Track 8 [from Eisenbrey 2003]

My mom was an amateur violinist
and for several years
in the early oughts
she went to a chamber music summer camp

this is a souvenir CD
of the campers' final concert

this is a movement
for piano trio
not inexpressively played
though intonation is sometimes less than secure

Can't B Good - Janet Jackson [from Discipline]

for low lights
and something more comfortable

Middle - Cumulus [from I Never Meant It To Be Like This]

the internal shaping of the instrumental stanza
transpires
behind the drums' impervious beating of the pulse
insisting upon the bodies
in the pit

Melischromatica - Steve Layton [from Virtual Composition]

muscled backs
heaving ho
on heavy oars
pulling through
a viscous sea
the sea
fights back
the night
stretches on

A Cat's Life - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey, Olivia Sterne [from Keith Eisenbrey 6: 1988-1994]

feline body language
instantly alert
violent
changeable
using the do fa sol la
as moodshift signal
(or sol do re mi)

this fugue is rather fun
if I do say so myself
bear and a half to work up though

peculiar timeskip feeling
to the third act repeat

I have my moments
and Olivia was awesome

March 22, 2026

Sonata in F-sharp Major, Kk. 318 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

a figure
is any grouping
found to enable
a sense
of comprehensibility

a tonality
is a sense
of shape
or motion
within pitchspace

La muette de Portici, Act I - Daniel-François-Esprit Auber - Diego Torre, Oscar De La Torre, Angelina Ruzzafante, Wiard Witholt, Dessau Anhalt Theater Chorus, Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, Antony Hermus

fun fact
the role of the mute title character
was once played
by the future wife
of Hector Berlioz!

to open in the courtyard of a chapel
sets the story
within the public sphere
and under the watchful eyes of the Church

the overture might be the passing throngs
in their moods

this music
is closely linked to the characterization of the singer-roles
at their immediate moments
it provides no spoilers nor alternate viewpoints
we are in their heads
as
this music imagines it
for us

the chorus
is a character
representing the people
who are the background society
of the principals

the large ensemble segments
are quite fine
internally characterized

a sunny mood
wrecked
to end the act

Bunte Blätter: Novellete, Op. 99 #9 - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

curio puppet
spectacular accompaniment

it is intended
to be taken in
as a spectacle
a technical wonder

how gracefully it dances

Einsam bin ich, nicht alleine. Volkslied aus dem Schauspiel Preciosa, S. 453 (after Weber) - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

the Romantic imagination
individualized character
by getting inside of them
hence
the appeal of opera
as a popular art form
within civic life

Sonata 8, Op. 66 - Alexander Scriabin - Ruth Laredo

a figure
cycles
within a cycling rhythmic scheme
generating
a melodic moment
cycling through the whole

a deep pool indeed
bewitching aromas
the pool is stirred

March 23, 2026

the showbiz past
of jazz
become
a music
for aficionada
intellectualized

The Strenuous Life - Scott Joplin - E. Power Biggs

the bass
is separated rhythmically
from the chords
and the tune
from each of them
kept moving
with occasionally filler licks
between cycles

Twist and Shout - Bruce Springsteen [from Live at The Roxy]

played a bit too heavily
ponderous twist
not enough naked glee
gets weary

Come Home - T Bone Burnett [from Truth Decay]

a plea from the blues
the mouth harp
has its own share of troubles

Heading For The Light - Traveling Wilburys [from Traveling Wilburys]

into the sunset

A Poem - S. Eric Scribner [from Pianosphere]

a glittering surface
with pauses to peer through

maritime rural
golden hued
settle back
we'll hang out here for the evening

Construction 4 - Christian Asplund [from Brainstun]

scratching an image
into a hard even surface

Places We Exist - Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs [from Crooked Path]

Middle Ages - Cornelius Dufallo, Patrick Derivaz [from Bass Violin]

the room this is in
is picking up sounds from elsewhere
or rather
from several elsewheres
each sound
from its own elsewhere

Cafe Macchiato - Science of Deduction [from Alternative Works]

music made with electronic means
celebrates electricity

high end
edgy dive
techno slum lords

Poncho - Anna La Berge, Tom Baker [from Sand]

a poem
in a room of hidden mirrors
and crooked halls
ill-ly lit
brain state
fun house
in the grooves of this record
is the sound of John Cage

March 24, 2026

bring a fiddle
open strings
on the open sea

Mean Woman Blues - Roy Orbison [from For The Lonely]

sha la la la

The Man I Love - Ella Fitzgerald [from Love Songs: The Best of the Verve Song Book]

the orchestra
is clearly
for the most part
playing
exactly
the notes

for them
to play
keeps them
in shadow
disindividuated

The Dawntreader - Joni Mitchell [from Song to a Seagull]

spinning pretty fantasy
back cover copy
beach read

The Plainsman - Fairport Convention [from Meet On The Ledge]

some British fantasist

heavy ballast in this keel
poem
largely effaced
by heavy ballasted guitar down strums

the cycles disassemble

Fuck You - Choke The Pope [from Who Cares]

disaffected youth tantrum

Psalm 23 (meditation, responses) - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [from Keith Eisenbrey 6: 1988-1994]

in this version
I add an element
of durations
of nothing at all

the machine
at rest

a system
of three sound origins

each
always
distinct

formal cyclicity of the poem
a figure
explores pitchspace

Ain't Gonna Lay My Armor Down - McVay/Johnson [from Goodbye, Babylon]

the fierce determination of our forbears

My Man's Gone Now - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin]

hard left right track pan isolation
early stereo hi fi
bad idea

or
album like this
is a collaboration
between a singer
and a producer/arranger
all other persons
are vanished

(George had an alibi)

The Karen Tape Chapter 4 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [August 1963]

yawned until he swallowed a bee
a spacy story
with rabbits and whispers
and sleepiness and ground hogs
and an owl and a bumble bee
a lesson about kids being kept quiet
Scuppers the Sailor Dog
Neal reads all his books for us
bisyllabic fish:
fee-ish
a book about the usefulness of simple nouns
back to the little bunny
and a little yellow duck
two books in tandem?
or somehow
a complex tale
half of my poem book
which he runs off to get

I'm ready to play now

The Bridge - Dolly Parton [from Just Because I'm a Woman]

hyperisolation
they can't be in the same room
it's unseemly
they might get ideas

of the losers at the bar
in celebration of them

Rikki Dee - Bow Wow Wow

is an exciting moment
a threshold
to the underground party lights

start up the bus

March 25, 2026

Jasper's Barbecue - Frankie Jaxon [from That Devilin' Tune]

open with plain
answer with fancy

ad copy
sounds like quite a partying joint

Gold Wedding Ring - Peggy Lee [from Sea Shells]

if this were a book of illustrated poems
can only imagine the illustrations
would be painfuly sappy
in that way
that 50s greeting card art
could be

Lend Me Your Comb - The Beatles [from Anthology]

songs made from scraps of conversation
from among the presumed social milieu
of the young musicians

a snapshot of greater teendom

Security - Etta James [from Tell Mama]

thing of value
as a pledge
conversation overlaying the dance

Rapport 1 - Robert Morris, David Mott [from Open Space 26]

two musicians
and means
of allowing them
to share prerecorded sounds
mixed together
improvisationally
essentially
a collaboration of mixing boards
with multiple inputs
and control of the pan and gain

this was not as simple a thing to do then
(1973)
since all those prerecorded sounds were
(presumably)
on tape or vinyl
not computer files

this gig took some serious set up

young music nerds
in the 70s
what they did
for jollies

pretty wild stuff guys
though I probably wouldn't spin this
at a school dance
it would go over worse than Pink Floyd

Purple Haze - Billy  Goats [from Bard Sampler 1982-1983]

as a country twang blues

piano chord style

so polished
so soft
so harmless
pastel piety

Psalm 130 - Keith Eisenbrey - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey [from Keith Eisenbrey 6: 1988-1994]

my first piece
in a mod-17 derived pitch set set

an unevenly stretched pitch space
modeled
as a diatonic collection might be

Graveyard Blues - The Paradise Joy Boys [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

the continent's greater porch
telling the continent's greater troubles

Blackjack - Ray Charles [from Yes, Indeed!]

as a warning
I'll sing my blues

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World - The Shirelles [from The Shirelles Anthology]

the topsy turvied
fad fuddled culture
do not look behind the curtain

Magic Bus - The Who [from Magic Bus]

who produced this?
what were they thinking?
what did they think they were hearing?

Lake Washington Singers Concert 731225 - Lake Washington Singers, Betty Eisenbrey, JoAnne Deacon [recorded December 1973]

mom did what she could
to be serious about the Christmas concerts
as much as she could
lightening up for the Spring shows
this has some ambitious a capella numbers
sung quite creditably

I was 14
and may have been there

as it stands
this has a serious first half
and a lighter second half

for all I know
that's me with the jingle bells!
ah!
even more percussion again
some of that may be me

Pokey - Doug Seidel [from Bard Sampler 1982-1983]

messed up and half-assed
is a valid response

I Don't Care - Audio Two [from What More Can I Say]

long winded put down

Overture to Candide - Empire Brass Quintet [from Class Brass On The Edge]

shooting for L'Histoire
but cribs too literally

a day in the life

dancing
to be beautiful

in the light

Canadian Dwarf Samurai - Swingset Showdown [from Cymbal of Appreciation EP]

sea shanty character study

this music
is ecstatic dance
full body raunch
broadens out
into a gentler ride

Suite for Broken Instruments - Ensemble Unnamable [from Fourth Floor]

this music
is something happening in a room
might be music as well

March 26, 2026

Steamboat Man - Roy Harvey [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

this recording
is a near contemporary
of Steamboat Bill Jr.

some fine yodeling

going to the Lord knows where

Lines Upon a Tranquil Brow - Norman Monath [from Songs of the Pogo]

during the night
when we're shining the moon

Madame George - Van Morrison [from Astral Weeks]

minstrel man
sings the news of life

Souvenir - John Cage - Stefan Hussong

chancedly found
or not
the ear
joins similar sounds
into forms
figures
persons
intents

this part
is pushing that other part around
verbally

that other part
pleads

sonority builds
reminiscent of AKU

there's that grumpy part
in its massive slumber
and massiver snore

pleady part
is the pretty part

grumpy part
is a loudmouth
but is coming around

the snore
has not abated

grumpy part
is two parts
the loud mouth
and the snore

Gigantic - Pixies [from Surfer Rosa]

we want a sound
that sounds like
it is in our crowd

Each New Departure - David McIntire - Ryan Hare

a dramatic scene
with long tellings in it

everybody gets their say

Called from Potters Field - James King [from Bed by the Window]

folk tale gospel
resurrection of the least

Change Clothes - Jay-Z [from The Black Album]

sits on the edge of beat
to push it along

Oh, Forgotten - Solvents [from Manresa Castle]

bowed string
to add body
to a sound
in place of an electric guitar
this sound messes around in the tenor/bass/low strings resonance

Sweet's Too Slow - Ancient Warlocks [from Ancient Warlocks]

sound
to activate
the architectural resonance

shiver the temple's timbers
shake up the house

Fucking - Whitney Ballen [from You're a Shooting Star, I'm a Sinking Ship]

jealous seethe
inescapable cyclic thought loop

a neutral party

comic strip sized tale
the old
hide from Papa
shtick

quasi pizzicato tear drops

one prepares ones self
to venture into Babbitt

all the parts
of industrial production
in their spots
printers' type sets
artistic independence
as collaborative exclusion

Allemande de Liege - Baltimore Consort [from La Rocque 'N' Roll]

the space this is in
is clean and neutral
not unfriendly
but perhaps a bit antiseptic

Lost - Goodness [from Goodness 1995-1998]

we portray our fellows
with poetic sympathy

Old Man Crow - Scurvy Bastards [from Battle Born]

this song and album
is in my collection
because Karen found a 45 on the sidewalk
that had one of their songs on one side
unplayably scratched up
but not unlocatable on the webs
so I purchased it
and told the story
to the keeper of their sharing site
who sent me their other CD
as a bonus
because why not

Jericho - Peter Fedofsky [from Situations]

sudden echoic space helmet

Two Or Three Back And Around - Jesse Cantgerbury, Greg Sinibaldi [from Ascendant]

The Clicking Drums - Tom Varner, Neil Welch [from Out of Mud]

sound example

Lebanon - Keith Eisenbrey

for the past few years
I have been working my way
through the tunes
found in an 1846 shape note song book
arranging them
one by one
one every Sunday
for piano
usually
in three voices
sometimes two
not spending
more than a couple of hours
from start to final recording

this is number 142

"Now

do
leap
o'er

Red Pants Collective + Kin of the Moon
Heather Bentley, Kaley Lane Eaton, Giordana Falzone, James Falzone, Leanna Keith, Hannah Rice
The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

what portends before the song begins...

partly hushed private chats in a public space
attentions
preparing to key into collective experience
soon
the hush presaging

setup is relatively light on electronics
nary a laptop in sight

entrance of the celebrants
a composed event
slowed breathing
twisting the floor
walking from air
moving pillars
leaping to breathlessness

music sings to heal and restore
harass and beguile

leaves as gently as arrives

I have been in a strangely reclusive mood of late
but this was just what I needed and I'm glad we went.
I was especially taken with the permeable boundary
between the movement-artists and the sound-makers
- a remarkable and healing Gesamtkunstwerk.

Recorded

December 8, 2024

Argentina - Corina Nolting [from The World Sings Goodnight]

I believe this album
(a cassette tape)
was a gift to our family
at some point back in the 90s
when we had small kids
it was never a favorite

innocuous music is an existential problem

Banned Rehearsal 491 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [April 18, 1998]

assertions are made and quickly discarded
our thoughts wander
the sounds in this session
seem to be reluctant to get into common spaces with their fellow sounds
disinclined
to engage

goes through motions
puts in time
the possibility
that feedback could erupt
provides stakes
a too-easy effect?
aims too low?

the round-robin sessions
were predicated on an assumption
that if one was in the room
one was expected to be making sound
as a social requirement
but
does leaving the space
even
or
especially
if done on a schedule
and re-entering
merely make public
a decision
to not be engaging
in the prescribed manner
for a time
a decision
that doesn't need to be made so theatrically public?
an enforced shaming?
or
a spontaneously arising ritualization
of various transformations among the members
that affect their interactions?
an episode within a work in process

{journal entry of March 21, 2006:

narration by Isaac
lots
of plucked
and strucked
until the organ comes in
low
then carefully glowing
around
certain individual sound spaces

roundrobin session
with characteristic transparence and episodicity
one bad transfer spot
I wonder what that was about}

Intrada - Ryan Hare [from Intrada]

a blatant fanfare
for a blatant time

the extended techniques employed
(singing while playing?)
serve the music
because they are so clearly heard
on the composer's part
and
their sonic manifestations
are so precisely integrated into the pitch world of the piece

December 9, 2024

Banned Rehearsal 732 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [February 4, 2008]

microphone placement
and speaker placement
are determinants of the virtual space
the projected sound is in
(sounds are in)
although
a sensitive ear can tell
that some sound
is being projected from speakers
that sound
is not different
from sounds otherwise produced*
(sound is sound)
they are sounds with peculiarities

*the ear hears them
by the same mechanism
and wetware
the distinction
is entirely in-house
to the listener

we posit histories
for the sounds we hear
and
we fancy
we can determine traces
of that history
within the sound
as well
as though memories of artifacts' histories
(how those sounds got into those speakers)

clarinety feedback
electric guitars
and autoharp
and little bells
and xylophone

Snohomish Mash-Up Piece #1 - Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer, Steve Scribner [from Odds and Ends]

a complexly layered artifactual history
the senses in which
I know what I'm doing
are peripheral to the doing

Patti's Parlour Pieces 17 - 20 - Ken Benshoof - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, February 24, 2018]

careful attention
to the beats between beats

Suyama - Steve Peters [from Chamber Music]

its own virtual chamber of music
an odd little music-dimensioned maze
here is a heart of it

Geistliche Chor-Music, Op. 11, SWV 369-397 (1648), Volume 2: XXVI. Sehet an den Feigenbaum - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

how grandly we slowed
times within times

Deuxieme Ordre (ré): Passepied - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

too enjoyable to think

Barmherziges Herze Der Ewige Liebe, BWV 185 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Ton Koopman

imitation:
ritualized memory
presented as an aesthetic process

finger slap
or extra-resonant sounds
from the organ(?)
not exactly part of the pitch-music
a marker
for a voice within the fabric
this stop just does that

Keyboard Sonata in E-flat Major, Kk. 253 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

runs a prescribed course
this part is for endurance
trial by modulation

December 10, 2024

Symphony in C Major, Wq. 182/3 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - English Consort - Trevor Pinnock

count carefully
we're full of sudden divisions and hold-ups
we form incoming sound
into an expression
we desire to make
with that sound
even
if that desire
was inchoate
until that incoming sound
formed it
or awakened it
from in us

String Quartet in D minor, K. 421 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Budapest Quartet

a common tone
sunk into the depths
by a melody of intervals
by the book cadences
extended by fragmentation and repetition
still signify formal articulations
serve as punctuation

excursus:
in two major-key collections
related to each other by transposition of six semi-tones
the subdominant of one
is the leading tone of the other
and vice-versa
of course
and
they are the two common tones between them
6 semi-tones apart
as can be easily seen
that's why they're common tones

String Quartet in G Major, Op. 54 #1 - Franz Joseph Haydn - Endellion Quartet

always clever
where all the parts come from
figures
sliced out of melody
dissected fancy

in the Haydnesque four-movement format
the first and last movements
are generally in the same key
but
they are different versions of that key
derived by independent means
no two G Majors are made alike

Mass in D Major, Op. 123 "Missa Solemnis" - Ludwig van Beethoven - New Philharmonia Orchestra, Otto Klemperer, Elisabeth Soderstrom, Marga Hoffgen, Waldemar Kmentt, Martti Talvela

whence this material?
it coalesces instantaneously
a blinding flash
it is essential
that each voice
stick to its guns
do NOT glance fetchingly
at any of your fellows
(or you're next)

suddenly
we've still been here
at the blinding flash

Gloria:
(a reasonable reaction)

successive entrances
stacked
create the illusion
of further entrances
within the mass
of those original entrances
as they proceed

psycho-acoustic moil
emerging from everything
and nothing

the soloists
are not soloists
they are parts of a thing happening
with fiery tongues

stern credo-lotry
he means what he says

the voices float upon the Gospel
cyclic recitation
Kierkegaardian repetition
echoes
and echoes
of echoes
of entrances
and entrances
of entrances
it overwhelms utterly

(a truly epic amen)

the harmonics
of wonder and awe

we have moved beyond the world of figures

Frühlingssehnsucht - Franz Schubert - Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, Gerald Moore

tempo change
as though glancing worriedly over ones shoulder

6 Concert Studies on Caprices by Paganini, Op. 10 #6 in E Minor, Sostenuto - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

roll a chord
and the downbeat
is the top of the top

a figuration freak like me

Polonaise in A Major, Op. 40 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Peter Katin

entrance of the grandees
their medals that gleam
and jewels that glitter
pomposity after pomposity

December 11, 2024

Denk es, O Seele! - Hugo Wolf - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daniel Barenboim

toward
stream-of-consciousness through-composition
away
from Romantic folkish strophes

Etude in F-sharp Major, Op. 42 #4 - Alexander Scriabin - Michael Ponti

gently drifting down to slumber

Suite, Op. 8 - Darius Milhaud - François Choveaux

1
softness upon softness
a gently colored painting
soft trees and gentle waters

2
a wind-up toy dance
steps ex mechanisma

3
a forthright approach
will see us through difficulties

4
dark and murky
as the sun descends
adventure portended
be brave
and stand firm

5
is this dawn we see?
a paler dark
in the East sky
gathering our forces
for struggles ahead
re-waking reluctantly

In a Nutshell #2: Gay but Wistful - Percy Grainger - Percy Grainger [from Percy Grainger plays Percy Grainger]

in the style
of piano pounding for the flicks
no sensibilities will be offended

Confidénces - Ernesto Nazareth - Marcelo Bratke

the somewhat sentimental music of the streets that surrounded modernity

to be sung on stage

vigorous piano pounding

my how her lines float!

Mass - Igor Stravinsky - English Bach Festival Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein, Trinity Boy's Choir, English Bach Festival Chorus, Nicholas Cleobury

stripped down
to follow twisted paths
to articulatory concords
and their clear progeny
intimate statements
of inscribed words
as sung
by the assembled

liberate dissonance
and liberate harmony
and notes and syllables while you're at it

one can listen
to a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass
as a concert piece
or
one can listen
as a believer
how might it benefit us
to make it a conscious choice?
(or both of course)

this faith is timeless
ecstatic
monasterial

practiced

histrionics are irrelevant here

it prays constantly
holy repetitions
a traditional incantation

of course
it is always clear
that this music
is about The Mass
in a peculiarly
meta
manner

Preface

"Of modern standers-of-mast-heads we have but a lifeless set; mere stone, iron, and bronze men; who, though well capable of facing out a stiff gale, are still entirely incompetent to the business of singing out upon discovering any strange sight. There is Napoleon; who, upon the top of the column of Vendome, stands with arms folded, some one hundred and fifty feet in the air; careless, now, who rules the decks below; whether Louis Phillippe, Louis Blanc, or Louis the Devil. Great Washington, too, stands high aloft on his towering main mast in Baltimore, and like one of Hercules' pillars his column marks that point of human grandeur beyond which few mortals will go. Admiral Nelson, also, on a capstan of gun-metal, stands his mast-head in Trafalgar Square; and even when most obscured by that London smoke, token is yet given that a hidden hero is there; for where there is smoke, must be fire. But neither great Washington, nor Napoleon, nor Nelson, will answer a single hail from below, however madly invoked to befriend by their counsels the distracted decks upon which they gaze; however, it may be surmised, that their spirits penetrate through the thick haze of the future, and descry what shoals and what rocks must be shunned."

Herman Melville, from Moby-Dick; or, The Whale.

Texts

Recorded

November 9, 2024

Daddy Rollin' (In Your Arms) - Dion [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

lopsided blues stanzas

Aladdin Sane - David Bowie [from Aladdin Sane]

a song of alternating states
verses and choruses
are states
upon which
words or instrumental solos
are inscribed

3 Record Set (end) - Anthony Braxton - Oberlin College Orchestra, Kenneth Moore

threads to follow
through a dim space
tonality
a thick paste
enclosed
cut off
there is no outside
all directions are static
indifferent

November 10, 2024

Brain - Dan Sedia [recorded live at Bard College, March 18, 1983]

a bichordal guitar-drum composition
with an all-off position
and a flourish to finish

Concerto 10, Op. 413 - Alan Hovhannes - Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz, Martin Berkofsky, Chris Butler

a music of nowhere
a cocoon without metamorphosis
all contact with what exists beyond the temple walls
have been severed and lost
muted colors

one interesting thing:
he is treating the solo piano
as a melodic instrument
not only
that
there is no real counterpoint in its part
but that
there are hardly any chords at all

Banned Rehearsal 330 - John E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [June 4, 1993]

peekaboo baby
from the start
a wooden rattle
loudly shaken
near the mic
in a rhythm
fades from awareness
before vanishing in fact
before re-appearing

the ukulele
is like a baby guitar

sounds are toys we play with

John just pulled the plug on the Funmaker

a precise scientific readout
of the silliness in the room
more tape
that's my boy

November 11, 2024

Finalala - Amy Denio - Die Knodel [from Tutto Bene]

cabaret and circus and fair and dance

Sounds of the Brush: Improvisation 3 - Gust Burns, Adam Diller, Keith Eisenbrey, Mike Marlin, DL Scott, Adam Weiss [March 17, 2003]

a bit of poetry in pitch conjuration

Freedom is on the March - Empty Cage Quartet [from Stratostrophic]

winds climb stepwise above a landscape of bass and percussion

Attitude - Doug Palmer - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, March 1, 2013]

taking punches at a sack of sand

Every Time I Hear That Song - Brandi Carlyle [from By The Way, I Forgive You]

there is no less reliable a narrator
than that of a breakup song

rhythm/rhyme
as they are commonly understood
are aids to the immediate comprehension of the "rim" (number)
in the old sense

Subvector Colloquy (unedited) - Tom Baker, Keith Eisenbrey, Leanna Keith, Jim Knodle [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, March 3, 2023]

negotiating a space for conversations
three interviews and an open forum

improvisation
can liberate attention
from obsessive preparation

an arithmetic
of irrational rim

an organized entrance
to the quartet
one at a time
in order of appearance
piano guitar flute trumpet

this is really lovely

November 12, 2024

L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Act II - Claudio Monteverdi - Orfeo   Orchestra, Sergio Vartolo

from in what person
does a monologue/aria address us?

from what person do we hear it?

are we eavesdropping
or do the characters turn their masks
partly toward us?

in Baroque small-stage opera
we are closer to the words
and the page
hearing an opera
was more like reading a drama
than like seeing it

sequences of stepwise-related figures
arising
in the context
of an operatic ensemble

to these modern ears
the relative dearth of ensembles and choruses
(as compared with, say, Mozart)
would get monotonous
were not each line so demanding of attention

deep characterizations
not for the faint of heart

Geistliche Chor-Music, Op. 11, SWV 369-397 (1648), Volume 2: XXII. Unser Wandel ist im Himmel - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

didactic setting:
set in order to teach:
learn these words
by hearing their music

styles do not succeed each other
they consume each other

Praeludium in G Major, BuxWV 162 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

an elaborate culture accreted to the Church
to grace it
should now
the Church
shed it?

unsettled

Cinquieme Ordre (la) : La Villers. Gracieusement - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

costumer of music
to the King of France
center of the civilized world

Sinfonia in E-flat Major, BWV 791 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Edith Picht-Axenfeld

a duet of voices with guitar
the harpsichordist uses a two manual instrument
left hand manual is muted
to depict the guitar

Keyboard Sonata in B-flat Major, Kk. 249 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

this music nibbles at itself
piranha-like
forces doors into the inner tonalities
not so distant
but you'll never find them again

Symphony in E Major, Wq. 182/6 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - English Consort, Trevor Pinnock

it is important for everyone in the orchestra
to appear quite busy and useful
so they get paid
they hope
Prussian efficiency
so fleissig!

Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 333 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Kristian Bezuidenhout

always the storyteller
verging on the confessional

String Quartet in C Major, Op. 54 #2 - Franz Joseph Haydn - Tatrai Quartet

sophisticated amusement
its tonality is the subject matter of its going
rather than the substrate of its social propriety
a political mirror
held from within
an image of its society

last movement
is really two movements
a long slow one
and a sizable fast one
each complete
back to the long slow music to finish

Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 106 "Hammerklavier" - Ludwig van Beethoven - Peter Serkin

possibly the craziest symphonic music he ever composed
there are some interesting acoustic things going on with this period instrument
it even includes a tuning up figure to start the fourth movement
the fugue
is a heck of a chase
lickety-split
exhilarating as all get-out
a battle to the death or the glory

November 13, 2024

Sonata in A Major, D. 959 - Franz Schubert - Alfred Brendel

proceeds streamlike
through merry burbles and quiet pools
stream's eye view
as it experiences itself
from rise to outflow
nights and days
in their ways and dreams

lakes at night
and their nymphs and naiads
all the assorted fae
and fae adjacent
in ancient battles
nightly renewed

it rains upon its face
hop frogs dancing
log to log
retire to their home ponds
and pipes
and joys
tales of old campaigns
and heroes
and escapades

Nocturne in F Major, Op. 15 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Claudio Arrau

domestic peace calms violent passion

Presto Passionato, Op. Posth. - Robert Schumann - Peter Frankl

more than a babbling brook's force to this
it is being powered and pushed and thrust
by the will power of human heroic striving

Via Crucis, Station XIII - Jesus wird vom Kreuz genommen - Franz Liszt - Reinbert De Leeuw

unbearably tender

Auf ein altes Bild - Hugo Wolf - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daniel Barenboim

spare

Das Orgel-Büchlein, BV B 27: No. 10, Jesus Christus, unser Heiland (After J. S. Bach's BWV 665) - Ferruccio Busoni - Wolf Harden

implies as many other keys as it establishes
following the logic of the chorale melody
as its key center

Etude in F-sharp minor, Op. 42 #2 - Alexander Scriabin - Ruth Laredo

inscribing oneself onto future events

Symphony in E-flat Major (#2) - Franz Schmidt - Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Neeme Järvi

1
is music well-served by the gargantuan?
the large orchestra?
the immense hall?
the national audience?
even if it becomes a mirror to that national audience
so they can hear themselves
(which is also the essential Ivesian approach)

2
our national character on display
its harmonious virtues

a set of variations
Straußian
but well-behaved
an orgy of lusciousness
an eternal Busby Berkeley thingy
legs and legs and legs
and bustles and bustles and bustles
and fans and fans and fans

An Austrian in Paris

3
meanwhile
back here in contrapuntal land
shy
about its inner workings

The Leprechaun's Dance - Percy Grainger [from Percy Grainger plays Percy Grainger]

I can almost picture the art on the sheet-music cover

Theme and Variations - Ruth Crawford Seeger - Jenny Lin

OK it's derivative (an early work)
but there's an ear in there
to rhythm and its propensities
and she does know her counterpoint

Le baiser de la fée - Igor Stravinsky - Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Wilhelm Furtwängler

[recorded May 18, 1953]

each thing doing a thing
is doing that thing
and no other thing
neither right nor left is turned to
||:rule:
it is not necessary to see the dance
to understand a ballet score
but it helps
at times
to imagine a dance to it
don't worry about the actual plot
or Balanchine's style
or the original costumery
this music dances for us
or
better
get up and dance yourself
no one's watching

Quatre Romances Sans Paroles: Romance 2, Op. 129 #2 - Darius Milhaud - François Choveaux

a 48 second Romance
so fleeting so fancy

Mathis der maler: excerpt #4 - Paul Hindemith - Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Leopold Ludwig, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

an Artist is their own state
heroic independence
and other delusions of grandeur

Hello, My Darling (with Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra) - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

a band of musicians discuss a song from within it

God Don't Like It - Elder A. Johnson [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

damn! that guitar sound!

Rock Me Lucky - Joe Lamond - [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

entirely meretricious

Carol - Chuck Berry - [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

the music is intended to act as a social lubricant
to move your feet
out onto the body-display floor

Samson Agonistes (Symphonic Portrait) - Robert Starer - Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Valek

what is the social purpose
of making orchestra music since WW II?
career fulfillment?
fodder for the institutions
so they can continue to pretend
to be relevant
while changing nothing?

a star in one's earthly crown?

November 14, 2024

Street Fightin' Man - The Rolling Stones [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

square and colorless

Irish Washerwoman - Old Thresher's Fife and Drum Band [from The Art of Field Recording, Volume 1]

comes on strong
bows out with a standard tag
(shave and a haircut six bits)
all done in less than a minute

13 Emily Dickinson Songs: #1: Perhaps you'd like to buy a flower - George Perle - Bethany Beardslee, Morey Ritt [from A Tribute to Soprano Bethany Beardslee]

ends of lines to beginnings of next lines linked
forward vowel on the i of till
bright and clear

The Late Great Johnny Ace - Paul Simon [from The Essential Paul Simon]

any tribute to a life
from with a life
is about that life

Banned Playalong 3 - Aaron Keyt [January 20, 1988]

a solid hum
to keep us anchored
keyboard chords pull against it
the interval
between anchor and chord
is at an angle of pitch

(see fig. 1)
the hum is a creature of the recording process
(artifactual)
the piano chords also
but
their stimulating agent
is a human
more immediately discernable

it is not a desire to express my emotions
(my feelings)
that drives
rather
it is a desire
to express my humanity
as immediately as possible
likewise
my desire for music
is a desire
for a connection with a human
at their most immediate

however
one could read the hum
as being as fully intentional a part of the tape-artifact as anything

the work
is its recording

(*is the angle of acoustic yank different than the angle of pitch-class yank?)

hums elicit further hums from tones
tones shed hums
they fall into the hum bin
at the center of hummity
a sedimentary hum
is a dense layer of hum

music for a wandering mind

Sabre Dance - Empire Brass [from Class Brass on the Edge]

the back rows of the orchestra get rowdy
arranged for brass enthusiasts

Banned Rehearsal 489 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 28, 1998]

we emerge from our muck
fixed in frustration
a discussion is engaged
strenuous and fierce
stress induced friction
Banned Rehearsal
is a journal of artifacts
we put together something like a rhythm groove
choppy guitar says bwá
the Mighty W appears in full bundler regalia

{journal entry of March 19, 2006:

has transfer issues throughout
especially at the high volume end
must have been one of our bad days
lots of gonzo drumming}

Music for Bassoon - Joshua Parmenter - Ryan Hare [from Intrada]

performed in conjunction with a computer program
that processes the incoming sounds in composed ways
a pattern of filters and inputs
suddenly there are bassoons everywhere
chattering even in the stairwells and broom closets

quite the ride guys!

Zither Film 8 - Keith Eisenbrey [January 21, 2008]

it separates like milk and cream
hints of regularity

November 15, 2024

Sextet II: Apostillas a Mil Panaderos - Tomas I. Gueglio Saccone - Latitude 49 [from Curious Minds]

is up-to-the-minute performance practice
worth the trouble
or will it gray out other compositional potentials?
that is
if the purpose of a note
is to carry a technique
rather than
the technique articulating the note
what are we left with?
a string of techniques?
the colors of things
their surfaces
shiny and new

Partita - Benjamin Boretz - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, February 24, 2018]

I did somewhat better at controlling the tempo for these
but all those parkour leaps got my fingers all cross-fumbled
so it ends up being pretty much a hatchet job
clearly beyond my abilities to pull off live
oh well
what's frustrating
is that I know what all those notes are
and have a clear idea in my ear
about how they fit together

Comfort Me - Carla Thomas [from Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos]

no element distracts
attention riveted start to finish

In Session at The Tintinabulary

Coronation - Keith Eisenbrey

November 11, 2024

Gradus 404 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

three rungs anticipating December 14 at 1412
(12/14 at 1412, heh heh)
we seep into the new rung
from one
to a great plenty
seepage continues
travel
by registral adjacency
a slow broad sweep of the field
variant sweeps
at other resolutions
