Prospect Recital Series
Mary Riles, cello; Peter Nelson-King, piano
Prospect Congregational United Church of Christ, Seattle

Selections from 12 Album Leaves, Op. 51 - Reinhold Glière

balanced
ostentatiously civilized
robust sonority
francophilic harmonic rhythm

4 Stücke, Op. 24 - Luise Adolpha Le Beau

an extended song
Schumannesque rather than Lisztian or Wagnerian
but perhaps Mendelssohn would be a more accurate touchstone
correctness and taste

3 Pieces - Nadia Boulanger

elegant lines
unwasted
means what it says

Lament - James Simon

not locked into fours
solidly heard

October Twilight - Henry Kimball Hadley

swelling but staid
set apart

Variations for Cello and Piano - Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

I was turning pages for this
so I took no notes
my impression
was that it would sit comfortably
in the virtuoso concert repertoire
of the late 19th Century

a concert of music
that has
to some several extents
been left behind
as it were
from our collective awareness

whatever my personal favorites may have been among them
(Boulanger & Simon)
one could regard this selection
as providing a glimpse
into our past's cultures
with the hope
of expanding our concept
of what was going on
while
what we think of
as having been going on
was going on
not an unworthy goal

An Emotional History of the Western United States
Volume 1: Maverick Granddaughter - Kaley Lane Eaton, music and poetry;
The Idea of West - Tom Baker, music; Lara Candland, poetry
The Plectrum Five; Strange Interlude
The Wyncote North West Forum, Town Hall, Seattle

Kaley
as is her usual
assembled a superb bunch of musicians for this concert of poetry set to music.

The general topic of the poetry
(and Tom's portion fit in easily)
was the experience of that internal migration to the West
in the latter decades of the 19th Century.

For both Kaley and Tom
those experiences
are part of their own family histories
which lifts the whole out of the merely academic.

For the most part
the instruments being played
might believably have been stowed on a covered wagon
(less sure about the grand piano, the harp, and the larger strings)
and the music itself
would have rarely outpaced
that brace of oxen
we hear tell of in the words.

And
I suppose
if I kept hoping for the music to take over
to wrest attention from the poetical topic
and incandesce in its own right
then that is just my problem.
Not to say I didn't enjoy the evening.
I did.
But
it raises questions in my own head
about what I need
from music
that might not be served
by a music
that seems to
so unironically
serve a verbally explicable topic.
Again - my problem.

Zither Film 26 - Keith Eisenbrey [November 15, 2008]

any hint of regularity
is occasion to construct a metrical framework

if such hints absent themselves
sound bits vacate their common space

is such a metrical framework/space
a linguistic mode also?
do they spring from a common mental complex?
where poetry music and dance join?

any soundbit
could be understood as
or be translated into
a phoneme
or a motion
each occupies and defines
a moment
each
is an event
in that sense
a syllabic phoneme
within a song
is a qualia among qualias exhibited within an event
such an event
would be a polyvalently qualified event
and a song
as such
might be an artifact of
or contain a set of
such
polyvalently qualified events

dance complicates things further

as would any other modality of event qualia

an event might be a pitched phoneme
or a phonemed pitch
depending on ones path of inquiry

song works
because it occurs
at such a basic level of our experience of the world
far more basic than linguistic reference
or musical contextuality?

Through/Spectrum 1 - Andrew Young [from Inkplaces]

two ways to think of pitch
up/down (a spectrum)
or cyclic (rational/acoustic)

Oak Harbor 180807 - Keith Eisenbrey [August 7, 2018]

I was up on Whidbey Island with my brother
a month after my dad passed away
and we were working on finding a place
for my mom to stay

Glen took the opportunity
of being out and about
to take his car
through a car wash
which sound
I recorded
when we were done
I told him
that
he could come on out
from under the seat

Song for George - The No Ones [from My Best Evil Friends]

our theories of linguistic modalities
and our theories of musical modalities
affect
our analyses
of what phonemes are doing
as pitches
and what pitches are doing
as phonemes
but
might there be another
combined
modality possible?
a modality of pitch-phoneme motion?

in as many ways as I could devise
on a specific reordering

Banned Rehearsal 964 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Neal Kosály-Meyer [August 13, 2018]

if I ask myself
what musical purpose might be served
by regarding environmental sound
as music
in whole
or as a part
I must first decide
what I mean
by
a musical purpose
insofar as
it pertains
to the question at hand

they probably resolve
to the same question
in that
the answer to the latter
would determine the answer to the former

if I propound
that a musical purpose
is that sound's efficiency
in social intercourse
between me
and it
the flow of its communicative content
then
it seems to me
that environmental sounds
are relatively impersonal
relatively undirected
diffuse
in comparison
to the pluck of a ukulele string
or other sound
seeming to have been made
as the direct result
of an intention

recording technology muddies the waters
since a played back sound
whatever its origin prior to recording
is played back
with a direct intention
of making sound
and becomes
to that extent
indistinguishable

however
earmind
is remarkably adept
at distinguishing sounds
as evidence of objects in a field
we don't even need to try
and I can distinguish
in this playback
for instance
the sounds of traffic
and those of zither
and though the traffic sound certainly participates acoustically
with the zither sound
the zither sound
is clearly adjusting its doing
to the traffic's
but not vice versa

music is sound with a face?
(that would include language)

someone had a firework left over
different than traffic?
closer to music
as typically understood?

of course environmental sounds
have been part of our experience of music always
it is the part we accept as being without intent

the collective silence preceding a typical concert performance
or any such collective silence modelling itself on that practice
a signifier of attention getting
on the same page
all aboard!
same train
same route
multiple experiences

is the purpose of limiting the pitch material
to open to the ears
the variety and subtlety of sound itself
or
is it to expose the underlying poverty of pitch?
its sensual evasiveness?
or
does pitch win
even with 84 hands tied behind its back?
the roil within the sonorities
is largely the play of the pitch's partials
which
are
pitches
even sensuality is pitch-based

Leanna Keith: So Long And Thanks For All The Fish
Greg Campbell, Kaley Lane Eaton, Ray Larsen, Christian Pincock, Bonnie Whiting
Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

Unfortunately Leanna couldn't be with us this evening, but a fine crew soldiered on for the benefit of their moving expenses as they adventure toward a doctorate. We all wish them well and earnestly hope for a speedy return if that is in our cards.

rhythm urges burst immediately
wander among uke and drums
Neal restrings an electric guitar with the volume up
I observe from my organ loft
calmly

keeping it lively
with slow heavy tones

now
can be quite an extensive bubble of awareness
but
when we turn our attention
to attempt to look directly
at now
it
eludes us
we can't observe it directly
so
it might not exist
but
there it is
all the time
and everywhere

that sound cost seventy five cents
a comparison is made
to a sound that cost a dollar

what is meant
by free
in free improvisation
(without cost)

there erupted a high scream
there's the banjo
so
I've had it at least since then

no pickles
no mustard
no sesame seeds
no bacon no cheese

to a wandering piano chorale
and so
down to the shore
seabirds squawk
in the electric guitar rigging

the feedback spotlight
blares triumphantly

Madrigals, Book VIII: Hor che 'l ciel e la terra - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

reading the poem
as a literalized dialog
the literalization
of a poetic image (dialog)
is unnecessary
but that it allows opportunity
to embody the characters of the voices
in a separate polyphonic space
flesh them out
distinguish the voices and the vocalists
(separately parseable)

Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren, BuxWV 214 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

Alley Rat - Jimmy Blythe [from Really The Blues]

Alcotts - Charles Ives - Charles Ives [from Charles Ives Plays Charles Ives]

more care taken for this one
it would be an interesting speculative period-instrument experiment
to perform this
on a little square piano
such as may easily have been
in many a parlor
at the time of this composition

if
that isn't
what's going on here

it may just be the recording
but that piano
(though quite nice)
is not a grand
or so I would guess

Something You Got - Chris Kenner [from Land of 1000 Dances]

I like the sound of this recording
the sounds sound like they're in the same room
they mesh

Old Friends (Bookends Theme) - Simon & Garfunkel [from Bookends]

at the end of side one of the album

a side

the intelligentsia
could find an easy sophistication
goes all symphonic and all

we'll let some lounge-y sonorities hang in the air

we roll our own

Metaphors On The Move!

maudlin as all get out
Weepy Clown
begging the skies

proceed to collapse
do not pass go
do not collect two hundred dollars

shake the bars
silver screen narrative
music holding a thread in your face
immediate repetition
a gambit for awareness
bubble extension

I don't remember this session at all
I wonder why I was feeling such grandiose gestures?
angry at work perhaps
that would be about when I'd had enough
of being an abstractor

we take a break
to start over
differently configured
among the instruments

such dramatic psalmody

another long pause
into a strange land
of tape wobbles
and shimmery cymbals

I have no idea how we made that sound
it may have involved the reel to reel
in our play time

and now
the piano is back
with a lullaby
being poked by the sprite

a drum machine
has been birthed
without intent

the piano plays in tenths

root with added sixth

a session of episodes

triumphalist life advice

Banned Rehearsal 507 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [September 12, 1998]

we wash colors into the space
to hear it shining
bells on the vast walls

142 ended with me on drums (pretty sure)
and ten years later
there I am
on drums again (pretty sure)

as to piano and organ
I am at a loss
and I'm only guessing
Neal on guitar

we press toward loudness assertion
apparent personnel
may have changed instruments
in the melee

it isn't always pretty
we scrabble
and march forward
come what may

we work the canvas vigorously
we ring the bell
to mark our leaving of this space

Chapel Event - Sheri Brown, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer, Lin Lucas [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, September 4, 2008]

audients take their seats individually
the camera is still
the stage is only partially visible
our viewpoint is behind and to the right
we were noticeably younger back then

pre-eventual pacing and seating adjustments

each audient
is there for their own reasons
as are each of the performers
I am pacing
the doors are shut
(sound)
the lights dim

Wake begins
the audients are dematerialized into fuzzy specters
the camcorder struggles with the dimness
struggles to find a focus
which throbs irregularly from near to far

Sheri
a bright splotch
indifferently defined

priestlike
I hurl the ping pong balls
from the red bucket
and retire

anyone's eventual perception
is limited
partial

Sheri has a long pole
from behind the pillar
holds it aloft
then balanced upon their skull
Lin appears
I begin to recite
garbed ceremonial
poles are crossed
I lecture myself
the stage
is peopled
gas masks
in honor of the anthem

Neal fortissimos
in octaves of As
As
in fortissimos of octaves
octaves
in As of fortissimos

a bright hand emerges
through the spaces
between the heads
of audients

a dancer
is a body
that draws attention
a bodily avatar
of
our sense of body
occluded
by our own
and others
bodies

retains focus
by
its own disciplined focus

ghostlike forms appear
and dis-

gnomic spirits
enraptured
knight of a pale order

the unsettled focus
moves the figures of the audients
the space itself
is quivered

the sound of the camcorder's focus mechanism
a quiet tick tick

forms are guesswork
and then
Neal alone with his A

focus narrowed
near to vanishing

hallucinatory figures
wraiths
materialized
transcession
to center stage
light returns
as As fade

gestures are mimed
ite missa est

immolation by applause
to clear the focus
thank you for coming
the ping pong balls
are collected
collectively
the camcorder
is put out

Walla Walla

Gradus 419 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

we will hear a plethoric value of pitches
we specialize here
in sonorities
that call intonation into question

thought threads
spun upon commonalities
among moments
and discommonalities
among the same figures

play
upon the variable values
of the durations
of now
as
they pass through the figures

a figure
differs from a filter
in that
a figure
particularizes
and a filter
departicularizes

figures deepen abstraction
filters sand it smooth

commonalities assist us
in keeping our place
or
in mapping our position
reassurance
desperate measures

the pages are loosely rumpled
an alternative compositional approach
might be
to maximize discommonalities
in the immediate awareness bubble
that
any latent properties of the rung's combinations
would make themselves apparent
as though
from raw data

threading through commonalities
is a mode of compositional thinking
but not the only such mode

the written score*
is a geography to be explored

*Neal
when necessitated by the plethora of pitches involved
produces written out scores
(graphically structured representations
of the rung's pitches in pitch space)
which
he then explores
by searching paths
within that specific geography
(perhaps geomorphology)
(or pitch space morphology)
(better terms?)
locations
(pitch sets)
cross-referenced
by their constituent pitches
and/or pitch classes

Music of Benjamin Boretz
Keith Eisenbrey, piano

The music of Benjamin Boretz, which I first encountered as an undergraduate, has played a central role in my own sense of musical possibility and depth ever since. I was deeply fortunate to study with him for a few years in the early 80s, and have been blessed with his ongoing friendship and conversation since that time. It is my distinct pleasure to share these recordings with you now.

Preface

"Now
heroes
bold
in
leather
breeches
do
leap
o'er
five
barred
gates
and
ditches
the
perils
of
the
field
to
dare
and
hunt
that
furious
beast
the
hare!
Oh,
courage
rare!"

Red Pants Collective + Kin of the Moon
Heather Bentley, Kaley Lane Eaton, Giordana Falzone, James Falzone, Leanna Keith, Hannah Rice
The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

what portends before the song begins...

partly hushed private chats in a public space
attentions
preparing to key into collective experience
soon
the hush presaging

setup is relatively light on electronics
nary a laptop in sight

entrance of the celebrants
a composed event
slowed breathing
twisting the floor
walking from air
moving pillars
leaping to breathlessness

music sings to heal and restore
harass and beguile

leaves as gently as arrives

I have been in a strangely reclusive mood of late
but this was just what I needed and I'm glad we went.
I was especially taken with the permeable boundary
between the movement-artists and the sound-makers
- a remarkable and healing Gesamtkunstwerk.

Recorded

December 8, 2024

Argentina - Corina Nolting [from The World Sings Goodnight]

I believe this album
(a cassette tape)
was a gift to our family
at some point back in the 90s
when we had small kids
it was never a favorite

innocuous music is an existential problem

Banned Rehearsal 491 - Isaac E, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [April 18, 1998]

assertions are made and quickly discarded
our thoughts wander
the sounds in this session
seem to be reluctant to get into common spaces with their fellow sounds
disinclined
to engage

goes through motions
puts in time
the possibility
that feedback could erupt
provides stakes
a too-easy effect?
aims too low?

the round-robin sessions
were predicated on an assumption
that if one was in the room
one was expected to be making sound
as a social requirement
but
does leaving the space
even
or
especially
if done on a schedule
and re-entering
merely make public
a decision
to not be engaging
in the prescribed manner
for a time
a decision
that doesn't need to be made so theatrically public?
an enforced shaming?
or
a spontaneously arising ritualization
of various transformations among the members
that affect their interactions?
an episode within a work in process

{journal entry of March 21, 2006:

narration by Isaac
lots
of plucked
and strucked
until the organ comes in
low
then carefully glowing
around
certain individual sound spaces

roundrobin session
with characteristic transparence and episodicity
one bad transfer spot
I wonder what that was about}

Intrada - Ryan Hare [from Intrada]

a blatant fanfare
for a blatant time

the extended techniques employed
(singing while playing?)
serve the music
because they are so clearly heard
on the composer's part
and
their sonic manifestations
are so precisely integrated into the pitch world of the piece

December 9, 2024

Banned Rehearsal 732 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [February 4, 2008]

microphone placement
and speaker placement
are determinants of the virtual space
the projected sound is in
(sounds are in)
although
a sensitive ear can tell
that some sound
is being projected from speakers
that sound
is not different
from sounds otherwise produced*
(sound is sound)
they are sounds with peculiarities

*the ear hears them
by the same mechanism
and wetware
the distinction
is entirely in-house
to the listener

we posit histories
for the sounds we hear
and
we fancy
we can determine traces
of that history
within the sound
as well
as though memories of artifacts' histories
(how those sounds got into those speakers)

clarinety feedback
electric guitars
and autoharp
and little bells
and xylophone

Snohomish Mash-Up Piece #1 - Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer, Steve Scribner [from Odds and Ends]

a complexly layered artifactual history
the senses in which
I know what I'm doing
are peripheral to the doing

Patti's Parlour Pieces 17 - 20 - Ken Benshoof - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, February 24, 2018]

careful attention
to the beats between beats

Suyama - Steve Peters [from Chamber Music]

its own virtual chamber of music
an odd little music-dimensioned maze
here is a heart of it

Geistliche Chor-Music, Op. 11, SWV 369-397 (1648), Volume 2: XXVI. Sehet an den Feigenbaum - Heinrich Schütz - Capella Augustana

how grandly we slowed
times within times

Deuxieme Ordre (ré): Passepied - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

too enjoyable to think

Barmherziges Herze Der Ewige Liebe, BWV 185 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Ton Koopman

imitation:
ritualized memory
presented as an aesthetic process

finger slap
or extra-resonant sounds
from the organ(?)
not exactly part of the pitch-music
a marker
for a voice within the fabric
this stop just does that

Keyboard Sonata in E-flat Major, Kk. 253 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

runs a prescribed course
this part is for endurance
trial by modulation

December 10, 2024

Symphony in C Major, Wq. 182/3 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - English Consort - Trevor Pinnock

count carefully
we're full of sudden divisions and hold-ups
we form incoming sound
into an expression
we desire to make
with that sound
even
if that desire
was inchoate
until that incoming sound
formed it
or awakened it
from in us

String Quartet in D minor, K. 421 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Budapest Quartet

a common tone
sunk into the depths
by a melody of intervals
by the book cadences
extended by fragmentation and repetition
still signify formal articulations
serve as punctuation

excursus:
in two major-key collections
related to each other by transposition of six semi-tones
the subdominant of one
is the leading tone of the other
and vice-versa
of course
and
they are the two common tones between them
6 semi-tones apart
as can be easily seen
that's why they're common tones

String Quartet in G Major, Op. 54 #1 - Franz Joseph Haydn - Endellion Quartet

always clever
where all the parts come from
figures
sliced out of melody
dissected fancy

in the Haydnesque four-movement format
the first and last movements
are generally in the same key
but
they are different versions of that key
derived by independent means
no two G Majors are made alike

Mass in D Major, Op. 123 "Missa Solemnis" - Ludwig van Beethoven - New Philharmonia Orchestra, Otto Klemperer, Elisabeth Soderstrom, Marga Hoffgen, Waldemar Kmentt, Martti Talvela

whence this material?
it coalesces instantaneously
a blinding flash
it is essential
that each voice
stick to its guns
do NOT glance fetchingly
at any of your fellows
(or you're next)

suddenly
we've still been here
at the blinding flash

Gloria:
(a reasonable reaction)

successive entrances
stacked
create the illusion
of further entrances
within the mass
of those original entrances
as they proceed

psycho-acoustic moil
emerging from everything
and nothing

the soloists
are not soloists
they are parts of a thing happening
with fiery tongues

stern credo-lotry
he means what he says

the voices float upon the Gospel
cyclic recitation
Kierkegaardian repetition
echoes
and echoes
of echoes
of entrances
and entrances
of entrances
it overwhelms utterly

(a truly epic amen)

the harmonics
of wonder and awe

we have moved beyond the world of figures

Frühlingssehnsucht - Franz Schubert - Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, Gerald Moore

tempo change
as though glancing worriedly over ones shoulder

6 Concert Studies on Caprices by Paganini, Op. 10 #6 in E Minor, Sostenuto - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

roll a chord
and the downbeat
is the top of the top

a figuration freak like me

Polonaise in A Major, Op. 40 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Peter Katin

entrance of the grandees
their medals that gleam
and jewels that glitter
pomposity after pomposity

December 11, 2024

Denk es, O Seele! - Hugo Wolf - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daniel Barenboim

toward
stream-of-consciousness through-composition
away
from Romantic folkish strophes

Etude in F-sharp Major, Op. 42 #4 - Alexander Scriabin - Michael Ponti

gently drifting down to slumber

Suite, Op. 8 - Darius Milhaud - François Choveaux

1
softness upon softness
a gently colored painting
soft trees and gentle waters

2
a wind-up toy dance
steps ex mechanisma

3
a forthright approach
will see us through difficulties

4
dark and murky
as the sun descends
adventure portended
be brave
and stand firm

5
is this dawn we see?
a paler dark
in the East sky
gathering our forces
for struggles ahead
re-waking reluctantly

In a Nutshell #2: Gay but Wistful - Percy Grainger - Percy Grainger [from Percy Grainger plays Percy Grainger]

in the style
of piano pounding for the flicks
no sensibilities will be offended

Confidénces - Ernesto Nazareth - Marcelo Bratke

the somewhat sentimental music of the streets that surrounded modernity

Left Alone Blues - Ishmon Bracy [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

you can smell the dust of the streets in this

Nobody's Sweetheart - Arthur Briggs [from That Devilin' Tune]

to be sung on stage
with a cane and hat and tap shoes

vigorous piano pounding

Mathis Der Maler (Opera): "Mein Bruder, Entreiße Dich Der Höllentiefen Qual" - Laß Mich Im Pfuhle Untergehen - Paul Hindemith - Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin , Leopold Ludwig, Donald Grobe, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

singing dialog in epistolary rhythms
paragraphs traded via song
volume modulates with emotional emphasis

I Cried for You - Billie Holiday (with Benny Goodman and his Orchestra) [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

reversal of fortune
my how her lines float!

Mass - Igor Stravinsky - English Bach Festival Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein, Trinity Boy's Choir, English Bach Festival Chorus, Nicholas Cleobury

stripped down
to follow twisted paths
to articulatory concords
and their clear progeny
intimate statements
of inscribed words
as sung
by the assembled

liberate dissonance
and liberate harmony
and notes and syllables while you're at it

one can listen
to a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass
as a concert piece
or
one can listen
as a believer
how might it benefit us
to make it a conscious choice?
(or both of course)

this faith is timeless
ecstatic
monasterial
learned
practiced

histrionics are irrelevant here

it prays constantly
holy repetitions
a traditional incantation

of course
it is always clear
that this music
is about The Mass
in a peculiarly
meta
manner

the success of that music

moving through

Attitude - Doug Palmer - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded November 4, 2014]

Banned Telepath 98 Tintinabulary - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [March 13, 2023]

hoots from Hoonah

fascinated with revolutions
of elliptical arithmetics
(genuine fascination:
arising from within the musical activity itself)

there are musicians
who face the public
and there are musicians
who remain private

with my work in Subvector Colloquy

specifically:
the most congenial way for my playing
to participate
in that environment

we gather in small groups
to share what we are working on
how Methodist is that?

my ear is concerned with the notes I'm playing
even when
it doesn't matter
(how they don't matter
matters)
(they must not matter
in a particular way)
(their manner of mattering
or not
matters)

can music withdraw into its own thoughts?
the various bells and gongs
arranged around the Kingsbury
are necessary acolytes to it

Benvenuto Cellini, Act I, Scene 2 - Hector Berlioz - Orchestre National de France, Chorus of Radio France, John Nelson, Gregory Kunde, Patrizia Ciofi, Joyce DiDonato, Laurent Naouri, Jean-François Lapointe, Renaud Delaigue, Eric Salha, Marc Mauillon, Roman Nédélec, Éric Huchet
