Stu and Renko send bells to Newcastle
Preface

"'Vere are they?' said Sam, reciprocating all the old gentleman's grins.
'In the snuggery,' rejoined Mr.Weller. 'Catch the red-nosed man a goin' anyvere but vere the liquors is; not he, Samivel, not he. Ve'd a wery pleasant ride along the road from the Markis this mornin', Sammy,' said Mr. Weller, when he felt himself equal to the task of speaking in an articulate manner. 'I drove the old piebald in that 'ere little shay-cart as belonged to your mother-in-law's first wenter, into vich a harm-cheer wos lifted for the shepherd; and I'm blest' said Mr. Weller, with a look of deep scorn - 'I'm blest if they didn't bring a portable flight o' steps out into the road a front o' our door, for him to get up by.'
'You don't mean that?' said Sam.
'I do mean that, Sammy,' replied his father, 'and I vish you could ha' seen how tight he held on by the sides wen he did get up, as if he was afeerd o' being precipitayted down full six foot, and dashed into a million o' hatoms. He tumbled in at last, however, and avay ve vent; and I rayther think - I say I rather think, Samivel - that he found his-self a little jolted when we turned the corners.'
'Wot, I s'pose you happened to drive up agin a post or two?' said Sam.
'I'm afeerd,' replied Mr. Weller, in a rapture of winks, 'I'm afeerd I took vun or two on 'em, Sammy; he wos a flyin' out o' the harm-cheer all the way.'

the lines of others
that clearly fit

close
indoors thinking

Recorded

January 13, 2024

Waltz in A-flat Major, Op. 64 #3 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

slides right past establishing cadences
missing exits blithely
but then
the key it is in
is
whatever these notes are doing together
being
where they are being

The Collection - Charles Ives - Dora Ohrenstein, Phillip Bush

strong and brave and manly
and sentimentally resolved

'Round Midnight - Thelonious Monk [from The Complete Blue Note Recordings]

front halves and back halves
just one of several segmentations possible
of groups of two and four

Belchezaar - Bob Dylan [from A Tree With Roots]

a folk tale
from the years of exile
nothing else
there was no man
(just the hand)

Abraham, Martin, and John - Ray Charles [from A Message from The People]

there's another interesting keyboard sound
some sort of electric piano?
or a stop on an organ

I suppose
on an electric organ
the sense in which it's a stop
is entirely metaphoric

Willya Wontcha - Bonnie Raitt [from Green Light]

honkytonk dance
packed with twang

The Wind Blow East - Mike, Peggy, and Penny Seeger [from American Folk Songs for Children]

an unlikely weather forecast
from all directions

Devil's Arcade - Bruce Springsteen [from Magic]

every song has a power move
you could set your watch to it

January 14, 2024

Breaking Free for a Moment - Steve Layton & Improv Friday [from Shared Circle]

some textures resolve into pulse
others
into several
others
are genuinely wild
a music can explore textural landscapes

Silver (Demo) - Waxahatchee [from Out In The Storm]

differentiated melodic ranges
and trajectories
between the verse stanza
and the louder wider choppier chorus stanza

Bejeweled - Taylor Swift [from Midnights]

separates the last word of a line into a new space
("...| |nice")
also
by repetition of each part
and at different increments

Easy Evil - Sarah Vaughan [from Feelin' Good]

soft low brass and reeds
in a slow groove
love that low scooped "agaaaaain"

Nameless One, No. 3 - Sun Ra [from Celestial Love]

they're cooking on this one
from the point of view
of the musicians
in their musical interactions
the audience
must be with them
among them
(participation)

The Dress Rehearsal Blues - Tielman Susato Krummhorn Gesellschaft [from The Glory of The Krummhorn]

then I started thinking about it
snippets of conversation

this is actually quite sweet and funny
there they are
playing around with my crazy recorder tunes
on krummhorns
folks just joking around
with notes I wrote!
Wow!
I never knew I'd had such an influence!

***Flawless (feat. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie) - Beyoncé [from Beyoncé]

dominance
fence
an essay

New Found Land - John Moen [from Roll Columbia]

dance floor
circling lights

How I Got Over - Aretha Franklin [from Amazing Grace]

participation is a relationship
in which all are engaged equally

Advance (12" Single Version) - Boogie Down Productions [from Criminal Minded]

syncopatic groove poetics
shouting ones name
into the groovoid
false endings

closely composed melody
fully operatic

Stumble - REM [from Dead Letter Office]

traversing the given
the fenced yard
the language
chord change
schematic diagrams

a diagrammed lyric
(by production/chord change cycles)
each part in a box

writer::inker
writer::producer

not even event can shake it

somebody is banging metallics in the hallway

Totem 55 - Sascia Pellegrini [from Totem V]

these sounds pass
as the four winds pass
in gusts and gales

Shut Up, Tim - Swingset Showdown [from Short Bus Ruckus]

tantrum

Track 16 - Star Anna [streamed from Fiddler's Inn, Seattle, March 7, 2022]

(tuning for the last song)
the flow of song
is of such a nature
that
only total
personal
engagement
will allow it
unimpeded
it
will
necessarily
then
be formed
in the image
of the singer
its totally engaged agent
it
can only properly exist
as
one's total engagement
with it

Old Soul - Northern Departure [from Live from Sound Off 2012]

this one's for the guitar nerds
in front of stage
lyrics

and quite credibly too

Take Me Home, Country Roads - Ray Charles [from A Message From the People]

chemistry between Ray and his choir
calls them
like a fiddler dance caller

Let's Keep It Between Us - Bonnie Raitt [from Green Light]

a song can be a theatrical presentation
of a private-type conversation
so we know how to say
what we fantasize ourselves needing to say

Nothing Will Be As It Was - Sarah Vaughan [from Brazilian Romance]

the meter is spacious
and activated with multiple internal rhythm vectors

Jack, Can I Ride - Mike, Peggy, and Penny Seeger [from Animal Folk Songs for Children]

clapping game
sing-song song

Terry's Song - Bruce Springsteen [from Magic]

all the greatest greatests
roped into a mixed hyperbole

Holy Ground - Taylor Swift [from Red]

the end of each line
finally moves to a different note
the sequence of those different notes
is a composed line
simple but effective

into the magic
part of ritual
the part
that re-envisions time's passing

Pure/Honey - Beyoncé [from Renaissance]

an advertisement for a lifestyle

Precious Lord, Take My Hand/You've Got a Friend - Aretha Franklin [from Amazing Grace]

these gospel arrangements

fabulous without question
but
the hymn remains itself
always ready
for a new ear to re-invent it

Say No Brother (Crack Attack Don't Do It) [12" Inst. Reality Mix] - Boogie Down Productions [from Criminal Minded]

off topic?
nothing to do with dams or electricity

westward now to Death Valley

Toy (Your Turn To Drive) - David Bowie [from Toy]

gauging how much it takes
to hold interest
in spinning cycles

a hypnotism trick
accumulation without transformation

Nocturnal Me (Echo and The Bunnymen) - Prom Queen [from Covers]

surrounded with cushions
and heavy hangings
incense and voluptuaries

Recite Remorse (Demo) - Waxahatchee [from Out In The Storm]

a song
to be sold
must be
in the approved range of styles
industry demands it
more effective than censorship

Missing Words VI: VII. Rolleirückblende (Rollei-Flashback) - Eric Nathan [from Missing Words]

gravity inexorable
questions allowed
answers not so much

Line Pumpercar - Bruce Hamilton & Friends [from Mash Hits Vol. 1]

does it follow
that
if music is made of sound
and that
if sound is a translation of a signal
that
then
music
is made of signal(s)?
or
is music a mode
that only exists
in the translation of the signal
which translation
is our invention

buy my records

instructions
among the famous 50 ways
to do it

Waltz in D-sharp minor, Op. 64 #2 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

sonorous pianissimo

All the Things You Are - Thelonious Monk [from The Complete Blue Note Recordings]

piano sneaks in behind the vibraphone

for the laziest summers

January 17, 2024

playing with cars

Rain, Come Wet Me - Mike, Peggy, and Penny Seeger [from American Folk Songs for Children]

fragment of a prayer

Jack of All Trades - Bruce Springsteen [from Wrecking Ball]

doing all those manly things
to get by
shoot 'em on sight

Piano Dream - Steve Layton & Sound-In [from Further Journey]

disparate transmissions
waiting for the lights to change
which may be delayed
combined sound environment
arising by chance
for encryption

a community may develop in the meantime

Cuando Me Dé la Gana - Christina Aguilera [from Aguilera]

drinking songs
are drinking songs
the world over

Every Saturday Night - Ray Charles [from A Message from the People]

catfish butterbeans and chitlin

Stop the Violence (Massive 12" Inst. Version) - Boogie Down Productions [from Criminal Minded]

regularity is deceptive
in that
any thread of it
may not persist
new threads disrupt
some times
appear
like islands

Superpower (feat. Frank Ocean) - Beyoncé [from Beyoncé]

there's that O Holy Night arpeggiated accompaniment figure
this song is a staged dance on film

Getaway Car - Taylor Swift [from Reputation]

twisting a song around an excuse

the vocal infiltrates
from within the guitar fire

Climbing Higher Mountains - Aretha Franklin [from Amazing Grace]

a question arises
concerning the sacredness of bodily expression

living in vintage sound
songs can tell a story
or
be about one
recitative
da capo aria
da capo
ad lib

The Song of the Grand Coulee Dam - George Rezendes, David Grisman [from Roll Columbia]

or
can be an excuse
for banjo pickin'

built
by the hand
of the man

Glassloops - Bruce Hamilton & Friends [from Mash Hits Vol. 1]

enter as a polyphonic voice
everybody here
seems to be dressed in the same chord
the power of fashion

Sparks Fly (Demo) - Waxahatchee [from Out In The Storm]

leapwise melody
to rejigger the accentuation of syllables

I Just Smoked the Best Crack of My Life - Swingset Showdown [from Short Bus Ruckus]

that's nice

Infinity - Kung Foo Grip [from Live from Sound Off 2012]

a physical workout
to shout this
so quickly breathless

Keep On - Star Anna & Mike McCready

hang in there folks

Syntopia 2 - Sascia Pellegrini

a caldron
closely watched
patiently attended

||{a break for an important stretch}||

back to the patient caldron
in progress

the caldron
is not just what is in it
but also
who put what is in it
into it

mumble crumble
roil and rumble

third part
much later
many centuries in fact
a very long process of attendance

heart throbbing

fine

Mazurka in B Major, Op. 63 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

metrical pulse
is much malleable
his stuttering ornaments
and witty all dones

Feldeneinsamkeit - Charles Ives - Mary Ann Hart, Dennis Helmrich

to show that he'd been to school
and knew how it was done
on the continent
so pretty

I Should Care (Alternative Take) - Thelonious Monk [from The Complete Blue Note Recordings]

its that piano vibraphone singer act again
a comic clumsiness
in the grace with which they support the singer

purpose of the piano solo
to fuddle the time of return

You Win Again - Bob Dylan [from A Tree With Roots]

not a bad demo
the mix is OK but crude

America the Beautiful - Ray Charles [from A Message from the People]

fanfare in marching rhythm
in the further verses
and the big timpani bam bam bam bam
ala Zarathustra

I Can't Help Myself - Bonnie Raitt [from Green Light]

party time for golden youth
looks back
to its more innocent remembrances

It's Simple - Sarah Vaughan [from Brazilian Romance]

a song is made of pitch energies
pulling at each other in an enclosed space

Daddy Shot a Bear - Mike, Peggy, and Penny Seeger [from Animal Folk Songs for Children]

through the keyhole and never touched a hair

Le Miroir Amère - Steve Layton & Improv Friday [from PPP]

given half a chance
we will find voices that lead

A-Ramblin' Round - John Moen [from Roll Columbia]

judging a song
one can't rely on
either
the independent strength of the words
nor
the independent strength of the music
there is
another music
to how they synthesize
into something
more than joined

Labyrinth - Taylor Swift [from Midnights]

was that a french horn blurp?
sure sounds like it

what would these people sing about
if their love lives weren't complicated at
least as presented

Amazing Grace - Aretha Franklin [from Amazing Grace]

carried along
we carry along carrying along
every word
in every statement
no slack
we are securely carried along

Stop the Violence (Massive 12" A Capella Version) - Boogie Down Productions [from Criminal Minded]

just the vocal track
digital silence
between segments

Circles - Christina Aguilera [from Lotus]

this song is a rude gesture

Roll, Columiba, Roll - Fine Company [from Roll Columbia]

wild and reckless
to be conquered

Summer Renaissance - Beyoncé [from Renaissance]

long stanzas
are distinguished by their trajectories
or
there is a set of cycling trajectories
that are sequenced into a song

When You Need Me - Bruce Springsteen [from Tracks]

band comes in at the 2nd verse
full cliche
by the book song production

January 18, 2024

Dronedrift - Bruce Hamilton & Friends [from Mash Hits Vol. 1]

two harmonies alternate
tick tock
split return
we do love to throb
the layers are removed piecemeal
that's the show

Brass Bean (Demo) - Waxahatchee [from Out In The Storm]

demo
just the song
with its skeletal arrangement
pre-production
no fancy hem to finish it

You've Got a Habit of Leaving - David Bowie [from Toy]

production is Bowie's native compositional paradigm
composing a sound file in the shape of an industry song

Free From You - Swingset Showdown [from Short Bus Ruckus]

celebrating self-centered slackerhood

Closure - The Oh Wells [from Live from Sound Off 2012]

the keyboard sounds like a toy
not bad in itself
but why play dull patterns
with a dull sound?
more a skit than a song

In Session at The Tintinabulary

Luton - Keith Eisenbrey

I'll be at these for a while I think.

January 15, 2024

January 17, 2024

Dies ist der Tag, den Gott gemacht - Aaron Keyt

January 19, 2024

Nun wolle Gott, dass unser Sang - Aaron Keyt

these are fun to play on clavichord which forwards their particularly Keytian graceful clumsiness

Keith Eisenbrey 11: 2007 - Music as Film (part 1)

My "Music as Film" project involved building complex sound textures from tiny fragments of sound outward, and was inspired by aspects of some of Stan Brakhage's film making techniques - especially the kind of individual care taken with each frame of such films as "Mothlight". The source sounds for Consider the Birds and Sputnik Love were portions of recent Banned Rehearsal sessions that happened to be on my computer. For Lids Film I recorded myself playing bells and potlids, and used that.

Volumes 1 through 10 are available at keitheisenbrey.bandcamp.com

Motet: Laetatus sum - Marc-Antoine Charpentier - Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet [from Vespres à la Vierge]

tripping right along

very few

many sectioned
by tempo and meter
Schütz
might have called this
among his Symphoniae sacrae

Get Mine, Get Yours - Christina Aguilera [from Stripped]

about?
about production composition
how its overlays mix the verbal message

she says she won't bite

Baby Sister - Dolly Parton [from Just Because I'm a Woman]

Praeludium, Fvb 106 - John Bull - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

step by step accumulation
of decorative abundance
held in place
by long tones

O Nomen Jesu - Peter Philips - The Tudor Consort, Peter Walls [from Cantiones Sacrae Quinis Vocubus]

the text is held tenderly
turned slowly
next line
new game
each next line
new game
the phrases
must be regarded
closely
each alone

Sonata in D minor, Kk. 176 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

differing figures
joined by their metrical placement
these figures all begin on the upbeat
or
joined by their subsequence
to a common supersequent figure
points in the past
do not recede
at any kind of even rate
our analysis of time's continuous passage
is at variance
with our experience
of music's past moments

Sonata in C minor, Op. 111 - Ludwig van Beethoven - Stephen Kovacevich

he really grunts and growls along with it
yuck
underneath the Sturm und Drang
it keeps coming back
to a quiet shelter
then hurls itself back in

the more often a pitch returns
the less tenable it seems to be

Waltz in D-flat Major, Op. 64 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Alfred Cortot (1943)

the rash tempo leaves the ceiling
to turn graceful bends of heads
upon Balzacianly slender necks
floating in their moments

Trascrizione di concerto sopra motivi dell'opera Merlin - Feruccio Busoni - Wolf Harden

endlessly entertaining us
with feats of musical legerdemain
a theatrical pianism
entertaining
if what music does

is entertaining to you

it is to me

Doctor Jazz - Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers [from Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers, Chicago Days]

early big band
clown car orchestra
beneath the slapstick
the embryo
of Sun Ra's Arkestra
in costume

Nobody's Darling - Cumberland Ridge Runners [from Evans 78s]

I wonder
in the isolated rural West
as in other isolated areas of the Americas
the people were forced to entertain themselves
to a greater extent
and into more recent times
than in the larger towns and cities
was it here
that Country Music arose
as the recorded residue of that tradition
as it came to an end
in the train wreck of modern culture

Me, Myself and I (take 1) - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day, The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

clever grammatical word play was in fashion
from Broadway days
we blame Cole Ira and Irving

The G_____ - Charlie Parker [from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes]

when the changes come back around to the top
it might be analogous to a tonal cadence
and it does enter into
how the structure of the song is perceived
a kind of reset button
what is different
is the sense of journeying to get there
that is
specifically dramatic potentiation

Isn't This a Lovely Day - Billie Eckstein, Sarah Vaughan [from The Irving Berlin Songbook]

a romantic
caught in the rain song

Driving Guitars (Ventures Twist) - The Ventures [from Walk Don't Run]

dance music
going down
the dance craze road

The Look of Love - Nina Simone [from Silk & Soul]

such a soft touch on the glottals
she pays close attention to the words she's saying
and making a personally coherent statement
long long o
on go
and so
a new game for the coda

I Wanna Be Where You Are - Michael Jackson [from Got To Be There]

in our desire to project ourselves onto our children
we turn them adult without consent

flipside of eternal youth culture

Smash It Up - The Damned [collected from Nancy's Mix]

poetic guitar solo
part 1
then the drums are applied
tempo change
the song proper
part 2
psychedelic fade on an acapi
{NB that's what's in the journal folks clear as day. I have no idea what I might have meant}

Cooks County - The Who [from It's Hard]

it'sa mighta gonna break apart at any moment
or get in a fist fight

April 11, 2022

Banned Rehearsal 115 - Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 22, 1987]

tongue drum starts it
then a flute of some kind
then a guitar string being rubbed
distant gales
far outside
behind walls and shutters
vocals on a liquid
vowels droning and swooping
settling into a steadiness
the word window is used
then picked up in imitation
the drone expands and rhythmifies
take the elevator not the stairs
becomes a song
and difficult to step off
spins off
stops
all stop
the sunlight in the middle of the night
a basketball
not the court
or
a device was activated
flute
and doing some
my serious business with pots and pans
some thing may be sizzling on the stove
back to our muddles and daddies
a device is activated
where the light goes out
tongue drum and click stick percolate and tap
subdued throughout
echoed on devices
windows in muddles

{from my journal entry of June 25, 1988:
slow a song gathers
take the elevator by Neal
then echoes
window by Aaron
on a chant-tone
some cookin' by Anna
why do things get in a muddle, Daddy?}

Buggin' Out - A Tribe Called Quest [from Low End Theory]

metabrag
a brag about the qualities of their bragging

Banned Rehearsal 472 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [November 8, 1997]

we jump right in
torpedoes be damned
forte eruptions from the piano
fill the keyboard with pounding
ever stalwart Uncle W
ever steady on the tiller
electric guitar taking potshots from all sides
bring out the big drums
ring the bell
ring the bell
hostile waters
partially subdued
we bang on stuff

Aaron growls and barks German words
we come to a safer harbor
we sing at the moon in canine polyphony
a calmer Aaron emerges amid the jingly bells
oh dear Isaac's a fuss
we do trend noisy
fingery tuniness wanders through the din
overtalking
outshouting
Keith sermonizes against wine
party drums pounding now
inciting a temperance riot
with harsh whistles unpent
synthesizer or guitar hard to say
might just be Neal singing
solo voluntary
is it time for a rousing hymn?
not yet a tape
a march
by land it is then
ring the bell incessantly
now for the hymn to rouse
A Thousand Years of Prohibition
everybody's favorite drinking song
lift up your eyes
behold the Dawn
the kazoos are a nicely unhinged touch
and the yelping dog honks
dreams of yesterday
and Schubert
somewhat the worse for wear

{from my journal entry of September 27, 2005:
a slowish spine of a chorale
bristling with drumming on drums and piano
and else
a list of shouted German words

I seem to be doing things on the guitar

and at the distinctions between that and this
signal is ultimate homogeneity
guitar has been sucked into radioland
the space of outer chatter

we will need to make do with Otamatone
Karen scribbles on the xylophone

there are many little toys on the table in the southeast corner
the Otamatone has three settings
pipsqueak duck and goose
we are doing nothing fancier
than banging on stuff to hear it make its noise

 Preface

"One should recognize that all "schools of thought" are relative to interests, and not born out of theoretical objectivity - in fact, theoretical objectivity is rather to be skeptically viewed as perhaps irrelevant to the reason for which one thinks - namely, to deal with problems of unclarity or insecurity in one's identity or one's intuition or one's perception or one's motivation or one's "program" for activity or behavior or interbehavior. "Objectivity" is therefore without a subject or a purpose and of all modes of thought most prone to self-referential irrelevance. (You could argue that a "field" consisting of "objective" thinking develops its own internal energies; but that is precisely what unmasks such a "field" as being relevant only to its own internal economy - an analysis which I believe would not really be congenial to the practitioners of most such fields.)"

- Benjamin Boretz "thoughts in an email, 10/93 (to Marianne Kielian-Gilbert)" from "Being About Music Textworks 1960-2003 J. K. Randall Benjamin Boretz Volume 2: 1978-2003"

Wayward in Limbo

With the Chapel closed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wayward Music Series now moves from the concert hall to the living room. In place of our usual ten monthly concerts, Nonsequitur is curating and commissioning ten

Seattle artists each month to create a series of streaming audio sessions of exclusive material. Many of these will be essentially “live” performances recorded at home for this occasion. Others may create a mix of pre-recorded material that has not been previously released elsewhere.

Melia Watras & Michael Jinsoo Lim

the almond tree duos - Melia Watras

gently archaic
in the manner that J.K. Randall's Troubador songs are
but not reaching quite so many centuries back
perhaps Praetorius at times
or Debussy at others

occasional modestly extended techniques in playful play
archaic but with modern commentary

it reminds me how much I love solo strings
a string player is so closely entwined
their body and the instrument's body
intervulnerable

in some modern jazz pieces
post bebop
the ritornella can be
a sequence of  unison or heterophonic rhythms
angular in pitch contour and metrical thrust
very like old courtly dance
some of this is
very like that

dressed up for formal presentation
sit down concert style music relies on and benefits from close inspection
in turn
allowing a liberty to indulge in fine distinctions

it is also
for better or worse
the formality with which I am personally familiar
and in which I have been schooled
and in which I find myself
all too easily indulging
and in which
consequently I am these days
more and more leery
distrustful

the formality of it is rooted
in academic
new-music-program
presentation ready
c.v. enhancing
institutionalism
perhaps inescapably
without regard to the qualities of the music as itself

but this particular streaming presentation isn't being had within that milieu

so how might a musical thought
requiring for its optimal reception
the kind of close attention
that is
on the best occasions
at least available
in that cloistered academic environment
operate now
in this new world?

Selections from Die Meistersinger: Prelude to Act III, Dance of the Apprentices, Entrance of the Meistersingers - Richard Wagner - Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy

trope of the Liszt Wagner camp:
start dark slow and mysterious
echo back
the hush
the dark

the stillness insisted upon
to hear this
in the space it is composed for

rather dark for a comedy though
those are some well-behaved apprentices
so happy to be German Villagers
and here comes the glorious vanity of man
on parade
pomping and strutting

Boris Godunov, Act I, Scene II - (1872 version) - Modeste Mussorgsky - Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra, Jerzy Semkow, Martti Talvela, Leonard Mroz, Nicolai Gedda, Bozena Kinasz, Andrzej Hiolski, Aage Haugland, Halina Lukomska, Polish Radio Chorus of Krakow, Boys Chorus from the Krakow Philharmonic Chorus

it is dark outside
but bright and cheery in here
uh oh
men's voices laughing
always:
trouble will follow

and a dance not so far out from parts of Petrushka

it is hard to be happy in Moskva

outside of this story
of this stage
in the outside
of the image of this music
abides an oppressive expanse of dark silence
a wilderness of nothing for days and days around

many words are spilt in peril

Les Eolides - César Franck - Orchestre Philharmonique De Liege, Paul Strauss

this main melody (the first one)
seems to have a prior existence
of which this is only a series of clever allusions

My Home - Antonín Dvořák - Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Vaclav Neumann

Sextet in D minor, Op. 70 "Souvenir de Florence" - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Copenhagen String Quartet, F. Christensen, I. Geisler

Figuration in classical form arose as a means of articulating fine distinctions of harmony within segments of frames.

In Romantic neo-classical usage this aspect of figuration is partly subsumed to its use as prolongation of melody,
and thus the theme was born
and melody found it had arisen
within a kind of prison
its roles laid out in books.

1st theme should be X
2nd theme should be Y
etc.

The face of the music is turned toward the audience rather than toward within the circle of players. They are doing this for us,
then for them.

The later movements
especially when they thin out
are playful -
a welcome relief

leave room for national character
it's all the rage
big tune payoff shot

Klavierstücke, Op. 119 - Johannes Brahms - Julius Katchen

The struggle anent the barline is waged on all fronts available.

Davidsbundler in the Modern World
fighting the old fight

Concerto in F-sharp minor - Alexander Scriabin - London Philharmonic Orchestra, Lorin Maazel, Vladimir Ashkenazy

begins in mid-swoon Hollywood scene of mad passion
wanders into innocent childhood dreamy land
sugar plums and all
got the Tchaikovsky model on his noggin

his piano writing here is far more engaging than in any concerto of Tchaikovsky's or Rachmaninov's, but engaging is subtle and won't get you far in Romantic Piano Concerto Land.

he is of that Land though a natural citizen
and not a slouch of one either

You Been a Good Old Wagon - Len Spencer [from Allen Lowe's Turn Me Loose White Man]

an edifying reminder of just how blatant the racist caricatures really were

Valsette - Zoltán Kodály - Jenö Jandó

the sense of a waltzy 3 emerges gently
2 vanishes
but when?

Le Roi de etoiles - Igor Stravinsky - Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Riccardo Chailly

yes

this is an alien mind
sit down

Reflection Rag - Scott Joplin - William Albright

Life here is charming and controlled.
All the phrases are 4 barred, because America
isn't fancy that way
we like triadic harmonies
deal wid it

Three Fantastic Dances - Dmitri Shostakovich - Dmitri Shostakovich

three little ironical knots

James Alley Blues - Richard Rabbit Brown [from Allen Lowe's Really The Blues]

such a light touch!
rather grim message though

not a friendly bush
the corporate voice of God
as against Moses' Sprechstimme
as against Aron's blank stone face tenor
translating 3rd hand revelations 3rd hand

a number opera
anti-Wagner

crowd of God
crowd of the people
a dense onslaught of voices contending

Canals of Venice
The Spencer Glenn Band
Your Mother Should Know
Rendezvous - Seattle
Canals of Venice

The orchestration of Canals of Venice is gelling nicely. They were shy their trumpet player, which is a shame, but the gluey duo string harmony of viola and cello is an effective foil to Rob and Emily's duo of vocal timbres. That and all the parts, or each separately, can operate as adjuncts to the deliciously subtle drums. Both Rob and Emily have strong stage presences and are blessed with complementary levels of garrulousness. In short, a tremendously interesting and musically ambitious band that is fun to hear and re-hear.

The Spencer Glenn Band
The Spencer Glenn Band checks in as among the most exquisitely balanced ensembles I've heard in awhile. Spencer has a lovely light tenor that floats easily into falsetto, a bit (but just a bit) as though Simon could lift into Garfunkle and ease back. The arrangements are delicate and tight, free of showboating, everybody playing the song, rather than their axe.

Playing last, late on a Thursday night, the crowd had thinned out considerably by the time Neal & Karen took the stage. The set has been stripped down to just the rockers and moved along at a lively clip. Those who had to leave missed a honey.
Your Mother Should Know

And I would like to give kudos to Zach, the stage-manager and sound-person. He took great care that everybody sounded good, and did a fine job of both being clearly in charge and making everyone feel welcome. If the ghost that haunts the venue would like to return the two kick-drum feet that dropped into the void (one on the way in, one on the way out) Karen would be most appreciative.

Angelique Poteat
Jessika Kenney
Jim Knapp
Paul Gillespie

From Subterranea - Poteat

where we start is our stability and our return
where we go is tied to where we start
we return tied - elastic

Didn't catch the name - Kenney

whisper presence among voice
rooted :: up- or re- ??
circuit ritual a canon unwinding into
presence whisper air

Two Tunes  - Jim Knapp

The strength (and weakness) of jazz is one and the same with the strength (and weakness) of Bach: It is a language for solving problems posed, and it is always possible to find a way out from within itself, but the out it finds is illusory, a trick of mind, since it is still itself. I didn't catch the pianist's name, but he was fabulous.

Woodwind Trio - Gillespie

If this were a short story the words would be small, the sentences brisk, and the plot cabalistic.

O tenebroso giorno - Gesualdo - Consort of Musicke, Anthony Rooley

Each line, or set of lines, is set in an increasing complexity of imitative overlay, elision, and interfolding. Thoughts thicken, turn, and feed upon themselves. It ends because things end, but there is no resolution.

Konzert in G BWV 1048 - J.S. Bach - Festival Strings Lucerne, Rudolf Baumgartner

Pericope and Sermon. All derives from one, over and again. The universe is floriated, not cross-associated, not integrated.

Sonata in A Wq. 48 #6 - C.P.E. Bach - Bob von Asperen

Larded with discursive footnotes and comments. Worldly, scholarly, glossed and cross-bred.

Quartet in B-flat Op. 1 #1, Haydn - Tatrai Quartet

Solid. No nonsense here.

Symphony in D K111a(120) - Mozart - Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood, Jaap Schroder

Complete in its knowledge of what an orchestra is for, but doesn't have a clue as to what it might be capable of.

Sonata in C-sharp minor Op. 27 #2 - Beethoven - Gieseking

Just how little resonance can one get away with? Studied hesitation to clarify the melody, restrained throughout - except for a moment or three in the last movement when the earth shakes.

Symphony in D (String Symphony #2) - Mendelssohn - English Bach Festival Orchestra, William Boughton
