Preface

"For one subsequently cited as an apostle of capitalist virtues, Franklin took a strikingly socialistic view of property. 'All property, indeed, except the savage's temporary cabin, his bow, his match-coat, and other little acquisitions absolutely necessary for his subsistence, seems to me to be the creature of public convention,' he wrote. Laws and customs made accumulation of property possible; the public therefore had the right to regulate the quantity and use of property. 'All the property that is necessary to a man for the conservation of the individual and the propagation of the species is his natural right, which none can justly deprive him of; but all the property superfluous to such purposes is the property of the public, who by their laws have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it whenever the welfare of the public shall demand such disposition.' Needless to say, this was hardly a universal opinion among a people who had fought a war over taxes. But Franklin was unmoved. 'He that does not like civil society on these terms, let him retire and live among savages.'"

H. W. Brands, from The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin

Lost Canon No. 1 - S. Eric Scribner [from Sketches: Electronic Music]

the reed drone sound
throws the piano sound
into soft relief
its plain edges buffed

Nocturne in B-flat Major (#5) - John Field - Benjamin Frith

as we hear this melody
it seems that we remember it
moment by moment
its memory returns

where heard we it before
why
just then
as we remember it

a thing built within memory
prompted by notes going by

Die Rose, S. 556/1 (After Schubert, D. 745) - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

Liszt transcribed at a hat's drop
as part of an exploration
into the inner workings of melody

in this one
he extemporizes wildly
but no more so
than many a jazz pianist does
to a simple show tune
Art Tatum and Tea for Two

learned through his hands

Sonata in F minor, Op. 14 - Robert Schumann - Vladimir Horowitz

the so-called Concerto Without Orchestra
and it does play groups of figurations off against each other
in concertante fashion

it isn't about the bravura
which this also has
but
at the beck and call
of a wild poetry

Horowitz was criticized somewhat
for veering from the straight and narrow
of sticking to a steady tempo
into
a rubato
that distorted the structure of the rhythm

I just don't hear that

but these rhythms he plays
make a meter outside strict time
it doesn't exist to serve the page
it illuminates aspects of Schumann's sophisticated sense of motion

I was fortunate as a teen to hear Horowitz play this live

July 26, 2026

Pas des echarpes, 3me air de ballet, Op. 37 - Cecile Chaminade - Mark Viner

not much to distract
from its through-line of notes
but a clearly drawn music

Norwegian Peasant Dances, Op. 72: No. 2, Jon Væstafæ's Springar - Edward Grieg - Håkon Austbø

a snapshot of a characteristic demotic rhythm
(characteristic to a national identity)

2 Poèmes: Fantastique, Op. 71 #1 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

much to distract
from any direct through-line it may project

an ephemeral region

Heah Me Talkin' To Ya - Louis Armstrong and His Savoy Ballroom Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

the beat kept by the drums
is just the sound of the tune's feet dancing

Of Thee I Sing (Incomplete) - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin]

the orchestra is a strictly professional outfit
no showboating that might suggest a reason
not to focus on the star-voice

This Boy - The Beatles [from The Beatles Anthology]

montage ready

How About Me - Rusty Dedrick Orchestra [from Irving Berlin All By Myself: Notable Compositions 1926-1933]

this orchestra plays like an all-star orchestra
being a professional orchestra

that trombone player plays like he means it

Lucky Star (New Mix) - Madonna [from Madonna

dance instruction
latest moves
latest styles

this orchestra plays like a machine

a dance is an enclosed time
a bubble within experience

this song goes around at least once too many times

July 27, 2026

Selfish - U-Men

each line differentiated within its stanza
remains OK with being strangely formed

Lydia - King's Singers [from Chanson d'amour]

this music doesn't bite
but caresses with casual suggestiveness

Waiting Game - Goodness [from Goodness 1995-1998]

each line has a space for the singing to happen
and a space for the band to respond
and articulate structural aspects

Daddy - Beyoncé [from Dangerously In Love]

story told at several layers of lifted (and unlifted) voice

fancy Father's Day card
sung prose

Boys Boys Boys - Lady Gaga [from The Fame]

silly dance number
making hay out of one clever rhyme

Caça ao Lobisomen - Camarones Orquestra Guitarrística [from O Curioso Caso da Música Invisível]

machismo booster

Ladder With Windows - Steve Layton [from Virtual Composition]

regularity in part
an in side
and an out
we ascend
to glimpse through
to the out

Side A Outtro - Unattributed [from Dirt Cult Records: You Don't Have To Be Cool]

a brief message from our compilators

Wonder Why - Bill Evans [from Some Other Time]

the song's presence
finds itself among a jostling of times
all propelled along in a common flow

Walk On By - The Stranglers [from Nancy's Mix]

the guitar tech wants us to hear
the oh so specific distortion on the track
so he gives it a couple of bars to itself

everybody gets a solid solo verse or two

"...out of the air..." - Elaine Barkin - Georgina Dobree [from Open Space 34]

synth and basset horn
spacious but enclosed
interactive in a believably conversational mode
these sounds play for each other

July 28, 2026

Hungarian Dance #7 - Johannes Brahms - Itzhak Perlman [from The Art of Itzhak Perlman]

provincial exotic
slight

I Gotta Feeling It's Gonna Be All Right - Victorious Gospel Choir [from Bruce Springsteen, Christmas in Asbury Park]

Bruce introduces only
not part of the act

Smoke Is Rising - The True Bugs [25 Songs]

portent

Northern Lights - Dawn Richard [from Goldenheart]

beat as commonest denominator
industrialism enforcement

Steady Enough - Kara Hesse [from Sojourner]

tribute
steady is the key word

Diabelli Recomposed (continued) [streamed May 11, 2023]

34
the clean up staff puts its parts back in storage

35
a nervous nibbler peeking from its hole

36
the young pining royal firstling
in long sequestered night

37
as an old one
trying to recall
its youthful contours

38
humphing officialdom
sets it down
in hextuplicate

The Coat of Many Colors (Live Version) - Dolly Parton [from Just Because I'm a Woman]

the pride of humble beginnings

Shaking Through - REM [from Murmur]

sound rides on string twang
song part of track
followed by a bit of some other groove
but brief

First Light - Richard Danielpour - Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz

in the uncomfortable place
of film music composers
needing their serious music credentials stamped
music composed
as an appendix
to a resume

program music
with a fig leaf
over its subservience

a fetish
for fantasizing at length
or
this is why film cues
must be kept brutally short

Just a Little While to Stay Here [from New Orleans Traditional Jazz Legends 3]

the past as a constraint with rose-colored specs

Wanksta - 50 Cent [from Get Rich Or Die Tryin']

last ditch
pity me
plea

Night Game - Dana Batali, Adrian Carr, Mark Dickinson, David Laur, Mark Nelson, J. K. Randall, P. U. Security [from Inter/Play]

echoing sounds off a surface
in a dull roar of wind
shouting at the sky
power roar
an imperfectly doubled space
how much of the echo is artifact of an echo
and how much artifice of the tech
were there separate recording devices
in different locations
within an echoing field?

in fact
it's a stadium
as we discover
when security arrives to investigate

the jet is jeered along
till out of range

the panel of experts
turns the tape

My Song - Bright Sheng - Peter Serkin

planes sliding independently
spilling over
cycles of motions
stern connector plunk

Kanta Parahit - India [from The World Sings Goodnight]

could they have imagined a less comfortable acoustic
for infants to sleep
or is this the most they could accomplish?

Sarabande (Stereo Mix) - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey, Jim Knodle [from Jack Straw Cultural Center Blind Youth Audio Project 2003]

the piano is nicely forward in this mix

July 29, 2026

Collaborations-Griffin & Kaleel - Sacajawea Elementary Students [from Digital Dreams]

around patterns of four

driving home song
at driving home tempo

Ferris Wheel - Canals of Venice [from Fall On November]

music as a stage
shaped by
and shaping
how the words go

Kraanerg (end) - Iannis Xenakis - Callithumpian Consort, Stephen Drury]

a tiny fissure
and what flows through it
as understood from many angles

loudspeaker enabled
limited by the need
at the time

took right over

this music
is for impressing with
not
for humming the tunes of

precision lip service

Go - Pearl Jam [from Rearviewmirror]

sound track to a mediated life
suddenly immediate

Adiobatic Expansion - Brad Hawkins, Jesse Canterbury [from Brad Hawkins, Jesse Canterbury]

exact intonations
no hiding
measure of angular intimacy

Heat - Mariah Carey [from E=MC2]

being cutesy cutesy
not taking itself seriously much

Bodyless Material - Bad Cop Bad Cop [from Wings of Techno]

its artifice is its material
no body home

let's be Throbbing Gristle

Crazy Ideas - Denise Glover [from Gaps In The Stories]

the groove is webbed within
personal among
the players
and include
any

Romulus Hunt (end) - Carly Simon - Nashville Opera, Dean Williamson

something must be happening
there are an awful lot of dramatic moments
and two
count 'em two
up-transpositions
the third
was too much

now they're all so sorry
it was all a nightmare
and still is
we are overwhelmed
with author's message

a missed opportunity

Sonata in C Major, Kk. 327 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

contrasting
narrow groupings
and expansive support figures

Album d'un voyageur, S. 156/R. 8, Book I, "Impressions et Poesies": IIa. Le Lac de Wallenstadt - Franz Liszt - Ashley Wass

Romantic art
sought to elevate
the relation pertaining
twixt man and nature
to one
of perfect sympathy
in all its sweetness
and violence

it seeks to teach us
how to view the world
by example

this
for example
is how to contemplate a lovely flower

Album für die Jugend für Klavier, Op. 68: II. Für Erwachsenere - Robert Schumann - Éric Le Sage

down on the floor with the kids
playing with tin soldiers and dress-up dolls

fireside adventure tales
and dreams of quiet pleasures

depictions of fantastic creatures and lands
begets a wandering mind

ghosts and goblins
and elves of mischief

June 1, 2026

Poetic Tone-Pictures, Op. 3 - Edvard Grieg - Håkon Austbø

bunches of notes
stumbled through

clear meter and balance
to work against

pleasing pieces
passions kept
under careful
Northern
control

Promenade matinale - Marie Jaëll - Alexandre Sorel

lines drift free
from their original moorings

I'm liking the drama
between the hands in this second one

lengths are measured
by figure alternation count

this fourth one
has weight to throw around

2 Poems, Op. 69 - Alexander Scriabin - Michael Ponti

a bouquet
such as a fine wine might provide

faeries on skates and sparkles

Beau Koo Jack - Louis Armstrong and his Savoy Ballroom Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

feeling good
spread it around

Summertime - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin]

she grabs you
at every phrase
right at the start
keeps you

All Too Soon - Ella Fitzgerald [from Love Songs: The Best of the Verve Song Book]

everything aims at the title
at the end of each stanza

Julia - The Beatles [from The Beatles (White Album)]

voice doubled

Zero and Blind Terry - Bruce Springsteen [from Tracks]

such a grandiose hero fantasy
so that
any schmo might imagine themselves into it

Tears Tears Tears - T. Bone Burnett [from Truth Decay]

poem composed around the title
and similarly repeated words
as a way
to forestall the payoff
in the ensuing lines

Bring Us In Good Ale (Holst) - King's Singers [from My Spirit Sang All Day]

this one is fun
thanks Gus!

Ecstasy - PJ Harvey [from Rid of Me]

out of body doings

Disco 77 - Goodness [from Goodness 1995-1998]

vocal closely embedded into the mix
doesn't stick out
but is clearly distinguished
and reasonably intelligible
now and then

Curse of Cthulu - Scurvy Bastards [from Battle Born]

monster movie adventure
maritime
days of sail

Play Selection (Interlude)/The 1 - Janet Jackson [from Discipline]

entirely meretricious
for social dancing

reduce the parts in play
then pattern the residual vamp

our day to day troubles
become a poetic world

Don't Have Time for Candy - Your Mother Should Know [recorded live at The Skylark, Seattle, March 1, 2018]

the endless tuning of guitars
stripped down version of YMSK
guitar tambourine and vocals

June 2, 2026

Tree and Stone - S. Eric Scribner [from Ussers of Sleep]

mineral tapping
vegetable rustling

I have participated in realizations of this score
several times now
the score object
is a black and white graphic
of
(I think)
a landscape
with mountains
peppered with wooded areas
over which
is laid
an asymmetrical grid

each segment of which
corresponds
to a span of time
more or less
chronometric

the density of marks
within those grid segments
taken
to represent
proportions of the time
to be allotted
to sound making
or not sound making

each player
has a differently configured grid

there are no particular instructions
as to coordination
beyond the clock

on this end
we hear mostly rustling
punctuated periodically
by the tapping

the rustling
is full of internal detail
the tapping
points
to particular moments

the spans of its events
are brief enough
to be almost without duration
we hear it
but
it is not there
by the time
we register it in consciousness

up front
though
is the overt
made-by-humans nature
of both the rustling and the tapping

Vanessa, Act 3 - Samuel Barber - Metropolitan Opera Orchestra & Chorus, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Eleanor Steber, Nicolai Gedda, Rosalind Elias, Giorgio Tozzi, Regina Resnik

hustle and bustle
it's yet another opera stage party
half expect Don Giovanni and Leporello
to make an appearance
instead of the drunken oaf doctor

the orchestra plays
a tone poem
of the story
concurrent with
but independent of
the stage business

You're Gonna Hear From Me - Bill Evans [from Some Other Time / The Lost Session from the Black Forest]

melodist on the light fantastic

takes a bow

The Puppet - Echo & The Bunnymen [from Nancy's Mix]

the mix starts
at a moderated presence
then they turn up the volume
for you

Hairshirt - REM [from Green]

uniformity of sound throughout
the notes
are within the sound's
start to finish
homogeneity
top to bottom

Plateau - Nirvana [from Unplugged in New York]

stratified polis

Coyote Dance - Tingstad & Rumbel [from American Acoustic]

fipple flute duet
with guitar
lively

Nothing Fails - Madonna [from American Life]

a thread in the tropes of American pop
is the notion
that a pop woman
is faithful unconditionally

abuse
is felt
to be
deserved

social gaslighting

fay-ills
(two syllables)

Cologne - Dolly Parton [from Backwoods Barbie]

as above
from a different point of view

how a woman
was expected
to leave her mark
on her man

Hanuman - Steve Layton [from The Composer Plays Revisited]

these pianos are conversing
with intent to converse

femme fatale
among a cohort

Which Side Won? - Brenda Ray [from Original Songs/50s Music]

my immediate elders

Wakefield - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [December 24, 2023]

but earnest
dance couple

songs from the travelin' types

Those Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You) - Thelonious Monk [from The Complete Columbia Studio Solo Recordings]

his touch enforces pitch

You're The One For Me - Jonathan Richman [from Jonathan Sings!]

so sweet
but does it normalize stalking?

Angels We Have Heard On High - London Symphony Orchestra [from Joy To The World]

I earnestly hope everybody involved with this
got paid

at least among the musicians

who wants to play tastefully?

gratuitous key change
so manufactured
yep
there goes the descant
and
the trumpets

Cold Mountain Songs: The Bird of Five Colors - Robert Morris Deborah Norin-Kuehn, Margaret Kampmeier [from Open Space 30]

it shimmers

Speechless - Beyoncé [from Dangerously In Love]

another trope of the culture
the total absorption of the woman
by the man
as a make out loop track

Babe You Ain't Bad - Smokestack and the Foothill Fury [from A Live Wire]

his guitar playing
is intricate
nervous
heavy and delicate

Don't You Care - The Swearengens [from Waiting On The Sunrise]

the engineered sound
has an offputting harshness to it
too much compression?

Duke of Sorrow - Strung Out [from Black Out The Sky]

similar problem here
the sound
of old tech
is difficult to reproduce
with new tech

Adapt - Tom Baker Quartet [from Begin Again]

persons of sounds
arrange a space
to suit the time
or
a time
to suit the space

Summertime - Miles Davis [from The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz]

with some swagger and some sleaze

I Like It Like That - The Kingsmen [from The Very Best of The Kingsmen]

out of town dance hall

Atlas Eclipticalis with Winter Music 831211 830 PM (end) - John Cage - New Performance Group, John Cage

music of the ellipsoid solids

June 3, 2026

She No Rattle My Cage - Girl Trouble [from Hit It Or Quit It]

diversity among musical cultures
reflects the same
among us
as
presumably
homogeneity among them
reflects
the same
among us
so that
we identify musics
by
their cultural origin

O Madame, pers-je mon tems (1552) - The Baltimore Consort [from La Rocque'n'Roll]

one wonders how much of this
is from a score
and how much
was cooked up for this performance

Soundscape - Kathy [from Jack Straw Cultural Center Blind Youth Audio Project 2003]

the last morning on earth
somebody may be fishing for splashing

Propitious Visions - Christian Asplund [from Viola]

as though made of double bass

Genius, Carnivore, Beauty Queen - The Hunting Club [from Holiday Beach]

adventure party types
they sing as though the words
might be worth understanding
even if buried

the energy expended
in doing so

Let There Be Love - Christina Aguilera [from Lotus]

dance club vibe

Sarabande - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey, Jim Knodle [from Keith Eisenbrey #9: 2002-2005]

gosh but Jim blew that sweet

Sit Down Servant - Ida Craig [from The Art of Field Recording]

interesting ornaments on the ends of lines
lightly voiced
work song?

Come Back Baby/Groovin' - Aretha Franklin [from Lady Soul]

cultural icon
cultural brand
personification of a product

clever quote
of a contemporary
in the backups
Sunday Sunday

Untitled - Dan Sedia [recorded live at Bard College, March 18, 1983]

flirting
with tuning
into the piece
one is intoning
until
it bursts out

we have been there all along
then
there are adjustments
to the space's furnishings

Atmadja Duma Strachilu - Bulgarian State Radio & TV Female Vocal Choir [from Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares Volume 2]

the history of our music
confuses itself
in perpetually hearing itself
in itself

the voice-leadings of these arrangements
are echt Late 20th Century
as is the engineering
as is the concept

The Rag Time Dance - Scott Joplin - Itzhak Perlman [from The Art of Itzhak Perlman]

every artifact of music one comes across
is an act of volition
an idea to do
that is
then
done
whether it's Mr. Perlman and his pianist
having a blast
or Ida Craig
singing while washing dishes

giving Joplin the full Paganini

Colors: Turquoise Paisley - Brad Hawkins, Jesse Canterbury [from Brad Hawkins, Jesse Canterbury]

all the fleshy squiggles
sparkle at the points

poetics of hard drinking
bottom plumbing
as a blues

Driving In New York - Lori Goldston [from Film Scores]

the constant anxiety
even the daylight is dark and glare

Clacking at the Clicking - Bret Hart [from Double Thud]

a music that seems comfortable
with its steady
stable
ticking time

clever as it is
within the grid
it remains a grid

once extruded
the time remains
as a color
within the residue

Totem 30 - Sascia Pellegrini [from Totems VI]

these sounds are obscured
by a moot scrim
a medium between us
a membrane
an enclosed resonance
anything that touches the membrane
distorts
creates artifacts
in its substrate medium

a device
is a delicate being
with parameters
for optimal fidelity

adjustment of parameter
adjusts fidelity

it hasn't finished
just because you think it has

strange trolleys and trams

Pictures of Lily - The Who [from Magic Bus]

the joy of stroke mags

Double - J. K. Randall, Mathew Rosenblum, Marjorie Tichenor, Daniel Warner [from Inter/Play]

anyone comes into music
from their own self
alternate routes being unavailable

what one is
is
what ones music is

or
one is
as to
what ones music is
as music
is
to what oneself is
but leftward right

the old mirror trick
quoth 86

which indelibly dyes

all we do
in doing music
or ingesting it

the rightness
or wrongness
of a moment
is not the moment's problem

we'll store these tunes
in this closet
where they can be found
when their time is upon anyone

what might be a sign
of the end
is a sign
to continue further

we have entered a new chamber

this music has wandered
onto an empty stage
peopled
by ghostlight
and them

Tony's Theme - Pixies [from Surfer Rosa]

comprehension presumed
if not accomplished

Toe! Knee!

June 4, 2026

I Got Shoes - Robert Shaw Festival Singers [from Amazing Grace]

the nice part of the lyric
as the title
rather than
the
ever'body talkin' 'bout heav'n ain't agoin' there
part

first we check the controls
lights
signals
go
stop
steer

as a pop genre
has one foot in string band
one in blues
one in suburbia

Chubin - No Man's String Band [from Let The Truth Be Told]

right on cue
with accordion of some kind

Clairvoyant Dance Remix - The Science of Deduction [from Alternative Works]

a dance music
might be a sequence of prompts to movement

open prompt:
it is a prompt
if a dancer takes it to be so
and
is a prompt then
to do that movement
that the dancer
so moved to do
was so moved to do

open until enacted

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night - Keith Eisenbrey - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey [from Keith Eisenbrey #9: 2002-2005]

strophic structure
needs stanzas of like size and shape
the payoff
is
that they are fun
or otherwise engaging
to be inside of
for as many stanzas
as there are to sing

Shout (Parts 1 and 2) - ? and The Mysterians [from The Best of ? and The Mysterians]

holding it back until the end
and continues to accelerate
or to seem to
driving forward eagerly

An Innocent Man - Billy Joel [from The Essential Billy Joel]

not far removed
from a Frankie Avalon schtick
or Sinatra for that matter

Positivity - Prince [from Lovesexy]

a dance song might be a soundscape
upon which to move
a prompt
to the feet and hips and shoulders
from below
a bed bounce

this one wanders around
is it lost?

Sign of the Times (Outtake) - Nina Simone [from A Single Woman]

a serious talk

Twilight Time - Glenn Tate [from Days of Wine and Roses]

triple whammy vowel sequence

Ode to Billie Joe - Rachel Harrington [from City of Refuge]

bad news across the supper table

an edge to the intonation of everything
the imparted residue of amplification
nothing ever quite matches
though
it seems
it must be matching

failure
self defeatist
loop script

What Is Your Middle Name - Anna La Berge, Tom Baker [from Sand]

after my Uncle Ed
my dad's brother

making characters
in stories
out of folks
at back tables

text arranged syllabically
on a solid frame
with only certain tolerances
for give and take

Maryland, My Maryland [from New Orleans Traditional Jazz Legends Vol. 3]

all stand
and sing praises
of their motherland

sounds more like Oh Tannenbaum to me

Inside #1 - Doug Haire [from The Crawford Opera]

a found footage soundscape

Beautiful, Dirty, Rich - Lady Gaga [from The Fame]

top of some idea of style
fantasy wear

Track 5 - Pouch [recorded live at Victory Lounge, Seattle, July 6, 2013]

Bends - Bad Luck [from Four]

I see race car footage
in slo mo
its smooth careening
dissected
over an industrial Bo Diddley generator

running out of juice
or broadening
into more tortured planes

we are the track
heard from below
it howls and shrieks
four-wheeled banshees
in their frenzy
smothered
in bells and tinkles

Keith Eisenbrey 32: Sabbatical Improvisations (part 3) 2014

In 2013 I had reached an inflection point in my big project, Études d'exécution imminent, and took a sabbatical (indifferently observed) from composing written-down music. I filled the time with various forms of improvisation, both "in-the-moment" composing, and sometimes puttering about with multi-tracking and other digitally applied effects. Here is the third bunch of them.

Preface

"Soon the two ships diverged their wakes; and long as the strange vessel was in view, she was seen to yaw hither and thither at every dark spot, however small, on the sea. This way and that her yards were swung round; starboard and larboard, she continued to tack; now she beat against a head sea; and again it pushed her before it; while all the while, her masts and yards were thickly clustered with men, as three tall cherry trees, when the boys are cherrying among the boughs.

But by her still halting course and winding, woful way, you plainly saw that this ship that so wept with spray, still remained without comfort. She was Rachel, weeping for her children, because they were not."

Herman Melville, from Moby Dick; or, The Whale.

as being common
among African Americans
technical perfection

I Shall Be Released - The Band [from Music from Big Pink]

often I find
that the composition

is more interesting to me
as composition

it is in those cases
composition
of a different kind of slant
or mode

does Mr. Helm
have the voice of a countertenor?
{NB: perhaps, but this one is sung by Mr. Manuel}

Liebeslied - for a pianist alone - Benjamin Boretz - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded October 17, 2024]

I like this tempo
how it moves right along
into the thick of it
yet
hurries through
none of it
the progression
through time's groves
is without hindrance

the effect
of the repetitions
of the whole
twice
is
about
how we feel
about

is it even

what
are they?

sound with resonant pitch

if sound
is heard

rolling around
in the mouth of dissonance

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Preface

"As for describing the hunt, I own, fairly, I can't. I've been at a hunt, but what a hunt is - why the horses will go among the dogs and ride them down - why the men cry out 'yooooie' - why the dogs go snuffling about in threes and fours, and the huntsman says 'Good Towler - good Betsy;' and we all of us after him say, 'Good Towler - good Betsy;' in course: then after hearing a yelp here, and a howl there, tow, row, yow, yow, yow! bursts out, all of a sudden from three or four of them, and the chap in the velvet cap screeches out (with a number of oaths I shan't repeat here) 'Hark, to Ringwood!' and then 'There he goes!' says some one; and all of a sudden, helter skelter, skurry hurry, slap bang, hooping, screeching, and hurraing, blue coats and red coats, bays and greys, horses, dogs, donkeys, butchers, baronets, dustmen, and blackguard boys, go tearing, all together, over the common after two or three of the pack that yowl the loudest. Why all this is, I can't say, but it all took place the second Thursday of last March, in my presence."

In The Unknown Tongue - Jim Knodle - Keith Eisenbrey

Jim's score had been sitting on my piano desk for several months
and after thus being pondered
I decided to write an arrangement
that leaned in to its folk hymn oddities
metrical and syllablical

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Madrigals, Book IX: Alcun non mi consigli - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

song allows poetry to rhyme
in multiple dimensions
aside from phonemic
by which allowances
it can sit right up to the table
and converse like a human

Canzona in G Major, BuxWV 170 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

Buxtehude
more playful than Bach
who is all business

Höchsterwunschtes Freudenfest, BWV 194 - Johann Sebastian Bach - Amsterdam Baroque Choir, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Ton Koopman

we pace out the extent of the grounds
the chorus gathers the excitement together
everything in its place
speeches where speeches go

each of these four count bars
occupies their four counts
as a way of moving voices around the parts of the figures

weights shift across cyclic duration segment positions

much of the intellectual heft
of the music
on the scale degree functions
as they imply depths
behind the surface melody/tonality

Sonata in C minor, Kk. 303 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

music without moral instruction
or elevated purpose

Ouverture des Francs-Juges, S471 (from Les Francs-Juges, Op 3, by Berlioz) - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

Liszt was a cultural amplifier
composer pianist uniquely suited
to champion his century
by interpreting it
through his ear and hands

Kinderszenen: Kurioser Geschichte, Op. 15 #2 - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

such care at phrase ends!

Etude in C-sharp minor - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

he isn't capable of

Lady Grinning Soul - David Bowie [from Aladdin Sane]

a repertoire of techniques
in figuration form

Concerto for Piano, Flute, and Strings - Keith Eisenbrey - Thalia Chamber Symphony, Dean Williamson, Ellen Berkovitz, Keith Eisenbrey [recorded November 16, 1979]

oh the adolescent earnesticity
a bit clumsy but endearing

and you can tell I'm thinking
about how notes might go together
or how pieces might go
to be piece shaped

Corpse of a Nation - The Trolls [from Bard Sampler 82-83]

literally my personal introduction to the bar band culture
was the Trolls
as
the guitarist (Bruce Huber)
was a fellow MFA student
and
I heard them live

combining an indoor space
our living room in Seattle

the boardwalks at Old Faithful in Wyoming
which was unapologetically windy

we discuss the louds and the quiets

we hear the bubbling of rock heated water
in a pool

the funmaker makes the quiet indoor space
much louder

we attempt grandeur
but collapse into the wind

the inputs take turns overwhelming each other
click wind click wind click wind

is the preparation riff
that introduces the groove

this starts there
and heads in the other direction
toward the antigroove

these sounds seem to arise
at random spots
though I know
that their generation
was designed
to make it seem so
out of systems
that can only cycle
per a clock

the extended spectrum of grooviness
what might be the optimal
discriminative interval
to explain
or translate
the spectrum
of grooviness
to a stranger?

Box Springs - Steve Layton [from The Composer Plays Revisited]

this
for instance
comes at groovy
from the awestruck angle

Gradus 338 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [September 3, 2018]

a simultaneity has erupted upon us
a registrally ordered pitch mash

composition might be
the elucidation
of its contents
maximally mapped
experientially schematicized
fully rotatable
wallowing allowed
alternate explanations undertaken
with gusto

what are the moments
of an undulating resonance
or
are we trying to count
the flicker of leaves on a tree
in a soft breeze
a texture filled moment
an artifact
as it were
of the natural world
sounds like that
because that
is what sounds
are like
as an experience
of an aural sensation

Pink Moon - Steve Layton [from Red Sky]

soft buzzy splashes
eerie light
an uncanny encounter

Stop Kidding - McKinney's Cotton Pickers [from That Devilin' Tune]

the arrangement is designed
to make it easy to understand
when
within the dance
one
is

but lively and amusing

I Concentrate 0n You - Judy Garland [from Judy In Love]

this arrangement
is bestrewn with Latin knick knacks

Judy sells it utterly
and takes a bow at curtain

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
God Rest You Merry Gentlemen [from The Life Treasury of Christmas Music]

like a Christmas Card

Pack Up YouR Sins (And Go to the Devil) - Rusty Dedrick Orchestra [from Irving Berlin: All By Myself, Notable Compositions 1926 - 1933]

party time with the winds

the one in Hades (with ladies)

Snoopy's Search - Billy Cobham [from Spectrum]

fun with those first synths

What You Gonna Name That Pretty Baby? - Laethe Elder [from The Art of Field Recording]

borned in a stall

a gospel in a story

5 Movements: November 17, 1983 - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded February 6, 1984]

if
as here
one does not perform
an articulation
of the threeness
of the groups
one loses
ones grip
on the possibility
of matching
which group
is being played

to be in a pulsed
but meterless expanse

though
I was performing from the score
which
I was reading aloud
as
these notes
I was playing
Scouts' Honor
straight off the page

the shape of the score
a sinusoidal cycle
is mirrored graphically
in the contours
of the pitch stacks
on the page

this
of the five movements
is the thorny hedge
which must be struggled through
with inadequate protection

thin knives of distinction
shave off slices of pitch flesh
for later microscopic inspection

Ben's piano had a crazy little extra to its tone

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
You Are The Everything - REM [from Green]

a strong song
doesn't need the fancy arrangement
except to be shiny as a record

Man-Size Sextet - PJ Harvey [from Rid of Me]

with jaw clenched
two beat lines

Blue For No Reason - Bonnie Raitt [from Fundamental]

off the rootsy end
of country blues

ways to signal finishing up
loosely unraveling

I Want - Keith Eisenbrey [from Summer Songs/Winter Mix] [November 6, 2003]

to want
to need
to lack
to miss

demonstrating the difference
between the sudden song of 1985
and the composed production of 2003

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Crooked Path - Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs [from Crooked Path]

a blues stanza
has a trajectory
aims at its last word

The Letter (Don't Look Back) - The Swearengens [from Waiting On The Sunrise]

epistolary
says so right in the title

Black Out The Sky - Strung Out [from Black Out The Sky]

anthem pop for suburbaloids

AKU - Keith Eisenbrey [from Keith Eisenbrey 2: 1981-1982]

purity
is compromised
by its domicile
within our noggins

and that
was a fabulously prepared entrance
for a new kind of sound
Symphony-Concertante
from the Future

structural orchestration
room to sprawl
caught up in the whirl
of music parts
persistent diatonicism
scrutinized
in the lab
it's a slog in parts
but
must be worked out
to the end

its duration
is a part of its being
and part
of each of its parts' beings

reaches out
into surrounding space

if an interval
is the effect
of one pitch
upon another
is that
what's happening here?

does a piece of music
need to seek
to enter
the lists of renown
to still be strenuous music?

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Blue Piano Stomp - Johnny Dodds [from Really The Blues]

a lovely light touch on the ivories
a gleeful twinkle toes

this music is feeling good

Don't Sugar Me - Norman Monath [from Songs of The Pogo]

in Mae West slinky groove

Silent Night - Various Artists [from A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spektor]

he's trying to be a hip Lawrence Welk
for the next generation

is this what the young folks mean by cringe?

Oh, Sweet Mary - Big Brother and The Holding Company [from Cheap Thrills]

interesting vocal arrangment
for that first stanza
I wonder whose hands it was

going for symphonic scope
music to fill stadiums with

Come Take Me - Betty Davis [from Betty Davis]

she sure does come on strong
no stadiums
low ceilinged dimly lit clubs only
strobes in use

Concerto for Piano, Flute, and Strings (midi) - Keith Eisenbrey

muddy voice leading
trying to be dense like Brahms is

the tempos aren't well chosen
for this version
without a clear idea of what all that density ought to be doing

Epicenter Wire Can - Doug Siedel [from Bard Sampler 82-83]

unity of affect:
transgress respectfully
though
I may have simply mis-dissected the tape tracks
when I dubbed it

moving from affect to affect
how baroque

Banned Rehearsal 154 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [September 20, 1988]

we begin
by being people in a room
then
the what
that might be music
steps from behind the curtain
or
there they are
and have begun immediately
upon our attention
having found them
we were
with them
just as
they had begun
there is no such
when
as
a pre-beginning when

our musical nature
is our nature
better or worse

playing the big red bag of rattles
the ghost saxophone
tells the saxosaxophone
what to play
repeat after me

piano has a moment
so takes another

alarms are raised
bells are banged
minor second between big banged octaves
then
a persistent note
really hangs in there

spewing dramatic declamation
up and down

planes overhead
while the tin can drum kit carries on bravely
to the fife ftooting

our toy sounds

several ways to overpower the recording mechanism
beyond its optimal fidelity to the signal

lemon scented tea

the plane is flying to the moon

quick
quick quawk
quick quawk
quawk quick

and so further

little bits of flavor

Supercharged - Black Cat Orchestra [from Dante's Inferno Live Score]

high brow
low theater

Track 5 - Students of Joan Schoepflin [June 9, 1998]

music to make the pianist feel good about themselves
or to make the music believable to them

Blunderbuss - Scurvy Bastards [from Battle Born]

drum the decking
with heels a-stomping

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Zither Film 32 - Keith Eisenbrey [November 30, 2008]

slices of highway traffic
images flash past
we are aimed
out of town

the traffic image flashes
thin out
unevenly
accidentally

as a project
though the project was always
a process
with a particular goal
the preponderance of sound
associated with the project
is not
the totality
of the envisioned goal's sound
but
the sound
of the intervening
constituent
pre-totality
steps

I find it to be instructive
as a fellow
who listens to lots of music
to listen
as intently
to nothing at all
for stretches of time
now and then

Dizzy - Lures [from Dizzy]

supermall secret agent man
with imposter syndrome

Banned Rehearsal 966 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [September 10, 2018]

we arrive like a fog
revealed at first light
we skitter across the glassy surface
tiny winged creatures
on tiny winged business

we are less a band
than we are
an occasional ecosystem

Mutes and Whispers - Tom Varner, Neil Welch [from Out of the Mud]

a quiet moment

Clarinet Marmalade - Ted Lewis [from That Devilin' Tune]

circus act number
arranged to be taken in
as an audience
as opposed to
for social dancing
a slant

A Dear John & Martha Letter - Stan Freberg [from The Very Best of Stan Freberg]

meta-epistolary
with comments from the peanut gallery

more husky in the ferland

One Fine Day - The Chiffons [collected from Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock & Soul]

a note sent across a romantic divide
keep the sentiment simple

The Two Lonely People - Bill Evans [from Alone]

chopinesque
elusive polyphony

Morning Glow - Michael Jackson [from Music & Me]

the child star
is a kind of a freak show
public display
of what is not intended
to ever sound
like a natural thing
for a kid
to be doing

Lonesome Valley - Lawrence Eller, Vaughn Eller, Ross Brown [from The Art of Field Recording]

an old tune
with fine old bones

5 Movements: November 22, 1983 - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded April 21, 2010]

this is the one
that is shaped like an eye
it roves restlessly
within a circumscribed pitch register
just a few places to stand

fluctuations in the resonating pitches
follow curved paths
sensually present

A Christmas Medley [from Joy To The World]

medley:
a box of ornaments
for the properly trimmed
Better Homes and Gardens
Tree
or
AnyCenter Mall

most Xmas rated
Xmas dreams

Sourdough Ridge Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Back/This Time - Janet Jackson [from Janet]

our personal remove
from the parts of the music
is to overwhelm
but
the parts
are individually interchangeable

we dance
to our romantic troubles
with uncalled-for operaticisms

is that supposed
to high up
its tone?
and theremin
or the like
must have been quite the stage spectacular
as music
it tires

Sweeter Than The Flowers - James King [from Bed By The Window]

ancestor worship
remembrance
heaven
as the domicile of the departed
long form epitaph

Hey Hey Hey - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [from Summer Songs/Winter Mix] [November 26, 2003]

each element
is in a place
strange to the others
the mechanical part
is there to demonstrate
how
not mechanismical
the other part is

Knee Socks - Tea Cozies [from Tea Cozies]

lines of observation
lines of analysis

Shouldn't Be So Easy - The Hunting Club [from Holiday Beach]

just as I am
without one plea
I plead

Army of Me - Christina Aguilera [from Lotus]

my battle hymn of defiance

Book of Windows - Keith Eisenbrey [from Keith Eisenbrey 2: 1982-1983]

the word
all
begins
with an intake of breath
and
in we plunge

my response
to Gertrude Stein's
Lucy Church Amiably

ingenuity
is a mode
of skill/art/craft/creativity

Avon - Keith Eisenbrey

Gradus 424 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

except for the third B up
then
including the third B up
we didn't have the first time

what is the relation
between the facts
of the announcement
and the facts
of the action
that ensues

a key is struck
and a note ensues

if the piece is designed
as a design of notes
possibilities for keypresses
then
is the luscious shine
of harmonic moil
not
part of the design
and thus
not part
of the same layer
of what the piece is
as
the design of notes?

or
is the design
a means
of optimal exploration
of that harmonic moil?

the lines press the dough
into the bowl

oh so close!
just a few little things I want to do differently

Figure Studies 2015-2018
Autoheterophony 2016

***

In this volume is collected the latest in a series of solo piano improvisations made between 2015 and 2018, as well as a 2016 hymnody project in which I engaged with four hymns that have been familiar to my ear before I knew what music was.

recordings of my compositions (and more!) can be found at keitheisenbrey.bandcamp.com - free to download or stream
