Preface

"Many in America remained unreconciled to Parliament's authority; many in Britain resented the Americans' ability to flout the law with impunity. The latter feeling gave rise to a demand that the colonies compensate the home government for the cost of stamping all that paper, which was never used.

[Benjamin] Franklin registered a sardonic judgment on this demand. In an anonymous letter to a London journal he wrote that the affair put him in mind of a Frenchman who used to accost English visitors on the Pont-Neuf in Paris, with effusive compliments in his mouth and a red-hot poker in his hand.

'Pray Monsieur Anglais,' says he, 'Do me the favour to let me have the honour of thrusting this hot iron into your backside:'

'Zoons, what does the fellow mean! Begone with your iron, or I'll break your head!'

'Nay, Monsieur,' replied he, 'if you do not choose it, I do not insist upon it. But at least you will in justice have the goodness to pay me something for the heating of the iron.'"

Keith Eisenbrey 32: Sabbatical Improvisations (part 3) 2014

In 2013 I had reached an inflection point in my big project, Études d'exécution imminent, and took a sabbatical (indifferently observed) from composing written-down music. I filled the time with various forms of improvisation, both "in-the-moment" composing, and sometimes puttering about with multi-tracking and other digitally applied effects. Here is the third bunch of them..

Group Variations I - Benjamin Boretz - Ensemble Nomad

{NB: Ben sent this recording to me recently, and the effect of it was as though a fascinating object that had been a presence in my consciousness for decades suddenly rose and spoke. I listened to it each day of listening this week.}

unstillness
exploited moments
dis-ceasing
pushing through the shape of the events it creates
by pushing through the events it creates
start at all times
observe all angles
absorb all obstacles

Madrigals, Book VIII: Altri canti d'amor, tenero arciero - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

general acclamation

Sehet an die Feigenbaum, SWV 394 - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

repetition
imitation of entrances and figures

Group Variations I - Benjamin Boretz - Ensemble Nomad

so how is the going of this?
each note
a probe
a leap
a new now
or also
reverberation
of the other new nows
that constellate about them

after all these years
this piece continues to astonish me
by remaining as recalcitrant to assimilation
into anything like familiarity
the landmarks behave differently each time

this performance is astonishingly fine
the whole comes across
as a single
albeit complex
statement
a firm challenge

Es ist nichts Gesunde an meinem Leibe, BWV 25 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Amsterdam Baroque Choir, Ton Koopman

we recognize in Berlioz or Schumann or Liszt
(such as chromaticism
eschewal or subversion of binary forms
et cetera)
useful

of that Spirit?
that is
do we understand Romanticism
because we understand how chromaticism works?

Group Variations I - Benjamin Boretz - Ensemble Nomad

I became acquainted with Group Variations
before I had heard of Ben
outside of the card catalog
in the University of Washington Listening Library
one might say
that Group Variations
or the card
introduced Ben to me

it came up again
in John Rahn's theory seminars
where some of Ben's output was being discussed
that was the computer version (Group Variations II)
of course

the 1968 orchestra recording
didn't come to my acquaintance
until quite recently

but
these players
get up and say stuff with those notes
the piece
is awake
it asks
what we presuppose

at some point
I decided
that one way I might come to a more direct acquaintance
with the orchestral version
was
to copy out the score
with engraving software
which I did
(and promised myself
I would never do that sort of thing again)
during that process
Ben gave me his copy of the orchestral score
which is considerably easier to read
than the one you get
when you order the dissertation version
which
is where I had started

I believe these folks
are using my computer score
and possibly
my parts
if so
my plan
succeeded brilliantly

Gradus 232 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [August 26, 2013]

I find myself fond of tangles
as designs
in photographic space
and in pitch space

a tangle develops organically
when
for instance
independently growing vegetable organs
interact with each other
in the sky
or in the soil

one might say
they compete
but
that's only our ascription
of motive
to the vegetable organs themselves
each individual vegetable being
does what it does
without requirement
of a motive
for doing so

a tangle
is an inscription upon space
of
coevally developing beings

is this music a tangle?
if not
I can make it so
by asking
should I so desire

I find myself fond of tangles
so
I suppose
I do so desire

Bickleton, WA
the Gordian Knot
was a tangle
brute force its undoing
a tangle
can be easily broken
but less easily disentangled
better
I think
to join it
entangle oneself
an agent
of pleaching

only colonialists
need machetes
to move
in the jungle

but
what is a tangle as an image?
an unsolvable puzzle
a convolution
(a self?)
a synthesis
tangles
intrigue our speculationary organs
wrest our attentions

I prefer tangles to grids

as the liquid tickles it
in flowing through
birds chirrup in its outer space
I do not recall
my reasons
for making any of these parts

Group Variations I - Benjamin Boretz - Ensemble Nomad

so here it is
utterly unlike any other music
on any level that matters
to it
its lyricism
is obsessed
with figures of bare quantity
two is two
and three is three
and yet
it is a lyricism
a poetic
nothing unrhetorical about it
there is flesh and blood behind it

amplitude is not presence

Bickleton, WA
If I Can't Have The Sweetie - Paul Whiteman [from That Devilin' Tune]

if the key isn't where you looked first
try again
first class
big city sound
for the roaring 20s

loose drinks and strong dames

Violin Blues - The Johnson Boys [from Really The Blues]

blues singer
as a folk-clown
medicine
for troubles
magnetic mojo

From Ab to C - John Kirby [from That Devilin' Tune]

something about the melody
reminds me of Thelonious Monk:
a way with patterns in the contour
Misteriosoic

Coleshill - Keith Eisenbrey

June 9, 2025

Gradus 415 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

a gathering of tones
dreaming of past melodic attachments
silence
a sleep beyond dreaming

the long silences
become
for me
an essential feature of the project
but not
because I'm listening
to the music the
street makes
but
because
that
is where I find myself
asking questions of myself
reflective

what one really hears
is ones self
blabbering on and on
the blabbering
being part of the ritual of it
after all

blab berries
blab bears
blown bears

tones on lonely quests
tones in caves
tones atop towers
ascetic tones
teasing tones
out of tones

blown tones
blue tones

Music of Ken Benshoof

As a young composer-pianist I was profoundly fortunate to have worked with the eminent Seattle-area composer Ken Benshoof when I was at the University of Washington. These recordings are from various recitals I gave between 2004 and 2018, except those of the last four Preludes and the last four of Patti's Parlour Pieces, which were made at my home in 2022.

Tracks 1-7: Sweeter Than Wine: American Folk Images (1959)
Tracks 8-31: Patti's Parlour Pieces (2000)
Tracks 32-55: 24 Preludes (2003)

Preface

"Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way? Or is it, that as in essence whiteness is not so much a color as the visible absence of color, and at the same time the concrete of all colors; is it for these reasons that there is such a dumb blankness, full of meaning, in a wide landscape of snows - a colorless, all-color atheism from which we shrink? And when we consider that other theory of the natural philosophers, that all other earthly hues, - every stately or lovely emblazoning - the sweet tinges of sunset skies and woods; yea, the gilded velvets of butterflies, and the butterfly cheeks of young girls all these are laid on from without; so that all deified Nature absolutely paints like the harlot, whose allurements cover nothing but the charnel-house within; and when we proceed further, and consider that the mystical cosmetic which produces every one of her hues, the great principle of light, for ever remains white or colorless in itself, and if operating without medium upon matter, would touch all objects, even tulips and roses, with its own blank tinge - pondering all this, the palsied universe lies before us a leper; and like wilful travellers in Lapland who refuse to wear colored and coloring glasses upon their eyes, so the wretched infidel gazes himself blind at the monumental white shroud that wraps all the prospect around him. And of all these things the Albino whale was the symbol. Wonder ye then at the fiery hunt?"

Herman Melville, from "Moby-Dick; Or, The Whale."

confirms the hint

the course of a stream
the fickle face
of insensible waters

Preludes 17-20 - Ken Benshoof - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepher Center, Seattle February 24, 2018]

these pieces suit me
because
they respond to niceties of touch

Ussers of Sleep Part 1 - S. Eric Scribner [from Ussers of Sleep]

sounds emerge with patience
a region of change is encountered
the emerged sounds persist
strengthened

we are told a tale

Cor mio, non - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Allesandrini

a poetry
in which
the lines of words and notes
are allowed
to consort
with each other
in immediacy

Johannes-Passion - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

imitative entrances of voices
models
the spread of the Word

the power of the music
is turned
to the service
of the vernacular unveiling
of the mysteries
sung clearly
in a public space

January 6, 2025

Praeludium in C Major, BuxWV 137 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

extensive self-announcement
the relative prominence
of the fugue subject
vis-á-vis Bach's manner
is interesting

Gleichwie Der Regen Und Schnee Vom Himmel Fällt, BWV 18 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, Ton Koopman

alternating
a basso solo line subject
with
tutti orchestra treatment

Schütz sets the text
Bach sets the commentary
also
he sets us
reading the commentators
calmly and clearly
then
sitting back
to think it over
in the chorale

Keyboard Sonata in F Major, Kk. 256 - Domenico Scarlatti - Piete-Jan Belder

always restart
as cheery as you can
you may need its light
in dark places

Sinfonia in B-flat Major, Op. 18 #2 "Overture to Lucia Stilla" - Johann Christian Bach  - Failoni Orchestra, Hanspeter Gmür

effective use of the plainest devices
in the service
of establishing patterns
for expectations to latch on to
there is no disobedience in this music

"Vada adagio, Signorina" - Aria for "La Quakera spiritosa" (Guglielmi) - Franz Joseph Haydn - Orchestre de Chambre de Laussanne, Antal Doráti

in the very best of taste
and also fashionable

Sonata in C Major, Wq. 55/1 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - Miklós Spányi

this key
is scurrying along spiderishly
this key
settles in glumly
this key
is happy to show you its room
tell you its secrets

Sonata in C Major, K. 330 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Lili Kraus

such a happy carefree fellow
such good company
ages well too
into a well-regulated domesticity
with serious
and learned discussions
on serious
and learned matters
but now
back to fun and games

all tucked in
g'night
more adventures
on the morrow

Mass in D Major, Op. 123 "Missa Solemnis" - Ludwig van Beethoven - London Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Chorus, Colin Davis, Anna Tomova-Sintow, Patricia Payne, Robert Tear, Robert Lloyd

this music
moves through its prayer
across a multitude
an awful stillness
up and down
confounded

this hedge of polyphony
each figure
a composition
of figure parts

In der Ferne, D. 957 #6 - Franz Schubert - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Gerald Moore

alien of all
severed from home

January 7, 2025

Nocturne in G minor, Op. 15 #3 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

the order
in which a figure unfolds
problematizes the sequence
by which
both chord
and key
do so

in the standard practice
at the time of Chopin
and within that culture
a chord
could not be understood
prior to its role
within a key
and
a key
couldn't be established
without chords
(which
don't exist
as such
before the key is established)
in other words
a key
is an unfolding relation
obtaining
among pitches

chords
are just one way
to look at it

Fantasie in C Major, Op. 17 - Robert Schumann - Peter Frankl

the key
can slip awry
from any of its parts
holding it all together
is a task for heroes
post-Napoleonic

puzzling out the proper assembly
of improper parts

the rhythm of the figures
within the figures
affects the steadiness
of the rhythm
of the figures' modulations
within
the flow
of steadiness
articulating
the flow of phrases
from within the figures
of those phrases
the figures
sweep
through the music's flow

Selbstgeständnis - Hugo Wolf - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daniel Barenboim

a song of secret doubt

Sonata in F Minor, Op. 6 (#1) - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

the room was packed when we got there
we squeeze our lines in somehow

turmoil and all

so much drama
these slow chords
have lost their key
it is no more
they mourn it
such a lively key it was too
we will mourn slowly
in Schubertian wastes

Preludes Book II: No.5, Bruyeres - Claude Debussy - Walter Gieseking

line drawings of a music

Colonial Song - Percy Grainger - Percy Grainger [from Percy Grainger plays Percy Grainger]

for the royalists in the house

now they're all singing
full throated patriarchalism
they slumber into their booths

Xango - Heitor Villa-Lobos - Teresa Berganzo, Juan Antonio Alvarez Parejo

Shrimp Man - Moses Mason [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

Now They Call It Swing (take 2) - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

rhythms have their seasons
a true swing
is unmatchable

Four Transcriptions from Emerson (mid 1930's): No. 1 (end) - Charles Ives - Charles Ives [from Charles Ives plays Charles Ives]

a magic wobble
as though heard through a ring modulator

filtering:
making use of a technology
designed to be faithful
to make an unfaithful sound
and call it new

Sally Mae - John Lee Hooker [from The Legendary Modern Recordings]

a complaint
what troubles are:
the blues

Symphony in E minor, Op. 93 (#10) - Dmitri Shostakovich - U.S.S.R. Symphony Orchestra, Yevgeny Svetlanov

the notes are placed with care
like grave-stones

nationalism

which can't see all
nor hear all

it

not
a being

the shrill scream of propaganda

Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

tooting one's horn
in third person

Duo for Violin and Cello - Edward T. Cone - John Whitfield, Cyrus Stevens

this music
has a task to accomplish
and matters to discuss
they go at it
with a right good will
the operation
is occasionally quite delicate
but
often
demands muscular exertion
a story
may have unfolded

This Is My Country - The Impressions [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

it was a moralistic time
so the music pulpit
figgered
statements
would sell records

Rosalyn - David Bowie [from Pin Ups]

proto punk
straight ahead

Don't Come Close - Ramones [from Road to Ruin]

urban sincerity
the back story
to be filled in
by the listener

KEEAK 830329 - Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [recorded at Bard College, March 29, 1983]

synth takes a solo
piano takes occasional notes
they expose each other's weaknesses
but
work
at getting independent thought processes
working together

notes*
are actuated ideas
{*or musical sounds in general}

the pianist
is fond of throwing wrenches into the works

piano:
its tone is plain
but its touch is intimately malleable
::
synth:
its tone is varied
but its touch is generic

piano falls into a groove
which can't be escaped
without assistance
from the synth
the trick
is to think
in activity mode
rather than
making obvious sense mode
this session
is at its best
when one turns
to the other
and asks what the hell they're doing
but
much of it
is also
quite lovely

No One Has - Mudhoney [from Superfuzz Bigmuff]

a bass
to budge ones bowels
(with attitude)

we love being a hero
and identifying
with one being a hero

Banned Rehearsal 334 (B) - John E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [July 17, 1993]

it is Saturday evening
John
is pushing
a truck
across a drum
we blow
the polyptical reed
and John
laughs
we play
the hoot hoot game
Aaron
must have gotten a haircut
his head
looks different
Aaron's beard
(as in the Psalm)
no John
that does not toot
and does not belong in the mouth
negotiating
outcry
and lingual expression
the outcry
is perfectly honest
as is
the lingual expression
the difference
is modality
fine-tuning
ones behavior
to the prevailing
(telepathic)
norm

language socializes us
as does music

music can't specify what language does
any more than language
can specify
what music does
nothing
can specify
what song does
(old magic)

human expression
is unspecifiable
by recording
or
any other practice of inscription

we throw our thoughts
into all the uncertainties
of future times

we are a purposeful group

milk in a tiny bottle
I want it I want it I want it
repetition
is a structural gambit
learned
or arising
in toddlerhood
interesting
that
as language
is acquired
by our young
the rhythm
and pitch
of our language
is acquired
along with the lexicon and syntax
(does Chomsky include that aspect in any of his writings? hm)
no choice
but grow

the Aaronsbundler Allusion is summoned

I want apple juice
in five individually enunciated syllables
I want X
the ursentence
apple juice blues
a dog is barking on the tape
inscribed
in magnetized metal element fluctuations

potato potato
celery celery
broccoli and squash
and yams yams yams
and corn

|| NB there are two Banned Rehearsals labelled 334
I plead the effect of the decade of chaos
as to any defects in my indexing system during the 90s ||

Hans
kitty kit
cork is what I see
in the ocarina
why? well . . .

contextualist or formalist?
who knows?

Mystery Chord!
in scratched rhythm
can you hear birds?

{journal entry of September 10, 1998:
the amplifier
is a toy
we blow up our sounds
the intentional misbalance
of the old days
are back
we are a purposeful group
"I want it."
a study
in non-integration
on and off
"can you hear birds?"}

Track 2 - Richard Rorex, Reid Merriman [from Mood for Richelle]

hobbyist music
is often characterized
by a sort of bland competence
it has been taken up
as one might macramé
or military history
nothing wrong with that
but
for me
it fails to engage itself

Gradus 40 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 31, 2003]

[A(1), A(2)..., A(4)] (silly ellipses)

January 9, 2025

Contrapunktus XI.2 (in memoriam David Lewin) - J. K. Randall [from Open Space 22]

these notes
have to do with each other
across the board
decays don't linger here

Banned Rehearsal 834 - John Cage, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [April 1, 2013]

opening night
no doubt
what we do
transpires
within the hurly burly
of outside life's obsessions
radio
seeks
to overlay
the immediate world
with its own

we clear that overlay out
to wheeze and toot in peace

back to the game
in fits and starts
description and commentary

we ring our little bells
and bump our gentle drums

Blues Distended - Tom Swafford [from Violin Improvisations]

bow talk

Sinfonia 6 (piano) - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded at The Tintinabulary, Seattle, October 17, 2023]

I was immersed in the Sinfonia project for so long
it is strange now
to be looking back on it

a set of solutions
to a pitch puzzle

Premier Ordre (sol) - La Milordine, Gigue - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

fine dancing
for dancing in finery

Benvenuto Cellini, Act 1: Tableaux 2 - Hector Berlioz - Orchestre National de France, Chorus of Radio France, John Nelson, Gregory Kunde, Patrizia Ciofi, Joyce DiDonato, Laurent Naouri, Jean-François Lapointe, Renaud Delaigue, Eric Salha, Marc Mauillon, Roman Nédélec, Éric Huchet

each detail orchestrated afresh
rhythm rethought anew

the atmosphere
is thick with inscrutable cross-intentions

a French opera
about Italian opera
in the sense
that the music
of this French opera
concerns itself
with the music
of Italian opera

there is no place here
to take a break

very much
a number opera
(made up of individual pieces or numbers)
but the numbers themselves
are remarkable sophisticated compositions

this music borrows
the drama of the words
for its own purposes

Bonita rama de Sauce - Carlos Guastavino - Teresa Berganzo, Juan Antonio Alvarez Parejo

for singing in social clubs
dining dancing drinking
part of the establishment

Sensation Rag - Original Dixieland Jazz Band [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

sheet music publication
and the recording industry
twin poles of the commercial music economy
as it exists today
(sheet music sales fell behind
but were crucial at the beginning)

Traverso - Ernesto Nazareth - Marcelo Bratke

music
obsessed with its style
and national authenticity
keeps its feet in the streets

Don't Speak to Me - Lottie Kimbrough [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

radio-type dialog
as the song begins

concerned
with giving an impression
of a place
that this singer has come to
and inhabits

The Day You Came Along - Coleman Hawkins [from That Devilin' Tune]

slinky and smooth
in a curl of smoke

When The Sun Is Setting On The Prairie - Roy Rogers [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

sentimental
for cowboy days
nostalgia
the gentleman could sure yodel sweet though

Stardust - Roy Eldridge [from That Devilin' Tune]

sophisticated sleaze

My Old Flame - Charlie Parker [from That Devilin' Tune]

devious in its ways
I'm not sure
he ever lets on
what he's really about

Fifth Sonata - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded at The Tintinabulary, Seattle, October 4, 2024]

I made one more recording of this piece a few weeks later
that's about as well as I'll ever play it
this was close
a couple of sloppy moments
and a noisy edit
but other than that quite fine

January 10, 2025

Before You Accuse Me - Bo Diddley [collected from Neal Kosály-Meyer's Bo & The Beat]

not the best line
with which
to open talks
of rapprochement

Cantata for Voice, Voices, and Instruments - Stepan Wolfe - Robert-Schumann-Kammerorchester, Jürgen Kussmaul, Cornelia Kallisch, Lesley Bollinger, Ulrike Kamps-Paulsen, Carola von Schmettow, Helmut Clemens, Hans Christian Ziegler

figures count to four or three
each note
unto itself
no connections allowed
that are not composed into it

negotiating a protocol
between correctness
and musical image
a tense situation

Preface

"Now
heroes
bold
in
leather
breeches
do
leap
o'er
five
barred

to
dare

furious

Oh,

Red Pants Collective + Kin of the Moon
Heather Bentley, Kaley Lane Eaton, Giordana Falzone, James Falzone, Leanna Keith, Hannah Rice
The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

what portends before the song begins...

partly hushed private chats in a public space
attentions
preparing to key into collective experience
soon
the hush presaging

setup is relatively light on electronics
nary a laptop in sight

entrance of the celebrants
a composed event
slowed breathing
twisting the floor
walking from air
moving pillars
leaping to breathlessness

music sings to heal and restore
harass and beguile

leaves as gently as arrives

I have been in a strangely reclusive mood of late
but this was just what I needed and I'm glad we went.
I was especially taken with the permeable boundary
between the movement-artists and the sound-makers
- a remarkable and healing Gesamtkunstwerk.

Argentina - Corina Nolting [from The World Sings Goodnight]

I believe this album
(a cassette tape)
was a gift to our family
at some point back in the 90s
when we had small kids
it was never a favorite

innocuous music is an existential problem

Banned Rehearsal 491 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [April 18, 1998]

assertions are made and quickly discarded
our thoughts wander
the sounds in this session
seem to be reluctant to get into common spaces with their fellow sounds
disinclined
to engage

goes through motions
puts in time
the possibility
that feedback could erupt
provides stakes
a too-easy effect?
aims too low?

the round-robin sessions
were predicated on an assumption
that if one was in the room
one was expected to be making sound
as a social requirement
but
does leaving the space
even
or
especially
if done on a schedule
and re-entering
merely make public
a decision
to not be engaging
in the prescribed manner
for a time
a decision
that doesn't need to be made so theatrically public?
an enforced shaming?
or
a spontaneously arising ritualization
of various transformations among the members
that affect their interactions?
an episode within a work in process

{journal entry of March 21, 2006:

narration by Isaac
lots
of plucked
and strucked
until the organ comes in
low
then carefully glowing
around
certain individual sound spaces

roundrobin session
with characteristic transparence and episodicity
one bad transfer spot
I wonder what that was about}

Intrada - Ryan Hare [from Intrada]

a blatant fanfare
for a blatant time

the extended techniques employed
(singing while playing?)
serve the music
because they are so clearly heard
on the composer's part
and
their sonic manifestations
are so precisely integrated into the pitch world of the piece

December 9, 2024

Banned Rehearsal 732 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [February 4, 2008]

microphone placement
and speaker placement
are determinants of the virtual space
the projected sound is in
(sounds are in)
although
a sensitive ear can tell
that some sound
is being projected from speakers
that sound
is not different
from sounds otherwise produced*
(sound is sound)
they are sounds with peculiarities

*the ear hears them
by the same mechanism
and wetware
the distinction
is entirely in-house
to the listener

we posit histories
for the sounds we hear
and
we fancy
we can determine traces
of that history
within the sound
as well
as though memories of artifacts' histories
(how those sounds got into those speakers)

clarinety feedback
electric guitars
and autoharp
and little bells
and xylophone

Snohomish Mash-Up Piece #1 - Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer, Steve Scribner [from Odds and Ends]

a complexly layered artifactual history
the senses in which
I know what I'm doing
are peripheral to the doing

Patti's Parlour Pieces 17 - 20 - Ken Benshoof - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, February 24, 2018]

careful attention
to the beats between beats

Suyama - Steve Peters [from Chamber Music]

its own virtual chamber of music
an odd little music-dimensioned maze
here is a heart of it

Geistliche Chor-Music, Op. 11, SWV 369-397 (1648), Volume 2: XXVI. Sehet an den Feigenbaum - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

how grandly we slowed
times within times

Deuxieme Ordre (ré): Passepied - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

too enjoyable to think

Barmherziges Herze Der Ewige Liebe, BWV 185 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Ton Koopman

imitation:
ritualized memory
presented as an aesthetic process

finger slap
or extra-resonant sounds
from the organ(?)
not exactly part of the pitch-music
a marker
for a voice within the fabric
this stop just does that

Keyboard Sonata in E-flat Major, Kk. 253 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

runs a prescribed course
this part is for endurance
trial by modulation

December 10, 2024

Symphony in C Major, Wq. 182/3 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - English Consort - Trevor Pinnock

count carefully
we're full of sudden divisions and hold-ups
we form incoming sound
into an expression
we desire to make
with that sound
even
if that desire
was inchoate
until that incoming sound
formed it
or awakened it
from in us

String Quartet in D minor, K. 421 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Budapest Quartet

a common tone
sunk into the depths
by a melody of intervals
by the book cadences
extended by fragmentation and repetition
still signify formal articulations
serve as punctuation

excursus:
in two major-key collections
related to each other by transposition of six semi-tones
the subdominant of one
is the leading tone of the other
and vice-versa
of course
and
they are the two common tones between them
6 semi-tones apart
as can be easily seen
that's why they're common tones

String Quartet in G Major, Op. 54 #1 - Franz Joseph Haydn - Endellion Quartet

always clever
where all the parts come from
figures
sliced out of melody
dissected fancy

in the Haydnesque four-movement format
the first and last movements
are generally in the same key
but
they are different versions of that key
derived by independent means
no two G Majors are made alike

Mass in D Major, Op. 123 "Missa Solemnis" - Ludwig van Beethoven - New Philharmonia Orchestra, Otto Klemperer, Elisabeth Soderstrom, Marga Hoffgen, Waldemar Kmentt, Martti Talvela

whence this material?
it coalesces instantaneously
a blinding flash
it is essential
that each voice
stick to its guns
do NOT glance fetchingly
at any of your fellows
(or you're next)

suddenly
we've still been here
at the blinding flash

Gloria:
(a reasonable reaction)

successive entrances
stacked
create the illusion
of further entrances
within the mass
of those original entrances
as they proceed

psycho-acoustic moil
emerging from everything
and nothing

the soloists
are not soloists
they are parts of a thing happening
with fiery tongues

stern credo-lotry
he means what he says

the voices float upon the Gospel
cyclic recitation
Kierkegaardian repetition
echoes
and echoes
of echoes
of entrances
and entrances
of entrances
it overwhelms utterly

(a truly epic amen)

the harmonics
of wonder and awe

we have moved beyond the world of figures

Frühlingssehnsucht - Franz Schubert - Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, Gerald Moore

tempo change
as though glancing worriedly over ones shoulder

6 Concert Studies on Caprices by Paganini, Op. 10 #6 in E Minor, Sostenuto - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

roll a chord
and the downbeat
is the top of the top

a figuration freak like me

Polonaise in A Major, Op. 40 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Peter Katin

entrance of the grandees
their medals that gleam
and jewels that glitter
pomposity after pomposity

Denk es, O Seele! - Hugo Wolf - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daniel Barenboim

stream-of-consciousness through-composition
away
from Romantic folkish strophes

Etude in F-sharp Major, Op. 42 #4 - Alexander Scriabin - Michael Ponti

gently drifting down to slumber

Suite, Op. 8 - Darius Milhaud - François Choveaux

1
softness upon softness
a gently colored painting
soft trees and gentle waters

2
a wind-up toy dance
steps ex mechanisma

3
a forthright approach
will see us through difficulties

4
dark and murky
as the sun descends
adventure portended
be brave
and stand firm

5
is this dawn we see?
a paler dark
in the East sky
gathering our forces
for struggles ahead
re-waking reluctantly

In a Nutshell #2: Gay but Wistful - Percy Grainger - Percy Grainger [from Percy Grainger plays Percy Grainger]

in the style
of piano pounding for the flicks
no sensibilities will be offended

Confidénces - Ernesto Nazareth - Marcelo Bratke

the somewhat sentimental music of the streets that surrounded modernity

Left Alone Blues - Ishmon Bracy [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

you can smell the dust of the streets in this

Nobody's Sweetheart - Arthur Briggs [from That Devilin' Tune]

to be sung on stage
with a cane and hat and tap shoes

vigorous piano pounding

Mathis Der Maler (Opera): "Mein Bruder, Entreiße Dich Der Höllentiefen Qual" - Laß Mich Im Pfuhle Untergehen - Paul Hindemith - Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin , Leopold Ludwig, Donald Grobe, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

singing dialog in epistolary rhythms
paragraphs traded via song
volume modulates with emotional emphasis

I Cried for You - Billie Holiday (with Benny Goodman and his Orchestra) [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

reversal of fortune
my how her lines float!

Mass - Igor Stravinsky - English Bach Festival Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein, Trinity Boy's Choir, English Bach Festival Chorus, Nicholas Cleobury

stripped down
to follow twisted paths
to articulatory concords
and their clear progeny
intimate statements
of inscribed words
as sung
by the assembled

liberate dissonance
and liberate harmony
and notes and syllables while you're at it

one can listen
to a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass
as a concert piece
or
one can listen
as a believer
how might it benefit us
to make it a conscious choice?
(or both of course)

this faith is timeless
ecstatic
monasterial
learned
practiced

histrionics are irrelevant here

it prays constantly
holy repetitions
a traditional incantation

of course
it is always clear
that this music
is about The Mass
in a peculiarly
meta
manner

Klavierstück IV - Karlheinz Stockhausen - Aloys Kontarsky

maximate dynamic range and precision
it is insistent
that its cultural importance
should be emphasized
vehemently

Music Walk - John Cage - Stephen Drury

isolation
each bit in its box
nobody is in the same room
the strictest observance
of these orders of freedoms
is required
this music
is a strict observance
of the orders
beauty is beside its point

Call On Me - Bobby Bland [a Rescued Record]

the beach blanket bingo moment
the singer is top notch

Who's Making Love - Johnnie Taylor [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

a dance to shake some sense into you

Panic in Detroit - David Bowie [collected from Neal Kosály-Meyer's Bo &  The Beat]

the triumph of production value

Blue Skies - Willie Nelson [from Stardust]

blue skies
for blues guys

Let the Passers By - Jill Borner, Keith Eisenbrey, Dan Sedia [recorded live at Bard College, March 8, 1983]

on target:
guitar (Dan)
and sandblock (me)
and Jill
being brilliant

Need - Mudhoney [from Superfuzz Bigmuff]

power steps
for simple words
bang on the head

Banned Rehearsal 333 - John E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey,  Aaron Keyt [June 25, 1993]

let's all tune to the Funmaker
and be unfair to our elders

the Greek word for sound
was lying on the floor
with the twinkle star

playing with the snare
to make the toddler laugh with amusement

a flimsy and cheap imitation
of what's supposed to be a veil

three quarters of us
have gone to diaper town
Aaron is left
to fend for his self

To Zion (feat. Carlos Santana) - Lauryn Hill [from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill]

gospel testimony
within a reimagined hymn
(one of my favorites too!)

Sounds of the Brush: Improvisation 6 - Gust Burns, Adam Diller, Keith Eisenbrey, Mike Marlin, DL Scott, Adam Weiss [recorded live at Chamber Theater, 4th Floor, Odd Fellows Hall, Seattle]

socially
we wish to participate in the music
that is amenable to our personalities

the success of that music
as an influence within society
is irrelevant
to our desire
to participate in it

dunes - Dorota Czerner [from Open Space 24]

cyclic word ripples
moving through us
moving through

Attitude - Doug Palmer - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded November 4, 2014]

distracted

A Question, A Rose - Benjamin Boretz - Pauline Kim Harris [recorded from a streamed  concert December 4, 2024]

the public space
just organized itself
to attend
to this intimate moment
collective
total
engagement
the grip of musical attention

Banned Telepath 98 Tintinabulary - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 13, 2023]

hoots from Hoonah
ahre ahluded tooah

fascinated with revolutions
of elliptical arithmetics
(genuine fascination:
arising from within the musical activity itself)

there are musicians
who face the public
and there are musicians
who remain private

must be me on piano
working on the problems I was having
with my work in Subvector Colloquy

specifically:
the most congenial way for my playing
to participate
in that environment

we gather in small groups
to share what we are working on
how Methodist is that?

my ear is concerned with the notes I'm playing
even when
it doesn't matter
(how they don't matter
matters)
(they must not matter
in a particular way)
(their manner of mattering
or not
matters)

can music withdraw into its own thoughts?
the various bells and gongs
arranged around the Kingsbury
are necessary acolytes to it

Benvenuto Cellini, Act I, Scene 2 - Hector Berlioz - Orchestre National de France, Chorus of Radio France, John Nelson, Gregory Kunde, Patrizia Ciofi, Joyce DiDonato, Laurent Naouri, Jean-François Lapointe, Renaud Delaigue, Eric Salha, Marc Mauillon, Roman Nédélec, Éric Huchet

the person of this
is uncomforably close

in Wagner
the whole of the drama
is present to any moment
in this
any moment
is all the drama it could be

(a musician's composer)

Preludes, Book 2 #5: "Bruyer" - Claude Debussy - Paul Jacobs

brushstrokes

Everybody's Crazy About the Doggone Blues But I'm Happy - Wilbur Sweatman [from That Devilin' Tune]

this song
is a three-ring circus clown car parade

Mr. Crow and Mrs. Wren Go For a  Walk - Ruth Crawford Seeger - Jenny Lin

frivolous but sharp

Die Dreigroschenopr (beginning) - Kurt Weill - Sender Freies Berlin Orchestra, Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg

the ungrand opera

this music holds us
and itself
in utter contempt

the gig pays
in meta-coin

(you'll never get the irony out of the carpet)

more than halfway to Partch

(8mm
3-penny
musical)

proverbs and commentary

Western Cowboy Huddle - Leadbelly [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

each verse ends
in a multisyllabic nonsense cadence
each verse
has four lines
and three parts
accelerating
to the aforementioned cadence

(cattle calling)

Passionette - Willie The Lion Smith [from That Devilin' Tune]

fractured measure
(after-balance)(?)
balancing measure
free within the time grid

Study No. 11 (mid 1930's) - Charles Ives - Charles Ives [from Charles Ives plays Charles Ives]

composes like a painter

We Will Know - Roy Lanham and his Gospel Quartet [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

music shapes itself to its stage
(radio being the stage)

Invocation and Dance - Paul Creston - Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz

like a film of an historic ballet score
not quite the real thing

keeping the fires of early modernism alive
for film fans everywhere

a touch of Igor
a dash of Maurice
cleansed of offense
all your favorite bits
from the old icons
(back when Le Sacre
was unfashionably weird)

wants visuals to complete it

for when there isn't time
for real Spring

In Session at The Tintinabulary

Barby - Keith Eisenbrey

December 9, 2024

Detritus 3 - Keith Eisenbrey

Gradus 406 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

polypticules tickle

it has become traditional
to leave long gaps of doing nothing
great heaps
of undigested Cagean silence
for ceremony's sake

acquisition
and use
of assets
tokens
for combination
