Preface

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
"I now thought our troubles would soon be over; mine were very nearly so in one sense at least; for after Mrs. Coxe, and Jemimarann, and Tug, and the maid, and valet, and valuables had been handed across it came to my turn. I had ofter heard of people being taken up by a plank, but seldom of their being set down by one. Just as I was going over, the vessel rode off a little, the board slipped, and down I soused into the water. You might have heard Mrs. Coxe's shriek as far as Gravesend; it rung in my ears as I went down, all grieved at the thought of leaving her a disconsolate widder. Well, up I came again, and caught the brim of my beaver hat - though I have heard that drowning men catch at straws: - I floated, and hoped to escape by hook or by crook; and luckily, just then I felt myself suddenly jerked by the waistband of my whites, and found myself hauled up in air at the end of a boathook, to the sound of "yeho! yehe! yehoi!" and so I was dragged aboard. I was put to bed, and had swallowed so much water that it took a very considerable quantity of brandy to bring it to a proper mixture in my inside; in fact, for some I hours I was in a very deplorable state."

reclaiming free heterophony

Cuong Vu, with Greg Sinibaldi

Shanti/Ashtangi - Madonna [from Ray of Light]

we'll be futuristically primitive
I've got just the costume

JB - Keith Eisenbrey [from Summer Songs/Winter Mix]

epistolary
working hard
at messing up any sound I couldn't polish
which is all of them

Paparazzi - Lady Gaga [from The Fame]

celebrity
selling celebritous fantasies
across the land

Conquer The World With You - Smokestack and The Foothill Fury [from Lone Buffalo]

wake up call
time to get doing

Go - Whitney Ballen [from You're a Shooting Star - I'm a Sinking Ship]

Madrigals, Book IX: Sì, sì, ch'io v'amo - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

the words dance from the singer's tongue

the notion of pitch-class
is a mode of thinking
in terms of the registral cyclicity
of pitch space

Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt, BuxWV 183 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

one could conceptualize pitch space
as a registral continuum
made of pitches
related by position

then
one could add upon that
the terrain of intervals
forming acoustic nodes
as they pulse
across the registral continuum
of pitch space

then
one could add upon that
the cross-registral cyclicity
of pitch-class space
abstractly conceptualizing
the network of intervals
forming acoustic nodes
across the registral continuum

and
then what?
syntaxes thereof?

Laßt uns Sorgen, laßt uns Wachen, BWV 213 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Choir, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Ton Koopman

these words float
on dancing notes

if a figure seems to sing
we imagine a person of that figure

Bach keeps his imaginary persons straight

(nein echoes)
(not nine echoes)
(not necessarily)
[Ja ja! echoes]
[Ja Ja]
||:Ja:||

there goes that happy couple
ich küsse dich
over and over
their phonemic parts of speech
phase through each other's gender

Sonata in B-flat Major, Kk. 310 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

the count of tonal corners this music turns
daunts

we are in the deepest cellars of B-flat now
I reckon

worry not
we'll head back upstairs now

Kinderszene: Ritter von Steckenpferd, Op. 15 #9 - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

a picture book picture

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park

Buch der Lieder I: Angiolin, S531/6 - Franz Liszt - Alexandre Dossin

as the imagined melody
and the imagined lute
inform each other
the song expands
to fill its swelling heart

2 Morceaux: Désir, Op. 57 #1 - Alexander Scriabin - John Ogdon

a sketch in quick pencil

Two Deuces - Louis Armstrong's Hot Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

tempo shifts
sudden skitters

A Fool For You - Ray Charles [from Ray Charles Live at Newport]

each line
has a center of thrust
that must be pushed
or rolled
through
or over

the centers
of thrust
cycle heavily
but
their continuity
gets complicated
as the song moves into further verses

Chants Sacres - Henri Pousseur - Philadelphia Composer's Forum, Joel Thome, Valarie Lamoree, Eric Rosenblith, Jacob Glick, Michael Rudiakov

quasi Webernesque directness
and lovely too

Blue Differentials - Sun Ra [from Monorails & Satellites]

the cogworks
patched together

Corazón  - Carole King [from Fantasy]

exoticistic
primitivistic
but can't stick with it quite

It's Hard To Be a Saint in the City - Bruce Springsteen [from Live at the Roxy]

street mouth
spits words

40 - U2 [from Under a Blood Red Sky]

a hymn with chorus

Banned Rehearsal 163 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [December 20, 1988]

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
in an intricately designed polyphonic passage
we participate in that design
as though we were among the parts
each voice
is a person
and our attention
traces a path
through that design
which path
is also a voice
and also a person

this
is not an intricately designed polyphonic passage
though multiple voices are clearly present
the difference is
that it is discovering its paths
as it goes
and
we join in that discovering
as a listening
participatory voice

Cold Mountain Songs: Piano Interlude - Robert Morris - Margaret Kampmeier [from Open Space 30]

vehement words are spoken

How Many Times - Aretha Franklin [from A Rose Is Still A Rose]

commiseration pill
apparent social purpose

but the moneyed sound
is alienating

why can't I be more glamorously miserable?

I Want Some Sugar In My Bowl - Karin Blaine [from Dirty Money]

time for some clever rhymes
and even some scat
where an instrument would have soloed

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Gradus 150 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [December 29, 2008]

registers can move from place to place
jacked into the dynamic trunk line

as I recollect
and I may be wrong
but I think I was using a small stereo mic
and aiming it at the wall
point blank
to mimic my PZMs
and de-emphasize the right/left up/down skew
of keyboard sound
as metaphorically conceived

these are all A-naturals
since he said so

but
that fact
vanishes in the experience
is not a part of it

to name a pitch class
is to reify
a set of experience nodes
as being referential

Gonna See John Salvatier- Swingset Showdown [from Cymbal of Appreciation]

a bit of sophomoric patter song energy

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Maple Leaf 181110 - Keith Eisenbrey [November 10, 2018]

a few minutes of squawks and screeches in the yard

fowl language
deafened partially

Soundscroll V, Part 2: Tranquil Landscape - S. Eric Scribner [from Hexaphonic]

Devil's Gonna Get You - Bessie Smith [from Empty Bed Blues]

long long lane
with no turnin'
flame
that keeps on burnin'

give up now dude
the way you're going on

sure as you're born to die

Do I Love You? - Judy Garland [from Judy In Love]

we can see the nightclub uniforms
and matching stands

she shapes her vowels with her hands

and the quiver of her spine

3 Olden Style Pieces: I - Henryk Górecki - Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Zofia Kilanowicz, Antoni Wit

heart on sleeve
and little else

brother to Hovhaness
nostalgic for a lost homeland

Turn Out The Stars - Bill Evans [from Some Other Time / The Lost Session from the Black Forest]

the difficulty
with that half step in particular

if we remember it
in each passing chord
that moves to the next

is recollection remembrance?
now where were we?

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
He's Misstra Know-It-All - Stevie Wonder [from Innervisions]

rewriting Mr. Nobody
for the Grifter era

Train In The Distance - Paul Simon [from Hearts and Bones]

the sound of greener pastures
everybody thinks its true
into our hearts and our brains

She Loves You - The Beatles [from Past Masters Volume 1]

high school drama rumors
don't be stupid fellow
the chum's advice

March from The Love for Three Oranges - Empire Brass Quintet [from Class Brass On The Edge]

quite amusing
but full of filler

I'm On Your Side - Bonnie Raitt [from Fundamental]

no tone exists at its inception
but only in the process of its duration

Livin' Road - Keith Eisenbrey [from Summer Songs/Winter Mix]

one song piled on another
one song pulled through another

trying on a persona for sizes

Talking to Myself - Red Ribbon [from Dark Party]

yodel register crossing

Banned Rehearsal 1084 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [September 25, 2023]

listening for how the room accepts its sounds

When I Woke Up This Morning She Was Gone - Jim Jackson [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

Willow The Wasp - Norman Monath [from Songs of the Pogo]

wasps with wondrous wives
lyrical nonsense rhymes

From This Moment On - Ella Fitzgerald [from Love Songs: the Best of the Verve Songbook]

Etcetera - Wayne Shorter [from The Classic Blue Note Recordings]

tempo on a rough road
ruts and rocks

All in All - Morgana King [from New Beginnings]

sparkly evening romance
yikes where'd the choir come from?

end of show send 'em out song
with modulations
and guitar shred break
shark jumping
can't be far off

Madison Avenue - T-Bone Burnett [from Truth Decay]

in demo clothes
highly moral in character

Banned Rehearsal 164 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [December 23, 1988]

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
this is a small room
crowded with sounds
expertise is no guarantee
bam bam
short cut
motor rhythm
linked
to body feedback
what feels good to do
must be good to hear
(?)

we find a low and rumbly sound
swathes of register
all in a sweep of zither strings

toy reed organ
in a simulacrum of unanimity
with the big boy piano

a singing
the pulsers get all excited
about finding a groove
but back off

tribal vibe
lifts into incandescence
leaves room for any hosh p'kosh

Christmas Eve Eve
a voluntary
on the near nativity

spirited
anthemic
with descant extempore

we cadence and regroup
play childish
and hope for the best

almonds and nectarines

Volte - Michael Praetorius - The Baltimore Consort [from Le Rocque 'N' Roll]

written down music

for what did this survive?

Track 7 - Students of Joan Schoepflin [June 9, 1998]

every piece
includes its program
as announced
to teach stage presence and poise

A Woman Like Me - Bettye Lavette [from A Woman Like Me]

a literature of complaint
and accusation
and exploration

Closer - Vince Mira [from The Cash Cabin Sessions]

campfire strum tempo
cowboy sincere

Second Thoughts - Jesse Canterbury, Greg Sinibaldi [from Ascendant]

reeds imitate a bell's resonance
and move from within that space

mostly short

de rigueur long pauses

the fact of it
in action
is ceaselessly intimate and personal

Leanna Keith: So Long And Thanks For All The Fish
Greg Campbell, Kaley Lane Eaton, Ray Larsen, Christian Pincock, Bonnie Whiting
Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

Unfortunately Leanna couldn't be with us this evening, but a fine crew soldiered on for the benefit of their moving expenses as they adventure toward a doctorate. We all wish them well and earnestly hope for a speedy return if that is in our cards.

we jump in the pool together
gastromanciful drum buzzer
we are moving gently
by inertial drift
our surroundings
also
but independently
without conflict or friction

an uprising
hydrothermal event imminence

a memorial sequence

respecters of spotlit solos
temporary hierarchies
(provisional) (ad hoc)

homing in
target located
dogged pursuit
scrabbling and clawing

tooling down the road
easy traveling

in celebration of the fourth Bannediversary
some Amontillado
we are now ready to toast
cheers
hm hm hm

getting even with the louds
who lived next door
by being quiet

the funmaker glows into life
brightly blaring
full force room fill

a quiet sequence of piano sounds
fits of energy
occasional focus

too languid to gel much

we take a tour through the music room

Esta Noche Serena - Black Cat Orchestra [from Dante's Inferno Live Score]

I'm guessing this show
is a tour through Hellville
and not a transformation of the entire book
top to bottom

Banned Rehearsal 506 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [September 5, 1998]

Jasper Mountain Reserve
rhythm urges burst immediately
wander among uke and drums
Neal restrings an electric guitar with the volume up
I observe from my organ loft
calmly

keeping it lively
with slow heavy tones

now
can be quite an extensive bubble of awareness
but
when we turn our attention
to attempt to look directly
at now
it
eludes us
we can't observe it directly
so
it might not exist
but
there it is
all the time
and everywhere

that sound cost seventy five cents
a comparison is made
to a sound that cost a dollar

what is meant
by free
in free improvisation
(without cost)

there erupted a high scream
there's the banjo
so
I've had it at least since then

no pickles
no mustard
no sesame seeds
no bacon no cheese

to a wandering piano chorale
and so
down to the shore
seabirds squawk
in the electric guitar rigging

the feedback spotlight
blares triumphantly

Closing Time - Humidiflyers [from Humidiflyers]

follow the denials

these guys were fabulous musicians
high competence levels

Wake - Aaron Keyt [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, September 4, 2008]

to bells and birds
a ritual morning
for imaginary orchestra

psychedelic impressionism

Fibber opened the closet again

the sky is a delicate hue
lovely

Swift Arrows - Shelby Earl [from Swift Arrows]

songs have histories of their own
their where's and when's of enactments

Karen and I heard her introduce this song to the public
when we heard her at The Reverb Festival in 2012

Lamb Day 180505 B - Keith Eisenbrey [May 5, 2018]

sheep bleat with occasional vibrato
hominids honk in syllables
there are maa sheep
and baa sheep

there are chickens

Stately Autumnal Bizarro Bolero - Pete Comley [from Paintronics Vol. 2: Paintronics Electronics]

organization by tools used in its accomplishment
resulting states as settings change
maps an area of passing awareness
throbbing lowness

Madrigals, Book VIII: Hor che 'l ciel e la terra - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

reading the poem
as a literalized dialog
the literalization
of a poetic image (dialog)
is unnecessary
but that it allows opportunity
to embody the characters of the voices
in a separate polyphonic space
flesh them out
distinguish the voices and the vocalists
(separately parseable)

Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren, BuxWV 214 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

glory poured out
and runnethed over

Premier livre de clavecin: Deuxieme Ordre (fin) : Les Papillons. Tres legerement - François Couperin - Kenneth Gilbert

they flutter a jig among the flowers

near Walla Walla
O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort, BWV 60 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Amsterdam Baroque Choir, Ton Koopman

a pleasant land
sculpted as a meaning
wide enough to encompass
best and worst possibilities
mortal terror
comfort borne on the winds

our proper response in all humility
oh joy! trumpets!

the duet toward the end is jawdroppingly twisted
must be tricky to sing

Sonata in D Major for Organ, Kk. 288 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

the size of these organ tones is overlarge
takes a Scarlatti to make their dancing sparkle

Prelude in D minor, Op. 28 #24 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

the hands have cut loose from each other
tear the place apart

Album für die Jugend: Kleine Studie, Op. 68 #14 - Robert Schumann - Éric Le Sage

weightless dance
en pointe

Prelude in B-flat minor, Op. 37 #1 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

a quiver of an eyelid
the earth holds still

its named key is just where it ended

Walla Walla
Put it Right Here (or Keep it Out There) - Bessie Smith [from Empty Bed Blues]

trash talking

Practice Makes Perfect (take 3) - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

works with the dynamic of each phoneme
and their rhythms

Sonatas and Interludes: Sonata IX - John Cage - Boris Berman

so
each preparation-in-common set
has its associated figure set
everything in its box
even if it only once appears
it is already in its box

apparently
or
are they
the colors
gaudying up the surface of the boxes
perhaps they're all empty
what then
nullity within nullity

Tenderly - Bill Evans [from Everybody Digs Bill Evans]

ways to slide a wedge rhythm
into the collective flow
so that it glides across its floor
like Fred Astair's toes

Till There Was You - The Beatles [from With The Beatles]

a technical exercise
walk the pop walk

Walla Walla
Whistle While You Work - Louis Armstrong [from Disney Songs the Satchmo Way]

as pop
it centers the star
exclusively

Too Young - Michael Jackson [from Music & Me]

they are laid out

made uncanny

must have been quite the stage
big high note
ending blaze of glory

We Three - Patti Smith Group [from Easter]

acoustic
signifies memory
cinematically

Patti not Pop
because
the band doesn't fade into professionalism
it holds her in place
actively

the matter of the words
matters less
than their mattering
to the voice of the song

Walla Walla
Grunt - Benjamin Boretz, Jill Borner, Keith Eisenbrey, Dan Sedia [from InterPlay]

an otherly sourced dub
than the one heard last week

some ghosting artifacts
provide a temporal glow

having a thought
that is about
what it floats on
to increase its intensity
but
one does not always follow the greater imposed flow
but
that flow
that is imposed upon

convergence
in a new sound world

the frogs of night are heard from the yard
no interior
can escape their song

Up Town - Roy Orbison [from For The Lonely]

location location location
aspiration in love with the address

That's The Way Love Goes - Janet Jackson [from Janet]

the voice has become a ghost in its own song
a set of tracks

and layered
and echoed

Mitchell 131114 A - Keith Eisenbrey [November 14, 2013]

Mitchell was a guitar I bought from a neighbor

I was trying out
how to record directly to a device
through the pickup
but
the battery in the guitar was dead
and the result was this

Track 1 - Free Improvisation Quartets Project - a quartet from among: Amelia Love Clearheart, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Bruce Greeley, Ha-Yang Kim, Aaron Keyt, Jim Knodle, Carol Levin, Neal Kosály-Meyer, S. Eric Scribner [September 30, 2018]

the applause has been getting together
in small groups
to make music
improvisationally

any group of people
has a sensibility
as a unique grouping

improvisation
as practiced herein
might be an embodiment
into common experience
of that sensibility
as an intimate social form

Old Hundred - Keith Eisenbrey [July 16, 2023]

after having finally noted and understood
the weird key signatures used in the shape note book
and transposed it to its printed key

my added parts
support the tune
in spite of themselves

Alley Rat - Jimmy Blythe [from Really The Blues]

insinuating bass line
between the cracks tones
ripple up the bod
toes to twinkles

Alcotts - Charles Ives - Charles Ives [from Charles Ives Plays Charles Ives]

more care taken for this one
it would be an interesting speculative period-instrument experiment
to perform this
on a little square piano
such as may easily have been
in many a parlor
at the time of this composition

if
that isn't
what's going on here

it may just be the recording
but that piano
(though quite nice)
is not a grand
or so I would guess

Walla Walla

Try Your Wings
- Blossom Dearie [from Give Him the Ooh-La-La]

partitions the poem with wit
cocktail bar tempo

Something You Got - Chris Kenner [from Land of 1000 Dances]

I like the sound of this recording
the sounds sound like they're in the same room
they mesh

Old Friends (Bookends Theme) - Simon & Garfunkel [from Bookends]

at the end of side one of the album
on vinyl
a side
could be a structured set
so
the intelligentsia
could find an easy sophistication
goes all symphonic and all

Leave Your Hat On - Etta James [from Etta James]

objectification as flattery

Where Pathways Meet (alternate mix) - Sun Ra [from Languidity]

a monkey bar framework
supports the antics of the swinging agents
by bending with them
spring assist
framework of dance

Ricochet - David Bowie [from Let's Dance]

Banned Rehearsal 142 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [June 30, 1988]

Walla Walla
we'll let some lounge-y sonorities hang in the air
nightclub for dissolute composers
no namby pamby movie songs for us
we roll our own

ever shifting metaphors
not mixed
but
on the move

MovieTone!
Metaphors On The Move!

maudlin as all get out
Weepy Clown
begging the skies

proceed to collapse
do not pass go
do not collect two hundred dollars

shake the bars
silver screen narrative
music holding a thread in your face
immediate repetition
a gambit for awareness
bubble extension

I don't remember this session at all
I wonder why I was feeling such grandiose gestures?
angry at work perhaps
that would be about when I'd had enough
of being an abstractor

we take a break
to start over
differently configured
among the instruments

such dramatic psalmody

another long pause
into a strange land
of tape wobbles
and shimmery cymbals

I have no idea how we made that sound
it may have involved the reel to reel
in our play time

and now
the piano is back
with a lullaby
being poked by the sprite

a drum machine
has been birthed
without intent

the piano plays in tenths
0 4 7 9
root with added sixth

a session of episodes

triumphalist life advice

Banned Rehearsal 507 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [September 12, 1998]

we wash colors into the space
to hear it shining
bells on the vast walls

142 ended with me on drums (pretty sure)
and ten years later
there I am
on drums again (pretty sure)

as to piano and organ
I am at a loss
and I'm only guessing
Neal on guitar

we press toward loudness assertion
apparent personnel
may have changed instruments
in the melee

it isn't always pretty
we scrabble

come what may

we work the canvas vigorously
we ring the bell
to mark our leaving of this space

Chapel Event - Sheri Brown, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer, Lin Lucas [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, September 4, 2008]

audients take their seats individually
the camera is still
the stage is only partially visible
our viewpoint is behind and to the right
we were noticeably younger back then

pre-eventual pacing and seating adjustments

each audient

as are each of the performers
I am pacing
the doors are shut

the lights dim

the audients are dematerialized into fuzzy specters
the camcorder struggles with the dimness
struggles to find a focus
which throbs irregularly from near to far

gas masks

in fortissimos of octaves
octaves
in As of fortissimos

a bright hand emerges
through the spaces
between the heads
of audients

a dancer
is a body
that draws attention
a bodily avatar
of
our sense of body
occluded
by our own
and others
bodies

retains focus
by
its own disciplined focus

ghostlike forms appear
and dis-

gnomic spirits
enraptured
knight of a pale order

the unsettled focus
moves the figures of the audients
the space itself
is quivered

the sound of the camcorder's focus mechanism
a quiet tick tick

forms are guesswork
and then
Neal alone with his A

focus narrowed
near to vanishing

hallucinatory figures
wraiths
materialized
transcession
to center stage
light returns
as As fade

gestures are mimed
ite missa est

immolation by applause
to clear the focus
thank you for coming
the ping pong balls
are collected
collectively
the camcorder
is put out

Chard - Keith Eisenbrey

Walla Walla
August 18, 2025

Gradus 419 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

we will hear a plethoric value of pitches
we specialize here
in sonorities
that call intonation into question

thought threads
spun upon commonalities
among moments
and discommonalities
among the same figures

play
upon the variable values
of the durations
of now
as
they pass through the figures

a figure
differs from a filter
in that
a figure
particularizes
and a filter
departicularizes

figures deepen abstraction
filters sand it smooth

commonalities assist us
in keeping our place
or
in mapping our position
reassurance
desperate measures

the pages are loosely rumpled
an alternative compositional approach
might be
to maximize discommonalities
in the immediate awareness bubble
that
any latent properties of the rung's combinations
would make themselves apparent
as though
from raw data

threading through commonalities
is a mode of compositional thinking
but not the only such mode

the written score*
is a geography to be explored

*Neal
when necessitated by the plethora of pitches involved
produces written out scores
(graphically structured representations
of the rung's pitches in pitch space)
which
he then explores
by searching paths
within that specific geography
(perhaps geomorphology)
(or pitch space morphology)
(better terms?)
locations
(pitch sets)
cross-referenced
by their constituent pitches
and/or pitch classes

Music of Benjamin Boretz
Keith Eisenbrey, piano

The music of Benjamin Boretz, which I first encountered as an undergraduate, has played a central role in my own sense of musical possibility and depth ever since. I was deeply fortunate to study with him for a few years in the early 80s, and have been blessed with his ongoing friendship and conversation since that time. It is my distinct pleasure to share these recordings with you now.

Intermezzo in C Major, Op. 4 #4 - Robert Schumann - Eric Le Sage

getting mileage out of unanswered phrases

Mazurka in B minor, Op. 30 #2 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

turned over enough times
surely it will yield the hoped for response
Fie!

Turandot, Act 1 - Ferruccio Busoni - Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Gerd Albrecht, René Pape, Linda Plechm Gabriele Schreckenbach, Josef Protschka, Friedrich Molsberger, Celina Lindsley, Robert Wörle, Johannes Werner Prein, Gotthold Schwarz

one exotic
like any other
may as well be Mars
just so
the setting is sufficiently outside
any European's wider understanding
of the culturally plausible
that anything is possible

through-composed
on a different basis than Wagner or Verdi
the music is the scenery costumes and lighting
and only peripherally
the characterization of the individuals

unabashedly stagy
an illustrated book of an opera
the pages are opaque
we can't see through into the future
nor back into the past
we follow along as it is played for us

the whole apparatus
is presumably a stand-in for out-of-date ideas of marriage

tonality moves from one uncertainty to the next
through back alleys and hidden doors
the carefully composed lines for the singers are commendable

October 1, 2023

Song 15 - Charles Ives - Carol Sams, Russ Warner

trips and stumbles lightly through the dance

Evonce (alternate take) -Thelonious Monk [from The Complete Blue Note Recordings)

even while in the background
a rhythmic sensibility
the piano solo
though brief
is hardly as packed with notes
as his colleagues' are

Slippin' and Slidin' (demo) - Little Richard [from Here's Little Richard]

at an easy going tempo
allows inflection in the piano part

Hey, Good Lookin' - Ray Charles [from Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music]

Las Vegas is in the west

no country tavern
is going to have that size of an orchestra

The Gal from Joe's - Nina Simone [from High Priestess of Soul]

tempo of brassy bodily swagger
patterned motion from measure to measure

I Was Born In Love With You - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan with Michel LeGrand]

the urge to say something intelligent about these cuts
to prove that I get it
do I
probably not

God Only Knows - Carole King [from Simple Things]

the habit of unpatterned dancing
free style
not a step
does it ask
that the music
it is the dance of
be heavily structured
clear to the floor
possible
the purpose
is not to express
but to extradite
expel
purge
nice guitar work back there

This Hard Land - Bruce Springsteen [from Tracks]

do New Jersey lads say
when we did ride
or
when we rode
or
when we went

pulling in an Americana flavor of high-falutin' hick

Glass Spiders - David Bowie [from Never Let Me Down]

tells us a story
one could almost
more mood than narrative
the presence of the spoken words
is nearer than that of the sung words
we are further from the singer
than from the speaker

lessons in what can't be turned

Bernadette - Paul Simon [from Songs from the Capeman]

chipper

all of it
we are pulled inside

sneaking up on what one means to say

Feather Floats Away - Steve Layton & Improv Fridays [from Shared Circle]

an entry
a text

a temporal

the world is full of creative ideas of self-expression
and of what might count as that
high energy headbanging

room to dance in sparkle land
hide and seek between the drizzle drops
a rain game

lighting shift
the color of the day responds

callibrated performance
doling out the lines without hurry

A Fool Such As I - Bob Dylan [from A Tree With Roots]

while its body floats above
in a stiller wind
to another location

fledging
what to expect
post launch
nice guitar sound

especially the ones he's hollering

Somos Nada - Christina Aguilera [from Aguilera]

swinging for the upper deck
heavy beats on piano
long decay
left to do so

O Holy Night - The Philadelphia Brass Ensemble [from Festival of Carols in Brass]

no lazy dotted rhythms for these folks
nor even any histrionics in the stratosphere

Ein Kleine Nachtmusik (first movement) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart [from 100 Greatest Classics]

cadential elision
some motions are allowed to complete their tasks
some are interrupted
a scenario that goes around and around
for all the latecomers

Track 14 - The Humidiflyers [from Humidiflyers 2002]

the word part
is in a more believable voice
when being sung
than when doing the spoken thing
which sounds like it was written down to be spoken

A Pest You Metrosexuals (sic?) - The Capitol Steps [from O Christmas Bush]

Wedding Ring Vacation - Rachel Harrington [from Makin' Our House a Honky-Tonk]

lots of

pressed
weighty

and then an ad
sheesh

having firm words with myself

a band
an activity
a family-like relationship
a team
a shared endeavoring

how old-fashioned
make me louder
producer
stand-in for group collaboration
the various filters through which she is singing
wander about in ovoid orbitals

the care they have taken in their harmony singing shows
not done with synths

Can't Go Home - Doug Kolmar [from So Said Life]

a nice hot cup of tea
well cozied

October 3, 2023

The Scarecrow - Pink Floyd [from The Piper At The Gates of Dawn (digital)]

clip clop
horse wagon
life in the shire

Remix for P is Free - Boogie Down Productions [from Criminal Minded]

self-promotion
of both band and genre
self-consciously branding itself
within the societal conceit of brand competition

Battle - Gang Starr [from 8 Mile]

so the business of music is front and center
in the brand's conceit
the music within the business
seeks to turn around and shake hands

Sold Yer Guitar Blues - The Tripwires [from Makes You Look Around]

concerning the hard life
of dirt-level music

Collette - Yuni in Taxco [from Prizes]

long on the verge of a downbeat
which just snuck in the back door
those lines are about their pitch trajectory
a line
from top
downward to the floor
repeat

on the self-invention seas
a little bit of bleach and a magic wand

your call

an entire soundtrack
minus only dialogue
without film
but even so
with lighting and camera work
intact

Big K - Goat [from Live at Sonarchy]

working with power tools
wear eye and ear protection
be mindful of your fingers
router and lathe
table saw and power punch

Glad That You Asked - Song Sparrow Research [from Song Sparrow Research]

by virtue of its being
as are we
equally valid
by virtue of our being
not just
born so
nor created so
but being so
in being

Why Change a Thing - Bad Cop/Bad Cop [from Warriors]

attacking life in the work place
where it drives

The New Savannah - Jostaberry [from Hello Turbine]

atypical chords and patterns
within the rock and roll world
the mid bit
where the drum stays out
is nice
I find myself asking for atypical drumming
to match the pitch stuff going on

at what point historically

impinge on the songwriting

blame the producers

suggestiveness
back in our more innocent age

lift up your people

Dave & Ruth Memories - Dave and Ruth Bowman

my people
it was this whole thing
met in Chemistry class

there are weird politics
behind each piety
but
these were a wonderful uncle and aunt
(Dave was my mom's brother)

Son of a Good Man - Bigfoot Wallace & His Wicked Sons [from Virgil]

down in a swamp
tell a story
set a mood

Motorcycle Blues - The Low Hums [from Night Magic Wine]

the words

all day long
a constant
until the swerves
after the verse
the point of having a keyboard player
is to have someone to drown out

in the space where all are foreign
the purpose of this music
is to open possibilities
to weave tapestries
to beguile in incense

theft
there is nothing one-ish
about beat one
an excuse for fancy drumming

lots of yelling

reading the signs

October 5, 2023

are the wiggles

interaction residue
the news from one side
the talk from another

all those keys have a past
I'll catch you up
while we wait for the curtain

Save You - Pearl Jam [from Rearviewmirror]

a signifier of authenticity
we're real
we plug in our guitars just like you folks
high energy usage
simple parts
fancy singing

Balance Beam - Tyrannosaurus Grace [recorded live at The Rat and Raven, Seattle, August 9, 2012]

happenin' joint

imaginative tempo work in there

Part 6 - Claire Lodge [from Seconds]

one two three four
seven kinds of awesome
