Preface

"For one subsequently cited as an apostle of capitalist virtues, Franklin took a strikingly socialistic view of property. 'All property, indeed, except the savage's temporary cabin, his bow, his match-coat, and other little acquisitions absolutely necessary for his subsistence, seems to me to be the creature of public convention,' he wrote. Laws and customs made accumulation of property possible; the public therefore had the right to regulate the quantity and use of property. 'All the property that is necessary to a man for the conservation of the individual and the propagation of the species is his natural right, which none can justly deprive him of; but all the property superfluous to such purposes is the property of the public, who by their laws have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it whenever the welfare of the public shall demand such disposition.' Needless to say, this was hardly a universal opinion among a people who had fought a war over taxes. But Franklin was unmoved. 'He that does not like civil society on these terms, let him retire and live among savages.'"

H. W. Brands, from The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin

Lost Canon No. 1 - S. Eric Scribner [from Sketches: Electronic Music]

the reed drone sound
throws the piano sound
into soft relief
its plain edges buffed

Nocturne in B-flat Major (#5) - John Field - Benjamin Frith

as we hear this melody
it seems that we remember it
moment by moment
its memory returns

where heard we it before
why
just then
as we remember it

a thing built within memory
prompted by notes going by

Die Rose, S. 556/1 (After Schubert, D. 745) - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

Liszt transcribed at a hat's drop
as part of an exploration
into the inner workings of melody

in this one
he extemporizes wildly
but no more so
than many a jazz pianist does
to a simple show tune
Art Tatum and Tea for Two

learned through his hands

Sonata in F minor, Op. 14 - Robert Schumann - Vladimir Horowitz

the so-called Concerto Without Orchestra
and it does play groups of figurations off against each other
in concertante fashion

it isn't about the bravura
which this also has
but
at the beck and call
of a wild poetry

Horowitz was criticized somewhat
for veering from the straight and narrow
of sticking to a steady tempo
into
a rubato
that distorted the structure of the rhythm

I just don't hear that

but these rhythms he plays
make a meter outside strict time
it doesn't exist to serve the page
it illuminates aspects of Schumann's sophisticated sense of motion

I was fortunate as a teen to hear Horowitz play this live

Pas des echarpes, 3me air de ballet, Op. 37 - Cecile Chaminade - Mark Viner

not much to distract
from its through-line of notes
but a clearly drawn music

Norwegian Peasant Dances, Op. 72: No. 2, Jon Væstafæ's Springar - Edward Grieg - Håkon Austbø

a snapshot of a characteristic demotic rhythm
(characteristic to a national identity)

2 Poèmes: Fantastique, Op. 71 #1 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

much to distract
from any direct through-line it may project

an ephemeral region

Heah Me Talkin' To Ya - Louis Armstrong and His Savoy Ballroom Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

the beat kept by the drums
is just the sound of the tune's feet dancing

Of Thee I Sing (Incomplete) - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin]

the orchestra is a strictly professional outfit
no showboating that might suggest a reason
not to focus on the star-voice

This Boy - The Beatles [from The Beatles Anthology]

montage ready

How About Me - Rusty Dedrick Orchestra [from Irving Berlin All By Myself: Notable Compositions 1926-1933]

this orchestra plays like an all-star orchestra
being a professional orchestra

that trombone player plays like he means it

Lucky Star (New Mix) - Madonna [from Madonna

dance instruction
latest moves
latest styles

this orchestra plays like a machine

a dance is an enclosed time

remains OK with being strangely formed

Lydia - King's Singers [from Chanson d'amour]

this music doesn't bite
but caresses with casual suggestiveness

Waiting Game - Goodness [from Goodness 1995-1998]

each line has a space for the singing to happen
and a space for the band to respond
and articulate structural aspects

Daddy - Beyoncé [from Dangerously In Love]

story told at several layers of lifted (and unlifted) voice

fancy Father's Day card
sung prose

Boys Boys Boys - Lady Gaga [from The Fame]

Caça ao Lobisomen - Camarones Orquestra Guitarrística [from O Curioso Caso da Música Invisível]

Side A Outtro - Unattributed [from Dirt Cult Records: You Don't Have To Be Cool]

a brief message from our compilators

Wonder Why - Bill Evans [from Some Other Time]

the song's presence
finds itself among a jostling of times
all propelled along in a common flow

Walk On By - The Stranglers [from Nancy's Mix]

the guitar tech wants us to hear
the oh so specific distortion on the track
so he gives it a couple of bars to itself

everybody gets a solid solo verse or two

"...out of the air..." - Elaine Barkin - Georgina Dobree [from Open Space 34]

synth and basset horn
spacious but enclosed
interactive in a believably conversational mode
these sounds play for each other

Preface

"Tyranny is so generally established in the rest of the world that the prospect of an asylum in America for those who love liberty gives general joy, and our cause is esteemed the cause of all mankind. Slaves naturally become base as well as wretched. We are fighting for the dignity and happiness of human nature. Glorious it is for the Americans to be called by Providence to this post of honour. Cursed and detested will everyone be that deserts or betrays it."

Benjamin Franklin (ca. 1776/1777), quoted  in The First American, The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, by H. W. Brands

a romance is a story
with a before a during and an after

these pieces
are each
a little romance
in one
or a few
ponds

or
one could concoct
a connecting narrative
returning characters and all

power moves
for strong young arms

these triadic harmonies
are not chords
they are voicings
in motion or in stillness

Lyric Pieces, Book IV, Op. 47 - Edvard Grieg - Håkon Austbø

their lack of pretense
they don't sweat greatness
tying clever knots
fond of variously decorated stepwise descending lines

June 30, 2026

Études de concert, Op. 57 #1 - Agathe Backer Grøndahl - Sara Aimée Smiseth

focus on a single narrow figuration field
rarely straying much below middle C
even after the possibility is opened
such straying moments
function as articulation points

August - PJ Harvey [from I Inside The Old Year Dying]

the same sound might be described
as a discordant noise
or as a particular texture of pitch feel

the voice
then
explores by means of singing
touching its parts

Spiral II - Karlheinz Stockhausen

a mathematical construct
and a metaphor
and some wiggly electronic sounds
meet
in the backrooms
of a radio cabaret
after hours
sampling
what was left in the glasses

why yes
this is Sgt. Pepper's Stockhausen

a shot rings out
or a sharp slap
and a second

having a laugh
with the resident rodents

do I not hear Stockhausen's piece if
 I fail to distinguish
either construct
or metaphor
in it?
and
if it wasn't his piece
what was it?

Fly/Yoohoo - J. K. Randall, Matthew Rosenblum, Marjorie Tichenor, Daniel Warner [from Inter/Play]

this comes in
as though they had already been at it
for some time

four musicians
place their sounds
on the head of a pin

fasten your seat belts
it can get crowded

but they hang on

the world outside the pin's head
has silenced

Inter/Play was a series of cassette tapes
distributed by J. K. Randall
(and then with Ben Boretz)
of the session recordings of the 80s
each cassette
had two sides
and for years
they were arranged in my head
and in my cassette cabinet
as in the order thus distributed
but
that order

does not match the order
in which the recordings were recorded

now
they are arranged
in a computer folder
alphabetically
and in my database
they are arranged
chronologically
by the date of their doing

in my head
they're humble jumble
in their idea space

Wild Leaves - Patti Smith [from Dream of Life]

eyes locked

in dreams
of past pleasures
past shames

delayed rhyme line
reference by primary source
fair use

...where murmurs die... - Bernard Rands - American Symphony Orchestra, Leon Botstein]

a music of wisps
and broad colorful gestures
long lines
of art deco reclining figures

this music has nowhere to go
which is realized
at length

it thrives in fetid swamps

Deep Purple - Glenn Tate [from Days of Wine and Roses]

a melody that folds through itself
then a fine dance

a whole production number
costume changes and everything

Missa Tirnaviensis - Stanislav Surin - Trnavsky Komorny Orchester, Milan Krupcik

ceremonial and solemn
but not bloated
frugal

I've actually sung the Gloria
(and met Mr. Surin!)
as part of the University Temple Chancel Choir
I think I even have a picture

he has an interesting ear for rhythm

Keith Eisenbrey 33: Sabbatical Improvisations (part 4) 2014

In 2013 I had reached an inflection point in my big project, Études d'exécution imminent, and took a sabbatical (indifferently observed) from composing written-down music. I filled the time with various forms of improvisation, both "in-the-moment" composing, and sometimes puttering about with multi-tracking and other digitally applied effects. Here is the fourth bunch of them.

Preface

"ODE TO THE SEA:
(WITH INTERRUPTIONS).

Written on Margate sands, by Miss Belinda Bucklersbury.

Oh! lovely Sea; sweet daughter of the sky!
To thee I pour my soul: on thee I cry:
Oh! let some sister Naiad float this way,
Lend me her wand, then 'mid the waves I'll stray.

[Here you are, my lady, Bathe you for a shilling. Comfortablest machine on the beach; and no hextry charge for soap and towels.]

Oh! for the merry sea-bird's wind, to fly
To where yon sunny cloud floats in the sky,
And seems a fairy palace built of light,
A happy home, where all is gay and bright.

[Try a donkey, ma'am. He'll carry you as quiet as a lamb, and nuffink von't tire him.]

Ocean! how strange, how wondrous strange thy power,
At morning's dawn, or glowing sunset hour!
Ev'n now my heart earth's narrow bounds hath pass'd;
My swelling brain for its cribbed cell's too vast.

[Take a pair o' sculls, ma'am. I'll row you a mile out and a mile in for half-a-crown; and there aint a trimmer little craft in all Margate, than 'Moll o' Wapping.']

All sweet emotions on thy shores abound:
All gentle passions gentler here are found.
'Twas here first sprang to life bright Beauty's Queen;
Nurtured and cradled on thy billows green.

[Buy a Wenus's ear, Miss? or a box o' powder to perwent sea-sickness? Only von and sixpence the lot.]

Here soothing thoughts come borne on zephyr's wing,
And round the heart, like summer flowers, spring,
Sweet thoughts of love, that all thoughts else control,
And in one mighty passion bind the soul.

[Here's a prime box o' smuggled cigars, Miss, for your sweetheart! or a nice little keg o' rale French brandy, for yourself! Let you have 'em a bargain.]

While yet a child, Ocean, I loved to stand
Gazing and list'ning on thy pebbly strand;
And, even now, the song I seem to hear--
The mariner's song, to my young heart so dear.

[Yoi-hoi! -- Yoi-ee-ho! -- Yow! -- Yoi-ee-hey! -- Eiugh? -- Yoi-oi! -- Oi-yoi! -- Ee-ow-oi-yo hough! &c. &c.]

Oh! mighty, wondrous world; what fearful forms
Of giant force thou nursest in thy storms!
Here pond'rous whales 'mid crashing icebergs stray;
There vast leviathans with tempests play.

[Here's your perriwinkles! penny a pint! Winkle-winkle-winkle-winkle-winkle-man! Fine fresh winkles only a penny a pint!]

Behold, along the beach, these beauteous shells!
In each, I ween, some ocean-spirit dwells:
Pluck we the first. It's pearly depths behold!
What hues of crimson, em'rald, azure, gold!

[Oh! crikey, Bill; vot a conch that lady's got!]

Alas! I'm but a hapless child of earth;
I cannot stray where syren songs of mirth
Are heard in coral bowers with pearls bedight;
On me sweet Fortune never smiled so bright!

[Try your luck, marm, in the Lottery! A musical box, two paper nautiluses, and a piece of the wreck of the Royal George. Only von shilling a ticket, and only two numbers wacant.]

Ofttimes at eve, when the pale moon shines clear,
And soft winds sigh, those notes I seem to hear;
Ev'n now, methought I heard the magic strain,
Oh! syren, sing that well-known song again!

[Nix, my Dolly, pals, fake away -- Ni-ix, my Dolly, pals, fake away.]

But, oh! a weight oppresses my sad soul;
My spirits sinks beneath its dread control.

[EASE HER! Ease her!]

Thy boiling waves my daring footsteps spurn;
To earth again in grief I'm forced to turn.

[HALF TURN ASTARN! -- Half turn astarn! GO ON! Go on!]

Farewell! farewell! though I could stay and gaze
On thy bright tide, sweet Sea, for endless days;
but earthly voices call me to the shore,
I must away; fare -- fare-thee-well once more!

(In a very small voice, half a mile off.)

[Holloa, marm, you can't get back! you've let the tide come up all roun you, and if you attempt to stir you're a drownded woman. Stop where you are, and hold fast by your camp-stool till the man comes; and he'll bring you ashore wery comfortable on his back for half-a-crown.]"

Someone's Coming - The Who [from Magic Bus]

this album

Keith Eisenbrey 31: Sabbatical Improvisations (part 2) 2014

In 2013 I had reached an inflection point in my big project, Études d'exécution imminent, and took a sabbatical (indifferently observed) from composing written-down music. I filled the time with various forms of improvisation, both "in-the-moment" composing, and sometimes puttering about with multi-tracking and other digitally applied effects. Here is the second bunch of them.
