Preface

"ODE TO THE SEA:
(WITH INTERRUPTIONS).

Written on Margate sands, by Miss Belinda Bucklersbury.

Oh! lovely Sea; sweet daughter of the sky!
To thee I pour my soul: on thee I cry:
Oh! let some sister Naiad float this way,
Lend me her wand, then 'mid the waves I'll stray.

[Here you are, my lady, Bathe you for a shilling. Comfortablest machine on the beach; and no hextry charge for soap and towels.]

Oh! for the merry sea-bird's wind, to fly
To where yon sunny cloud floats in the sky,
And seems a fairy palace built of light,
A happy home, where all is gay and bright.

[Try a donkey, ma'am. He'll carry you as quiet as a lamb, and nuffink von't tire him.]

Ocean! how strange, how wondrous strange thy power,
At morning's dawn, or glowing sunset hour!
Ev'n now my heart earth's narrow bounds hath pass'd;
My swelling brain for its cribbed cell's too vast.

[Take a pair o' sculls, ma'am. I'll row you a mile out and a mile in for half-a-crown; and there aint a trimmer little craft in all Margate, than 'Moll o' Wapping.']

All sweet emotions on thy shores abound:
All gentle passions gentler here are found.
'Twas here first sprang to life bright Beauty's Queen;
Nurtured and cradled on thy billows green.

[Buy a Wenus's ear, Miss? or a box o' powder to perwent sea-sickness? Only von and sixpence the lot.]

Here soothing thoughts come borne on zephyr's wing,
And round the heart, like summer flowers, spring,
Sweet thoughts of love, that all thoughts else control,
And in one mighty passion bind the soul.

[Here's a prime box o' smuggled cigars, Miss, for your sweetheart! or a nice little keg o' rale French brandy, for yourself! Let you have 'em a bargain.]

While yet a child, Ocean, I loved to stand
Gazing and list'ning on thy pebbly strand;
And, even now, the song I seem to hear--
The mariner's song, to my young heart so dear.

[Yoi-hoi! -- Yoi-ee-ho! -- Yow! -- Yoi-ee-hey! -- Eiugh? -- Yoi-oi! -- Oi-yoi! -- Ee-ow-oi-yo hough! &c. &c.]

Oh! mighty, wondrous world; what fearful forms
Of giant force thou nursest in thy storms!
Here pond'rous whales 'mid crashing icebergs stray;
There vast leviathans with tempests play.

[Here's your perriwinkles! penny a pint! Winkle-winkle-winkle-winkle-winkle-man! Fine fresh winkles only a penny a pint!]

Behold, along the beach, these beauteous shells!
In each, I ween, some ocean-spirit dwells:
Pluck we the first. It's pearly depths behold!
What hues of crimson, em'rald, azure, gold!

[Oh! crikey, Bill; vot a conch that lady's got!]

Alas! I'm but a hapless child of earth;
I cannot stray where syren songs of mirth
Are heard in coral bowers with pearls bedight;
On me sweet Fortune never smiled so bright!

[Try your luck, marm, in the Lottery! A musical box, two paper nautiluses, and a piece of the wreck of the Royal George. Only von shilling a ticket, and only two numbers wacant.]

Ofttimes at eve, when the pale moon shines clear,
And soft winds sigh, those notes I seem to hear;
Ev'n now, methought I heard the magic strain,
Oh! syren, sing that well-known song again!

[Nix, my Dolly, pals, fake away -- Ni-ix, my Dolly, pals, fake away.]

But, oh! a weight oppresses my sad soul;
My spirits sinks beneath its dread control.

[EASE HER! Ease her!]

Thy boiling waves my daring footsteps spurn;
To earth again in grief I'm forced to turn.

[HALF TURN ASTARN! -- Half turn astarn! GO ON! Go on!]

Farewell! farewell! though I could stay and gaze
On thy bright tide, sweet Sea, for endless days;
but earthly voices call me to the shore,
I must away; fare -- fare-thee-well once more!

(In a very small voice, half a mile off.)

[Holloa, marm, you can't get back! you've let the tide come up all roun you, and if you attempt to stir you're a drownded woman. Stop where you are, and hold fast by your camp-stool till the man comes; and he'll bring you ashore wery comfortable on his back for half-a-crown.]"

to observe
the making of music

Keith Eisenbrey 31: Sabbatical Improvisations (part 2) 2014

In 2013 I had reached an inflection point in my big project, Études d'exécution imminent, and took a sabbatical (indifferently observed) from composing written-down music. I filled the time with various forms of improvisation, both "in-the-moment" composing, and sometimes puttering about with multi-tracking and other digitally applied effects. Here is the second bunch of them.

Walla Walla, WA
Preface

"It has been said that the whale only breathes through his spout-hole; if it could truthfully be added that his spouts are mixed with water, then I opine we should be furnished with the reason why his sense of smell seems obliterated in him; for the only thing about him that at all answers to his nose is that identical spout-hole; and being so clogged with two elements, it could not be expected to have the power of smelling. But owing to the mystery of the spout - whether it be water or whether it be vapor - no absolute certainty can as yet be arrived at on this head. Sure it is, nevertheless, that the Sperm Whale has no proper olfactories. but what does he want of them? No roses, no violets, no Cologne-water in the sea."

Herman Melville, from Moby-Dick; or, The Whale.

Full Album Stream - Princess [from Selling Sulphur]

so
this album
which I purchased as computer files
came with a 20+ minute track
called Full Album Stream*
a method of enforcing the notion
that one needs to hear the whole at once
to be properly informed
of its worthiness

this music front
is angry sounding
though the backing singers
sing with less show of rage

B A C  H motive
as an introductory riff
off the shelf

the character of the lead vocal
is kept somewhat in the back of the sound
a guitar band
with someone shouting from behind them

*conjunction
of the notion of an album
(an object)
and a stream
(a flow of signal)
both are methods of ordering listening
an old one
and a new

it sounds like the shouty fellow
is trying to tell a story
there are those backing singers again
like hooded priests
of some woo woo cult

hey!
a bookends structure
like Simon & Garfunkel's!
even goes sort of symphonic
for the finish

Barn Wall - Keith Eisenbrey [May 5, 2018]

at my brother's property
out in the woods above Greenbank
on Whidbey Island
waiting for him with my folks
to help with a project involving a barn wall

the sound of an arriving vehicle
stuff is banged about with excellent clankiness

an airplane splutters overhead

waiting for big brother

an engine is started
we are coordinating our task
we are subsumed within the engine sound
occasional power tool scream
pounding nails

the engine noise
has two clear pitch areas
a low and a high

our task has been completed

Track 3 - Star Anna - [from Love Shades, streamed February 14, 2023]

shout outs and tuning
and one of those songs

Sonatas and Interludes: Sonata X - John Cage - Boris Berman

repetitions of figuration segments
ratios of durations of musics
by either clock time
or count of beats
or measures
encounter a problem
in our experience of them
as they go by
the content
affects our experience
of duration
rendering it
unmeasurable
irrationalizable

we make me smile

it was the door

now everybody play duets
in all directions

full of surprises

we make a symphony
by listening
to ourselves
making it

{journal entry of October 23, 2006:

what is the tolerance of simultaneity?
is our scale flexible?
milliseconds
in some cases
and hours/years
in others?

is it a function of perception
memory
or perception
of memory?

this music proceeds
with multiple agendi
each a distinct complex of time shapes

once I have processed a new thing
its precise placement on the timeline
is conjectural

stable periodic ritmas
are regimental
assisting the perception
of when events occur
within a sequence
but
what if
events occur
in fuzzy sequence?
in parallel
or oblique sequences
at various con-/per-ception distances from each other?
does the complexity
of the incoming signal
or
our conception/perception
of that complexity
alter
or fuzz
our psychological ability
to keep all events
in received sequence?
received where?
at the eardrum?
at awareness?
do different species of sound complexes
arise to awareness
at different rates?
or
is our internal mixer
less than perfectly able to track multiple periodicities
or multiple species of a-periodicities?

given:
a span is required
for the apprehension of a sound
as a sound
this can be explained
pre-psychologically
by the physical nature
of what a sound is
i.e. a wave
(presumption here
is that in order to apprehend sound
it must be stimulated
by the eardrum
and psychological apparatus
we could
I suppose
apprehend a sound a-sensually)

there is a time lag
between the excitement of the eardrum

Music of Benjamin Boretz
Keith Eisenbrey, piano

The music of Benjamin Boretz, which I first encountered as an undergraduate, has played a central role in my own sense of musical possibility and depth ever since. I was deeply fortunate to study with him for a few years in the early 80s, and have been blessed with his ongoing friendship and conversation since that time. It is my distinct pleasure to share these recordings with you now.

Playlist

dabbling - Seward Park, Seattle
Preface

"Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure. Consider also the devilish brilliance and beauty of many of its most remorseless tribes, as the dainty embellished shape of many species of sharks. Consider, once more, the universal cannibalism of the sea; all whose creatures prey upon each other, carrying on eternal war since the world began."

Herman Melville, from "Moby-Dick; or, The Whale."

The Lucifer Project - Goat [from Special Agent]

Gradus 228 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [June 17, 2013]

what now does silence signify?
it signifies
an intention
to invoke
a mode
of listening

what one can hear
is trivial
what one listens to
and hears
is all that music is made of

the notes
say things to each other
passing information packets
the information
changes
with each passing
they compare results

is the mode of listening
invoked by silence
within music
a separate mode
or a submode
of listening?

the problem
with metronomic pulse
is that
metronomes
are under the impression
that all seconds
are the same length

Dear Beer - The Bombpops [from Dear Beer]

the engineered sound

Madrigals, Book IV: Sí ch'io vorrei morire - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

music such as this

as much

provisional thought

1
folk legend opening
atmosphere of adventure and romance
we meet our hero first

acclamation and fanfare
finally
in the flesh
busy preparations
determination
sets
in their chin
but
they love their mother
as the horn had informed us
the distance homeward
sinks in
but
some lands
are enough like theirs
to encourage

2

Shouldn't We Talk III - J. K. Randall [from Open Space 19]

within its clock grid tolerance
rhythms and notes
can be produced accurately
as intended
even sampled sound
can only be produced
within
a carapace
of their recorded space
the gathered bodies
of their mutual presence
is absent
from the recorded trace

with a question
what
is the social function
of this music?
the sounds produced
don't appear to have one

objects of discussion
thought provokement

Yu Feng: Seven Fugues for Toy Piano - Aaron Keyt - Aaron Keyt [from Wake - Yu Feng - Improvisation]

<a,b> - Keith Eisenbrey - MFA Composer's Workshop [recorded at Bard College, July 18, 1983]

I don't remember exactly what my score/prompt was for this
something to do with refracted decay patterns I think
an image I had
of a flavor of rhythm

what comes out on this end
is the sound of multiple agents
making independent rhythm shapes
the whole
is the texture
of those shapes
across their terrain

lots of great sounding percussion

in the deep background
the sounds of the café
at the end of the common area

I might have had us partner up
one agent to initiate
the start of the refracted shape
and other
to enact it
{hence the ordered pair <a,b>}

mournful monochord

such procedures
succeed at producing things
but
is it a thing
that needs to be produced
by anybody
for their own use?

to me?:
perhaps
the idea of building textures
from discrete bits
underlies Music as a Film
and the rhythm textures
of the final results
have a family resemblance

these ducks are getting agitated

Rockhouse - Roy Orbison [from For the Lonely: 18 Greatest Hits]

build tension

Nocturnes or Discourses (Pre-Mix) - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded by Tom Stiles, December 2, 1993]

triangulating pitch
in its space

footing
posture
gesture

in terms of the project
this
is the recording of the sounds I made into the room
(Brechemin late at night)
what isn't there
is the score/stimulus
which was
what was playing
in my headphones

for the first few minutes
this {the score/stimulus}
was silence
after that
what I was responding to
was a playback
of the recording I had just made
the idea being
that the whole
would be
my sequential response
to that initial silence
and then
my response
to that response
the mix
was the score/stimulus

the final mix
was essentially
what I was hearing
as I was playing
like a long tape loop

One of the shining lights of the local music scene during the pandemic lockdown was Nonsequitur's Wayward in Limbo series: 134 commissioned recordings of new work by local musicians. I was honored to be asked for a contribution. The essential intimacy of the clavichord seemed fitting for the occasion, and I offer this series of short improvisations for your enjoyment.
