky [recorded live at the Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, May 24, 2012]

prerecorded sounds
birds frogs water running
those sorts of sounds
and Matt and I improvising from a thin script at stations
there were probably four of them
gongs may have marked the time
or their sounds
we moved from station to station
according to the thin script
there were noisemakers at each station
and possibly instructions
immersive discourse
synthetic wilderness
places determined by configuration
they're all here
but re-composed

Birds - Porn Bloopers [from Blooper Reel]

the vocals are shouted
but aren't much more than a thin film of sound on top of the cymbal sheen

Banned Telepath 83 Tintinabulary - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey [March 14, 2022]

if we don't have toddler fuss
we will need to make do with Otamatone
Karen scribbles on the xylophone
I mess around in the southeast corner
with a little amplifier
amplifying the washtub bass
works pretty well
and the Otamatone
there are many little toys on the table in the southeast corner
the Otamatone has three settings
pipsqueak duck and goose
we are doing nothing fancier
than banging on stuff to hear it make its noise

Preface

"From here they faintly heard the angry growls
of lions yanking at their chains and roaring late at night,
and bristly boars and bears raging in pens, and huge
howling shapes of wolves - human once, but
altered from their form by the cruel goddess's
magic herbs. They wore the face and fur of beasts."

Vergil - "The Aeneid" (translated by Shadi Bartsch)

Gerald McBoing Boing - Gail Kubik - Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose

a light folk-like tale
in Seussian rhyme

the music is lightweight neoclassical
appropriate for family concerts
to show off the percussion section
for the kiddos

goes rather on and on
with the percussion stuff

April 3, 2022

Times Five - Earle Brown - Harro Ruijsenaars, Earle Brown, Govert Jurriaanse, Teresia Tieu, Emile Elsen, Arthur Moore, Jarino Walta

sitting on a bench in a park
with an amusingly active critter base
including
mono-pitched flying bugs
buzzing by
or
perhaps
a series
of such benches
each
with its own population
of critter chatter
we observe it
but
its business
is all
with itself
not with us

Black Catbird - The Garifuna Collective [from Shika Shika: A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean]

those black catbirds
get a nice little beat going
bird calls
set to Latin beats

kind of a gas actually

Lightning River - Daniel Husser [from 1 Month Challenge]

baritone
has a nice knotwood tone

April 8, 2022

Chez Moi - Blossom Dearie [from My Gentleman Friend]

take turns type collaboration
vocal

Wasted - Brandi Carlile [from The Story]

in the other stanzas
not unsubtly done

You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover - Bo Diddley [colected from Neal Kosály-Meyer's Bo and the Beat]

your radio is turned up too low

Prelude in F Major - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded March 18, 2022]

It might be interesting to try this one
at a significantly increased tempo
at least for some of it
{NB: I did, see below}

Letter to Hermione - David Bowie [from Space Oddity]

going for a sophisticated pop star sound
songwritery stuff

Little Queen - Heart [from Greatest Hits]

drum licks and lyrics
join forces
tightly
momentarily
here's where the lights change for the stage show
long 70s fade

The Peacock's Tale - Orbaneja [from Orbaneja]

has prog-fusion thing going
what sublevel of status
does this hang around in?
that is
to what milieu is this music native?
drummer nerds?
tech heads?

April 3, 2022

Cleano - Woody Guthrie and Friends [from Woody's Grow Big Songs]

Woody's vocal
was recorded with an older form of audio fidelity
than the new tracks
it's almost like a CGI Woody Guthrie
playing hologram sounds

Butterfly - Mariah Carey [from Butterfly]

performative femininity
tribute
her vocal dips into an alto register
at structurally significant points

Gradus 6 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 4, 2002]

hammering the strings
as though
they
were an old metal milk can
full of voices
not
the strings themselves
but
the sound of their vibration
is the milk can
face it
those notes will fight it out
to the bitter end
after which
bitter end
we have some quiet
peace
but they still poke poke poke
experimental music
the music is the purpose of the music
not
our need to express ourselves
through music
but
music's need to express itself
to itself

April 4, 2022

Arm Twister - The Tripwires [from Makes You Look Around]

a taunt
most of the sound is low in pitch
bass
drums
lower guitar strings
the vocalist
sings in a high(ish) baritone range
but the instruments don't get in the way
someone got
some come-uppance

What's Wanting For (Karen vocal, Neal harmony) - Your Mother Should Know [May 20, 2012]

of course
Neal wasn't singing harmony
while listening to what Karen was doing
Karen's vocal came later

Track 1 - Arbor Towers [recorded live at Victory Lounge on July 15, 2017]

opens with a bit of sound check sound
and checking of tuning
and fingers
dirtroad Americana
baritone vocal sound
spirited drumming

Banned Rehearsal 1046 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Neal Kosály-Meyer [February 28, 2022]

across the telepathic timewarp
we manage
an image of intimately inter-heard ensemble
cross fertilized timbre composition

benefits of improvising
separately
include:
the preclusion of direct imitation
the impossibility of playing along with
falling into common grooves
each strand retains its internal integrity
correspondences are generated by happenstance alone
highlighting unstated commonality
retaining individuality
it is wonderful
how our sounds
ever
so
intertransform each other

All in a Garden Green, Fvb 104 - William Byrd - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

the voices are neither equal
nor fully segregated
into particular functions

Iste Est Johannes - Peter Philips - The Tudor Consort, Peter Walls [from Cantiones Sacrae Quinis Vocubus]

a homogeneous style
allows
the illusion of common purpose
common mind
subsumption of the individual
into the congregation

Sonata in A minor, Kk. 175 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

a well oiled machine
all the parts
thoughts
disparate
are machined to fit
music invented the programmable loom
the robot spider
the homogeneity
is at a deeper level
than right at the surface

Sonata in C minor, Op. 111 - Ludwig van Beethoven - Vladimir Feltsman

so many untaken paths
swept away

the theme of the second movement
never stabilizes
in pitch
nor phrase
it circles
endlessly

a great deal of energy is expended
but
upon pulling back
we find ourselves
still floating free of ground
substance
thrice transformed
and more
solidity confuted

Waltz in A-flat Major, Op. 42 - Frédéric Chopin - Alfred Cortot (1943)

it all went by in such a whirl

Original Jelly Roll Blues (take 2) - Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers [from Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers, Chicago Days]

the constant circus
of activity to entertain
no gaps

How Could You? - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day, The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

this has room to breathe
to consider words

Lover Man - Charlie Parker [from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes]

and time to spread out a long line expansive

April 5, 2022

December 1952 - Earle Brown - David Tudor

disconnected gestures
impacts enshrined
in their own craters
not entirely disconnected though
craters encroach upon each other
why disconnected
no immediately rationalizable clues
phrase rhythms adjacent
isolated
perhaps better
data points
pointillism
was the radical du jour
all squishy emotions
eschewed violently

Overture and Rock Island - Meredith Wilson [from The Music Man, Original Cast Recording]

social music
as a category
was part of my piano lessons
from early on
and that one
I was
from early on
least comfy with
the first
may have been a selection of songs
from The Music Man
which was far more recent at the time

You Made Me Love You - Aretha Franklin [from The Electrifying Aretha Franklin]

two verses
clean lines
no padding

Prelude in D minor - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded March 18, 2022]

that captures how I'm hearing it pretty well
I love the extraordinarily Picardian third that ends it
bereft of all happy associations

Ballade for viola, wind orchestra, and percussion - Frank Martin - Menuhin Festival Orchestra, Edmond deStoutz, Yehudi Menuhin

we are in an uncomfortable space
we make our way carefully
testing each position
before trusting
wary
even on this track
with our comrades
the hour even
may not protect us

What In The World - David Bowie [from Low]

ambiguous personal attribution
that is
who is speaking
any particular line
is not always clear

connect the dots
to make your own story line

Should I stay Or Should I Go - The Clash [from Combat Rock]

an age old complaint trope
you're a tease
a cliché
somewhat long in the tooth
composed of short bursts
of a few beats
each tied to the 4 4 beat

Banned Sectional 7 AKNWM - Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 21, 1987]

holding still
conflicts with occupying space
we try so hard
to do well by ourselves

a creative process
when you are young and immortal
join forces with like minds
collaborate regularly
stick it out
through everything
through aging
through family complications
through separations
through doldrums
through excitements
through it all
just stick it out
with luck
you'll be ripe
before death and dissolution
so
stick it out

each collaboration
is a microcosm of the whole
or
of a part of the whole

payoff
when you get old
the communication with the whole
is an indelible part of you

judgment
as in
is it good
no
no music is good
category problem
actually a meta-category problem

patience
if it can't be paraphrased
can an echo of it be traced
in language
or any other mode of intercourse
we all have so much music to shed

this spaces out playfully toward the end of it
pedal tone and poke tones
Aaron vocalizes

Banned Rehearsal 471 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [November 1, 1997]

retreat seven
describe the nearest similar experience
we are waiting
children are impatient
with waiting
it's cramped
and we adjust to find space
Isaac is quite a fuss
we drift
so near to speech
alone out here
flowers open
as they often do
observe
wait
the clock ticks slowly here
an outpost
aside of music proper
or im
repository of loose sound fragments
settles to the floor
what the vacuum
might suck up
Keith vocalizes
there are radiocrickets
a storm has brewn
the crickets
are not much disturbed
nor by the banjo

Hal's Fault - Dubious Duo [from Children of Siberia]

vigorous conjoined furiosity
a hedge
once in the field
pay mind to the billygoat
might ignore you
might not
rooster can be ornery too
and noisy about it

Consider the Birds 12 - Keith Eisenbrey [February 3, 2007]

groups of five adjacent sound bursts
occasionally overlapping
or seeming to
fluty sounds
and xylophone
occasionally

Strangest Things - Karin Blaine [from Modern Day Living]

one of my many musical cousins
doing her guitar plucking she-minstrel thing
direct address to her people of shared experience

Sound Check - Your Mother Should Know [recorded live at Victory Lounge, March 27, 2017]

Karen was there with just her tambourine
maybe one drum
recorded too hot
overwhelmed my device

Awakening - Amy Denio [from Chapel Sessions]

vocal percussion
bootstrap loops
but with limited iterations
sometimes none
keeping tight formations

Heaven and Earth, Fvb 105 - Francis Tregian - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

not even heaven and earth can be sung
without ample decoration

O Holder Tag, erwünschte Zeit, BWV 210 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Helmut Rilling, Sibylla Rubens

places to stand become friendly
every journey
starts from the same music
any statement
fits
within a common web of thought
there is nothing outside to intrude
a self-contained universe
our God thinking
fits together
like the music does
even our responses
are programmed
within the selfcontainment
this music
can imagine no music
outside of itself

Come Let Us Eat Together - Rev. E.D. Campbell and his Congregation [from Allen Lowe's Turn Me Loose White Man]

entering a space held open by charisma
the reverend
is the door man
the congregation
must will themselves
to go through
and stay through
in that lifted state

posits
a parallel
between
that willingness
and the humility

Stones in My Passway - Robert Johnson [from The Complete Recordings]

freely skipping beats
in the latter third of the verse
a hurry-up

Ha Ha This a Way - Lead Belly [from Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Lead Belly Legacy, Vol. 1]

a cheery song
with child abandonment
beating

Night and Day - Charlie Parker [from The Cole Porter Songbook]

brash and bright
the old 20s
updated
for the new
post-war party age

That'll Be The Day - Buddy Holly

intro prelude
guitar figure
(like Robert Johnson)
finds the groove and pitch

Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby - The Beatles [form First Live Recordings, Vol. 2]

a shake it up dance
with breaks
to organize it into verses

Everybody Loves a Winner - William Bell [a Rescued Record]

a slow blues
with arrangement complications
nice voice and vocals
vinyl noise is honest

Trippin' in Court - Cheech and Chong [from Cheech and Chong]

cultures clash
under the gavel

Tentative Decisions - Talking Heads [from Talking Heads: 77]

analyzing statements
by laying them out
on the songwriting slab
wear your scrubs
put the phrases
that make up the statement
into the boxes provided

Mansion on the Hill - Bruce Springsteen [from Nebraska]

small town
country ballad
why didn't he call the album New Jersey
oh
corn fields
wanted the distance
and the wide open

If You Were Here - Bonnie Guitar [from Dark Moon and Other Country Favorites]

a list of ifs
I'm not sure
we really want
the world
to stop turning

For Pete's Sake - Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth [from Mecca and the Soul Brother]

competitive talking points
for fancy rhymes
and dancing meter play

B.I.G. (Interlude) - The Notorious B.I.G. [from Life After Death]

a whole explanation
in under a minute
(if I could follow it)

Banned Rehearsal 633 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 8, 2002]

we take our places
we poke
to see what might wake
the piano is twitching
the small wood frog
stays in sight
the cornet
yawns and stretches
the small wood frog
found its drum friends
conversational
combo sound
drums keys cornet
it was a lovely day
today the listening day
the window is open
and birds are chirping in the trees
we find musicky places to hang
regrouping work
we succumb to atmospherics
the cornet has fallen asleep
snoring quietly in a corner
brushes with drums
spare percussion enters the fold
piano mutters
more snore
did cornet step outside
piano sends a ping
we all stopped
the piano pings low
where did cornet go
so quiet
here the ping drops
door opens
air traffic
drum solo
with creak of door hinge
all pianissimo
conversation picks up slow
as slow conversation
the banned is sedatory
and deeply so
evening bells and drums
to end it
peace abides

Holst, Hitherto - Chris DeLaurenti [from Favorite Intermissions]

bits of what is to come
form
the percussionists and timpani tuning
it has been many years now
since I experienced
a Symphony Hall Intermission
I appreciate
that Chris has provided this fine album
of unsung sounds
brass gets lippy
I understand that Deutsche Grammophone got all huffy
about his album cover
I can't imagine they were damaged
in any way
and there's the applause
and the A natural
from oboe and all assembled

Banned Rehearsal 814 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [May 11, 2012]

words appear in the back corner
otherwise
percussion putter patter
and a duck call
snare simmer
bigger drums
in the corner
with the words
other putters
elsewhere
we are a sound polisher
fill with sounds and grit
turn it on and let it tumble
till the sounds are polished Neal
must have been practicing
for reading for the second time
our sounds need extravagant polishing
and subtle grit
a scholar
in the corner
making rubbings
on the soundstones
we subside
into the sedatory moods of night
Finnegans Slumber
a lengthy twilight
on a long horizon

Gone Home - Anxious Arms [from Never Was]

solid fours vocal barely audible over the amps and drums for the moshing  more than for the song as such

Banned Telepath 83 McGrath AK - Aaron Keyt [March 14, 2022]

it is either a bunch of Iditarod dogs howling or it's Aaron imitating such

In Session at the Tintinabulary

April 5, 2022

Rounds for Aaron - Keith Eisenbrey

assembled from takes made over the last few weeks my 2021 composition, being parts 15 and 16 (simultaneously and intercomposed) of Études d'exécution imminent

Preface

"There are twin Gates of Sleep. One, they say, is made
of horn, and lets true visions pass through easily.
The other gleams with complex work in ivory,
but through it shades send lying visions to the light.
Anchises and the Sibyl brought Aeneas
to this gate and sent him through."

Vergil - "The Aeneid" (translated by Shadi Bartsch)

Texts

From Recent Arrivals

April 1, 2022

Particles of the Infinite Pt. V - Alex Anthony Faide, Alessandro Inolti [from Particles of the Infinite]

this vehicle has a loud engine
moves right along
buckle up

once outside
the perfumed fronds
brush so lightly
drugged so gently

"poppies, poppies, poppies . . ."

Remembrance - Motoko Honda

the figurations surrounding the melody
seem to imitate an orchestra
as it might be arranged for song production
(no that's not right)

it becomes the flesh of its chords
which proceed like chord changes do
as a cyclic pattern
rather than
like a contrapuntally charged tonal progression
the chords change
but don't move or transform
remain
in some sense
atomic

Jibing - Amy Denio [from Chapel Sessions]

loop based I think
an increasing inhabitation
of muttering Amys

Prayer Variations - Alison Yun-Fei Jiang - Pathos Trio [from When Dark Sounds Collide: New Music for Percussion and Piano]

here we are floating
or
we were
perhaps sinking
there may be urgency
in our fleeing
hiding
breaking through
floating once more

Recorded

March 26, 2022

Ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la, FVB 101 - William Byrd - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

ut and la are mordented
on their first appearances
up and down
in slow waves
of ut to la
et la to ut
cross ripples
from the edges of the pitch pool
reflect the upper
and lower
depths

Alma Redemptoris Mater - Peter Philips - The Tudor Consort, Peter Walls [from Cantiones Sacrae Quinis Vocubus]

it brings us along
as it moves through its moving alongness
each line
a station
moving
contemplation

Sonata in C minor, Kk. 174 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

brickwork
puzzle
mosaic
a size
is a size
until the back half
generates its own back half
stranding a front half
in the vanishing chamber

11 Bagatelles, Op. 119 - Ludwig van Beethoven - Stephen Kovacevich

re-inventing the old ways
to seek where they might go next
between Chopin type preludes
and Schumann type character pieces
and Beethoven type variations
they interlock
outside their perimeters

children's stories

Waltz in F Major, Op. 34 #3 - Frédéric Chopin - Alfred Cortot (1943)

weightless
fleet
take a bow

Original Jelly Roll Blues (take 1) - Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers [from Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers, Chicago Days]

keep your ear on the tune
don't let it sneak up behind you

Carelessly - Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

the first bars
are in a quicker harmonic tempo
than that
in which
the song proper
lives

Max Making Wax - Charlie Parker [from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes]

moving too fast to stop now
spit it out

Teenage Letter - Jerry Lee Lewis [from Rare and Rockin']

Jerry and Jelly
share nominative syllable count
backseat makeout
pressure tactics

Hello Little Girl - The Beatles [from The Beatles Anthology Volume 1]

these older guys
sure do spend a lot of time
on little girls

Prelude in G minor - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded March 18, 2022]

pretty good (my playing)
it could use a more varied touch in places
especially the beginning

The World is a Ghetto - War [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

composed throughout
moves are earned
prepared
followed up

Holidays in the Sun - The Sex Pistols [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

drum strikes
crunch
like marching boots
attitude
as marketable commodity
typecasting

Someone Like You / Walkin' Cane - The Knitters [from Poor Little Critter on the Road]

it's difficult to lampoon country music
it has such a deficit of irony in general
that the lampooning
is swallowed up
without so much as a twinge
absorbed

fireside hootenanny singalongs

to the cemetery
walkin'
from the boneyard
dancing

March 27, 2022

Banned Rehearsal 114 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Julie F, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 21, 1987]

in the mix
it is as though
we were all in the room
together
though
we were actually separated
along the coast
and by time
Karen and I
made our tape
quite late in the evening

do you like my party hat?

{from my journal entry of June 3, 1988:

much better balanced than 113
some talk about smoking
percussive guitar and catalog work
nice vocal solo with mbiru Keith!
actually one of the most enjoyable telepath tapes
as a mix
in a while
sleepy again
going to town
on fishwhistle
rhythm of speech
underneath
Morris the Cat
enough cross-talking
to make it really quite beautiful
layered}

Soul Driver - Bruce Springsteen [from Human Touch]

interesting mix for Bruce
each instrument track remains clearly itself
they don't meld into a mush
like they often do
similar vocal delivery to Star Anna

Weary American Country Blues

Banned Rehearsal 470 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [October 25, 1997]

some kitcheny rattle rhythms
Uncle W snoring melodiously
in the easy chair
bells need shaking
chatter among the guitars
Uncle W has stopped snoring
picked it up again
elaborate preparations
and fine chatter
a new phase
celebrated by truly tinkly bells
ah yes
Uncle W has awakened at last
conversation picks up
still gotta shake things though
that task never really ends
this
may yet be cooking
going on
chemical processes
application of heat
agitating
stirring
kneading
ingredient economy
open plan improvising

a rules girl
some Vegas crooner
from radio land
I don't think we're in the kitchen anymore
though still the shaker shakes
Aaron finds wolves in his synthesizer
we have entered Uncle W's snore
we search out its cavernous sinuses
for the Chamber of Resonance
we'll have to go by plane
ride the wind
will wake up
when supper is ready
messages from
journey
to the center
of the slumber
explorers of the past
the past passed
dragon rumors persist
tap the metal walls
our lights search the shape of our containers
quiet drum beat
friendly
in one space
made of inter-rotating
distinct
spaces
distinct
in that
they have
distinct methods
of distinguishing
their shape
to themselves
we may have found
snore central
the much renowned
Chamber of Resonance
in the center
of Uncle W's
capacious
schnozz

still get radio in here
who knew?

{from my journal entry of September 16, 2005:

sound (tech) is pretty good in this one
I wonder if we had moved the microphones by this [time]?
focused murmurs
we speak as though into cans}

March 28, 2022

Grandmother Cedar Tree - Johnny Moses [from When Humans Thought They Were People]

inter-generational care
socialization

Consider the Birds, Mix 2 - Keith Eisenbrey [February 3, 2007]

from multiple locations
within an interior
critters
tap and hoot
a texture
that undulates
in numerous
familial
interactions
there is no single path of attention
it desires
a field of communications
in action
sparks
move along the paths
they make themselves
node to node

Overture - Tyrannosaurus Grace [from Much More Than A Story]

going prog
light show ready

March 29, 2022

Maple Leaf 170326 - Keith Eisenbrey [March 26, 2017]

five years and three days ago
in our yard
we had loaned it
to an urban farm co-op
the year before
so I placed the device
next to the remains of some kale
if one knows what to listen for
I can be heard in the kitchen
making coffee
we are a block or so from a 4-lane highway
so there is plenty of traffic sound
crows song birds air traffic a seagull
crows caw in groups of evenly separated calls
the count varies
but amounts to a kind of spaced out mathematics
are there local dialects of crow caw lingo?
some human person sings something
while they walk by
full voice
I think some bird or other
must  be on the ground
very near the device
though it might be a squirrel
short sharp chirps
interesting chatter among yard kind
very quick
hummingbird?
a mob of something chirpy
erupts in the distance
crows can be quite stern
there's me tromping out to put a stop to it

Infrathin Condition 8 - Doug Haire [from Infrathin Conditions]

the unimaginable magnitude of perception

Ut, me, re, Fvb 102 - William Byrd - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

and chains thereof
ascending
with mordents
given how few
these days
speak tonal
as it were
do any
still
really
speak tetrachordal?

multiple
ever shifting frames
of functionality
implying
who knows what
economies of thought

Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht, BWV 211 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Karl Foster, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Lisa Otto, Josef Traxel

Fischer-Dieskau at his most egregious
over acting
and over-engineered
they sat the flautist right next to me
did Bach's orchestras use transverse flutes?

a woman's desires
(as opposed to
her father
and her marriage prospects)
treated
as humor fodder
all the Dad hears
is tootling

default legato strings

Take Me to the Water - Rev. E. D. Campbell [from Goodbye, Babylon]

recording of a performed baptism
sounds like a holler
but it's a chant
shaman-adjacent
an honest attempt
to understand
and echo
what was presumed
to have been meant
by John the Baptist

If I Had Possession over Judgment Day - Robert Johnson [from The Complete Recordings]

his intro riffs
are more like checking his tuning
than anything more compositional
he matches his vocal delivery
to different positions
on the figures
on the guitar

Sally Walker - Lead Belly [from Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Lead Belly Legacy Volume 1]

includes instructions
for the party game
doesn't matter
who's in the chair
it's got to be a Walker

Sweet and Easy to Love - Roy Orbison [from Sun Records Definitive Hits]

bop de wadda wadda wah
sweeter than easy
does Roy know what they're saying behind him?

Where Have You Been All My Life - The Beatles [from First Live Recordings, Volume 1]

recorded with what?
even then
vocal amplification couldn't keep up

Tramp - Otis Redding and Carla Thomas [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

any big show
needed a comedy number
smack down
rhythm play
also
allows the man to brag in public

Could It Be I'm Falling In Love - The Spinners [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

the opening figures
in the bells
and then
the strings
each
rise
in an imitation
of the inflection
of inquiry

the whole thing sits up high there

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

covered by a sheen
from head to toe

Riding With Mary - X [from Under the Big Black Sun]

the difference between the verse and the chorus
registers
as a small change
in the ongoing texture
constant in all possible other ways

March 30, 2022

Banned Sectional 6 AK NWM - Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 21, 1987]

pipe organ and piano
in a big space
so tempting
a large scale painting in oils
and a small ink drawing
chat
color
and figuration
on each other's duds
there's the big Bundler
after which
we calm down for a bit

a challenge
in pairing piano and organ
the piano's sound
all emanates
from a specific place
from an object
in a room
its size
as a sound
within the space
is limited
and fixed
the organ's sounds
come into our space
and inhabit that space with us
this aspect of organ sound
is almost impossible to capture in a recording
with the result
that
the perceived sound
shrinks abysmally
as though
we were hearing it
the wrong way
down a telescope
the piano sound
keeps more of its presence on recordings
generally
but little of its resonance can be heard
through even the organ's shrunken sound
neither comes off particularly well

they do manage to find some nice conjoined places
especially toward the end
despite the systemic challenges

Nuthin' But a "G" Thang - Dr. Dre (feat. Snoop Doggy Dog)

rhyme games
word play
like
what bebop was
to the tin pan alley
word play
as to
tin pan alley
tunes

Velvet Rope - Janet Jackson [from The Velvet Rope]

at home
within a complex social/rhythmic environment
it works
if you can create multiples as needed

PC KEE 020303 - Pete Comley, Keith Eisenbrey [March 3, 2002]

Pete had asked me to bring my Silvertone hollow body and Sunn Stinger over to play
while he spun vinyl
through boxes and devices
unnamable
everything
was recorded
and mixed
on-line
without microphones
another channel in his mix
it was an unusual experience for me
having no idea
whether what I was doing
would make a sound
out there
it's hard to believe
it was 20 years ago

Pete has a unique collection of vinyl
sounds of history
sound effects
birds
and music of various varieties
a sound poem
of the randomishly curated past
somehow my electric guitar stylings
fit right in
with this
psychedelic junkheap
of sound
should I be unsurprised?
switch toggling rhythm
effects play
pile off the road
on the high side
a weapon of destruction
a silent movie
without the movie
it will be on your conscience
it happens all too often
in Volkswagon engines
unmerchantable wood
everything must go

March 31, 2022

Postcard - Curtains For You [from Heaven's Waiting]

it ends in the air
though without an anticipated cadence
more like
an anticipated fade-out

What's Wanting For (Karen and Neal duet) (final) - Your Mother Should Know [March 20, 2012]

this version is a bit of a mess
the two vocal conceptions don't gel

Earplug Girl - Alone in Dead Bars [recorded live at Victory Lounge, Seattle, on July 15, 2017]

a loud song
about a loud band
and a girl

Banned Telepath 82 Tintinabulary - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [February 28, 2022]

the wettest last day ever
and so viola
low tech
and hi tech
admonishments
string tones
pots and pans tones
electronically processed tones
each quite distinct
though our activities
are each scribbly
in nature
or perhaps
doodly
is more accurate
there is intent
pots and pans
give way
to kora
which sounds a bit like a viola
but held
more inside itself

beware the mermaids should they sing

the various tones or timbres in play
find modes of connecting amongst themselves

Fantasia, Fvb. 103 - William Byrd - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

by then it was clear
that the rhythmic outlines of one's subjects were composable
so as
to have effect
upon
or within
the textural design of the whole

similarly as to their pitch structures

My Daddy's Got a Brand New Way to Love - Alberta Hunter, Price Goodson, Da Costa Woltz's Southern Broadcasters [from Allen Lowe's Turn Me Loose White Man]

"My Boy"
in the older
night time
America

kept the London Bridge
from falling down

Little Red Caboose - The Pickar Family [from Evans 78s]

song as a carrier wave
for light verse
newspapers had recipes
and these also

Placetas - Chano Pozo and Orchestra [from Allen Lowe's Turn Me Loose White Man]

did aspects of African drumming
transfer more intactly
to the Caribbean
than to the Southern USofA
or did they just survive longer?

I may have a tin ear for this
but there is a distinct similarity here
to what I have heard
of the music of Burundi
(which is not a great deal)

Rock-A-Billy - Guy Mitchell [a Rescued Record]

a history of sorts
Billy as in hillbilly
I don't think guy is one

In Session at the Tintinabulary
