Preface

"For one subsequently cited as an apostle of capitalist virtues, Franklin took a strikingly socialistic view of property. 'All property, indeed, except the savage's temporary cabin, his bow, his match-coat, and other little acquisitions absolutely necessary for his subsistence, seems to me to be the creature of public convention,' he wrote. Laws and customs made accumulation of property possible; the public therefore had the right to regulate the quantity and use of property. 'All the property that is necessary to a man for the conservation of the individual and the propagation of the species is his natural right, which none can justly deprive him of; but all the property superfluous to such purposes is the property of the public, who by their laws have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it whenever the welfare of the public shall demand such disposition.' Needless to say, this was hardly a universal opinion among a people who had fought a war over taxes. But Franklin was unmoved. 'He that does not like civil society on these terms, let him retire and live among savages.'"

H. W. Brands, from The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin

Lost Canon No. 1 - S. Eric Scribner [from Sketches: Electronic Music]

the reed drone sound
throws the piano sound
into soft relief
its plain edges buffed

Nocturne in B-flat Major (#5) - John Field - Benjamin Frith

as we hear this melody
it seems that we remember it
moment by moment
its memory returns

where heard we it before
why
just then
as we remember it

a thing built within memory
prompted by notes going by

Die Rose, S. 556/1 (After Schubert, D. 745) - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

Liszt transcribed at a hat's drop
as part of an exploration
into the inner workings of melody

in this one
he extemporizes wildly
but no more so
than many a jazz pianist does
to a simple show tune
Art Tatum and Tea for Two

learned through his hands

Sonata in F minor, Op. 14 - Robert Schumann - Vladimir Horowitz

the so-called Concerto Without Orchestra
and it does play groups of figurations off against each other
in concertante fashion

it isn't about the bravura
which this also has
but
at the beck and call
of a wild poetry

Horowitz was criticized somewhat
for veering from the straight and narrow
of sticking to a steady tempo
into
a rubato
that distorted the structure of the rhythm

I just don't hear that

but these rhythms he plays
make a meter outside strict time
it doesn't exist to serve the page
it illuminates aspects of Schumann's sophisticated sense of motion

I was fortunate as a teen to hear Horowitz play this live

Pas des echarpes, 3me air de ballet, Op. 37 - Cecile Chaminade - Mark Viner

not much to distract
from its through-line of notes
but a clearly drawn music

Norwegian Peasant Dances, Op. 72: No. 2, Jon Væstafæ's Springar - Edward Grieg - Håkon Austbø

a snapshot of a characteristic demotic rhythm
(characteristic to a national identity)

2 Poèmes: Fantastique, Op. 71 #1 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

much to distract
from any direct through-line it may project

an ephemeral region

Heah Me Talkin' To Ya - Louis Armstrong and His Savoy Ballroom Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

the beat kept by the drums
is just the sound of the tune's feet dancing

Of Thee I Sing (Incomplete) - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin]

the orchestra is a strictly professional outfit
no showboating that might suggest a reason
not to focus on the star-voice

This Boy - The Beatles [from The Beatles Anthology]

montage ready

How About Me - Rusty Dedrick Orchestra [from Irving Berlin All By Myself: Notable Compositions 1926-1933]

this orchestra plays like an all-star orchestra
being a professional orchestra

that trombone player plays like he means it

Lucky Star (New Mix) - Madonna [from Madonna

dance instruction
latest moves
latest styles

this orchestra plays like a machine

a dance is an enclosed time
a bubble within experience

this song goes around at least once too many times

remains OK with being strangely formed

Lydia - King's Singers [from Chanson d'amour]

this music doesn't bite
but caresses with casual suggestiveness

Waiting Game - Goodness [from Goodness 1995-1998]

each line has a space for the singing to happen
and a space for the band to respond
and articulate structural aspects

Daddy - Beyoncé [from Dangerously In Love]

story told at several layers of lifted (and unlifted) voice

fancy Father's Day card
sung prose

Boys Boys Boys - Lady Gaga [from The Fame]

Caça ao Lobisomen - Camarones Orquestra Guitarrística [from O Curioso Caso da Música Invisível]

to the out

Side A Outtro - Unattributed [from Dirt Cult Records: You Don't Have To Be Cool]

a brief message from our compilators

Wonder Why - Bill Evans [from Some Other Time]

the song's presence
finds itself among a jostling of times
all propelled along in a common flow

Walk On By - The Stranglers [from Nancy's Mix]

the guitar tech wants us to hear
the oh so specific distortion on the track
so he gives it a couple of bars to itself

everybody gets a solid solo verse or two

"...out of the air..." - Elaine Barkin - Georgina Dobree [from Open Space 34]

synth and basset horn
spacious but enclosed
interactive in a believably conversational mode
these sounds play for each other

Preface

"Tyranny is so generally established in the rest of the world that the prospect of an asylum in America for those who love liberty gives general joy, and our cause is esteemed the cause of all mankind. Slaves naturally become base as well as wretched. We are fighting for the dignity and happiness of human nature. Glorious it is for the Americans to be called by Providence to this post of honour. Cursed and detested will everyone be that deserts or betrays it."

Benjamin Franklin (ca. 1776/1777), quoted  in The First American, The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, by H. W. Brands

a romance is a story
with a before a during and an after

these pieces
are each
a little romance
in one
or a few
ponds

or
one could concoct
a connecting narrative
returning characters and all

power moves
for strong young arms

these triadic harmonies
are not chords
they are voicings
in motion or in stillness

Lyric Pieces, Book IV, Op. 47 - Edvard Grieg - Håkon Austbø

their lack of pretense
they don't sweat greatness
tying clever knots
fond of variously decorated stepwise descending lines

June 30, 2026

Études de concert, Op. 57 #1 - Agathe Backer Grøndahl - Sara Aimée Smiseth

focus on a single narrow figuration field
rarely straying much below middle C
even after the possibility is opened
such straying moments
function as articulation points

a rainbow of girls

August - PJ Harvey [from I Inside The Old Year Dying]

the same sound might be described
as a discordant noise
or as a particular texture of pitch feel

the voice
then
explores by means of singing
touching its parts

Spiral II - Karlheinz Stockhausen

a mathematical construct
and a metaphor
and some wiggly electronic sounds
meet
in the backrooms
of a radio cabaret
after hours
sampling
what was left in the glasses

why yes
this is Sgt. Pepper's Stockhausen

a shot rings out
or a sharp slap
and a second

having a laugh
with the resident rodents

do I not hear Stockhausen's piece if
 I fail to distinguish
either construct
or metaphor
in it?
and
if it wasn't his piece
what was it?

Fly/Yoohoo - J. K. Randall, Matthew Rosenblum, Marjorie Tichenor, Daniel Warner [from Inter/Play]

this comes in
as though they had already been at it
for some time

four musicians
place their sounds
on the head of a pin

fasten your seat belts
it can get crowded

but they hang on

the world outside the pin's head
has silenced

Inter/Play was a series of cassette tapes
distributed by J. K. Randall
(and then with Ben Boretz)
of the session recordings of the 80s
each cassette
had two sides
and for years
they were arranged in my head
and in my cassette cabinet
as in the order thus distributed
but
that order

does not match the order
in which the recordings were recorded

now
they are arranged
in a computer folder
alphabetically
and in my database
they are arranged
chronologically
by the date of their doing

in my head
they're humble jumble
in their idea space

Wild Leaves - Patti Smith [from Dream of Life]

eyes locked

in dreams
of past pleasures
past shames

delayed rhyme line
reference by primary source
fair use

...where murmurs die... - Bernard Rands - American Symphony Orchestra, Leon Botstein]

a music of wisps
and broad colorful gestures
long lines
of art deco reclining figures

this music has nowhere to go
which is realized
at length

it thrives in fetid swamps

Deep Purple - Glenn Tate [from Days of Wine and Roses]

a melody that folds through itself
then a fine dance

a whole production number
costume changes and everything

Missa Tirnaviensis - Stanislav Surin - Trnavsky Komorny Orchester, Milan Krupcik

ceremonial and solemn
but not bloated
frugal

I've actually sung the Gloria
(and met Mr. Surin!)
as part of the University Temple Chancel Choir
I think I even have a picture

he has an interesting ear for rhythm

Keith Eisenbrey 33: Sabbatical Improvisations (part 4) 2014

In 2013 I had reached an inflection point in my big project, Études d'exécution imminent, and took a sabbatical (indifferently observed) from composing written-down music. I filled the time with various forms of improvisation, both "in-the-moment" composing, and sometimes puttering about with multi-tracking and other digitally applied effects. Here is the fourth bunch of them.

recordings of my compositions (and more!) can be found at keitheisenbrey.bandcamp.com - free to download or stream

a figure propagates
through and into
adjacent tonalities

Albumblätter: Fantasietanz, Op. 124 #5 - Robert Schumann - Florian Uhlig

overruns itself

Zwölf Lieder von Robert Franz, S489 - Franz Liszt - Leslie Howard

undulating within its tonality

we hear the rhythm
of a rhyming text

regularity
and the pressures
of singing it
so that
the words mean what they mean
even when
absent residue of textual referentiality
imprinted on the music

4 Piéces: Ironies, Op. 56 #2 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

wiggles like kittens
when they squirm away
snuggles languidly

They All Laughed - Sarah Vaughan [from Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin]

opening serves the function
of a recitative
versus that of an aria

Look She Said - Lake Washington Singers, Betty Eisenbrey, JoAnne Deacon [April 16, 1963]

unaccompanied {NB first part}
and it doesn't sound easy

the track includes several other songs

except this last one
which is much peppier
and plain-spoken

All Alone (What'll I Do?) - Rusty Dedrick Orchestra [from Irving Berlin - All By Myself: Notable Compositions 1926-1933]

waiting for a ring
a ting-a-ling

long opening sequence
before we get

is a poetry of elongated vowels
an explorable groove

spooky scary groove
for party night

The High Priestess - Goat [from Special Agent]

a solemn rite
a solo taken
might explore
a change's odd corners

the groove
functions horizontally
measuring its iteration pattern
out ahead of itself
articulates a segment of experience
regiments it

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park

Art Tatum eat your heart out

Pine Apple Rag - Scott Joplin - E. Power Biggs]

there is a frail connection
between the music of an era

any segment of experience

but any

softly blatting

steel drum metal blossom sound

tuba tube
but with alternate mouth type
or
muted at t'other end

Sweet Sue - Paul Whiteman [from That Devilin' Tune]

fanfare
prelude
curtain rises

Track 1 - Neal Meyer, William Meyer, Yvonne Meyer [from The Karen Tape]

and it is thus
that Karen's arrival
is announced
and memorialed
on tape
into musical history
tidings
to her sister
taking the plastic bag
off the proxy baby
just being born
and already has a manufactured namesake

parceling out the necessary information
in small bites
is that it?
asks Neal
concerning the doll baby
but
the crank helicopter
deflects attention
there is great excitement
concerning the crank helicopter

now we'll have a baby named Karen

called people very far away
that was the bread man

home life in Moline, IL 1963

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park
Adam's Apple - Wayne Shorter [from Wayne Shorter: The Classic Blue Note Recordings]

strategies for entering upon a circular structure
here
the rhythmic structure is assembled
as an orchestrated accumulation
as the cycle repeats
the heat is amended upwards
at each articulation
how then
to get off the train?
open up the persistent heating
with a thinner texture
(sax lets keys take a turn)
the tempo hushes
into a back booth
and we fade
alas

take any old sheet of paper

pedagogic music
whose prime directive
is a particular technique of fingerwork
without any overriding musical interest
good enough composition

A Day In The Life of a Fool - Glenn Tate [from Days of Wine and Roses]

even if one doesn't know the words
one can trace the rhythm of the title
onto nearly every phrase

Tangerine - Solvents [from Manresa Castle]

is what love is
in the color of
(a list of)
articulated with chorus
about being lonely

Thin Ice - No Man's String Band [from Let Truth Be Told]

title at the articulation of the stanza pair
ends in mid air
honest and decisive

The Deal - Greg Campbell, Bill Horist, Dennis Rea, Wally Shoup [from Wally Shoup 2X4tet]

an invocation
a music
can move
as though
it were atop a chord change
without being so
a music
can move
as though through a polyphonic matrix
without doing so

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park

Gradus 389 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [October 16, 2023]

marks on maps
persisting across spans of experience
village of notes
groups of dwellings
relations among dwelling dwellers

if two notes
are struck simultaneously
and we immediately register its twoness
is it necessary
that that twoness
should persist
as a fact
over time
or
might our experience
of the persisting sonority
complicate that twoness
with other Xnesses?
or
is that level confusion?

but
an experienced twoness
can only be compared
to other experienced twonesses

quantity-quality
quantity as a qualia

Preface

"Dear Dolly, I'll thank you to send the cocoa,
And Susan, who brings it, shall take back your boa.--
Pray, tell Doctor Bleed'em I've got a sad cough;
I caught it while watching young Hodge at the plough;
I thought the day fine and was simple enough
My umbrella to leave, so got wet through and through,
For it came down in torrents; your poor aunt was caught
In the rain and I afterwards sat in a draught.
This made me much worse, but experience I bought,
And I'll never more trust to the sunshine and drought!
Well, I made myself dry, and I sat down to tea:
Of the good that it did me you'd form no idea.
But I quite hate the country, the weather's so rough,
So you'll see me, dear, soon in your little borough.
I hope, after all, that my cold will be trivial--
But still you may send me that stuff in the vial--
In the kitchen you'll find it, just over the trough.
Oh, my cough! oh, my cough! it all comes of the plough."

Gradus 146 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [October 20, 2008]

this music is a straight As music
ranking on a scale of merit
in order to make decisions
about the disposition of individuals
but
my internal ranking of individuals
is personal to my use
and so
could hardly
as a raw data point
have any force
outside my own head
without further clarification
either
to persuade
or
to co-ponder

one playing specific notes
to be one doing such a thing
allowing the urge
to be one doing such a thing
to allow one
to do such a thing

the fruits of the urge
are there to hear
but what was the urge about?

does the urge
have a voice
that thinks aloud
in its head?

the mind's ear
and the ear mind
and the differences between them

the ear mind
is the process of hearing
the minds' ear
is thought
as though it was heard
by ear mind

urges want satisfaction
how compromised
is the urge
to be one
playing specific notes?

Tom Selleck Has a Bad Day - Swingset Showdown [from Cymbal of Appreciation]

clever sophomoric humor
relies on the sympathy
of its sophomoric audience

Gradus at the Chapel (Rung 1) - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, July 14, 2018]

my dad had passed away the week before
and I was unable to attend this performance
Steve Scribner was kind enough to forward the recording he had made

when a note is firmly struck
and held while the dampers are cycled on and off
the sound appears to fluctuate in amplitude
or
to decrease amplitude unevenly
across the note's decay
we might say
this fluctuation
is of its envelope
but
it is also
a blossoming/withering pulsation
of its resonating parts
within that envelope
of course
the envelope doesn't exist
as part of the sound
being an abstraction
conceptual in nature

What Did I Do Wrong - William Bell [from Written in Their Soul, The Stax Songwriter Demos]

song pleading for its future

Madrigals, Book VIII: Ardo e scoprir, ahi lasso, io non ardisco - Claudio Monteverdi - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini

a choir is a multiheaded monster
a theatrical composition
of patterns
of
which heads are singing
and when
and with which others

Praeludium in F-sharp minor, BuxWV 146 - Dieterich Buxtehude - Simone Stella

the procession of dignities
this part promises a fiery sermon
was ever final consonance so hardly won?

Maryhill Museum of Art

Es reißet euch ein schreklich Ende, BWV 90 - Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Amsterdam Baroque Choir, Ton Koopman

can't emphasize it
nor repeat it enough
we are being given a talking to
followed by words of some comfort

theological statements
in the form of a dialog between musics

Sonata in D minor, Kk. 294 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

so thorough
each item dispatched
and checked off
nothing left off its proper schedule

Novelletten: leicht und mit Humor, Op. 21 #3 - Robert Schumann - Éric Le Sage

clearly balanced phrases
balanced
by storms and zephyrs

Consolations: Lento, S.171 #3 - Franz Liszt - Beatrice Berrut

the right words
at the right times
the right tenderness
delicate magic

Prelude in G Major, Op. 39 #3 - Alexander Scriabin - Dmitri Alexeev

I'll take his word for it
that it wandered into G
by the end

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo - Louis Armstrong [from Disney Songs the Satchmo Way]

every time he gets to one of the bibbidi-bobbidis
he has rethunked it

Let's Spend the Night Together - David Bowie [from Aladdin Sane]

hyper press tempo
rushes into now

Godspeed - The Patti Smith Group [from Easter]

is the text of words
speaking to the same person
as the affect of the music?
is it necessary
that
it be
if
it is
in this case?

Improvisation 2 - Keith Eisenbrey, Anne McLellan [October 2, 1983]

a flash fiction by Kafka
with string bass plunks

Thank You Girl - The Beatles [from Past Masters 1]

this album came out some 25 years after the song
at a time when their sound
was sounding increasingly dated
not just because of what they're playing
but
in how they were recorded

Sonata in D minor, Op. 108 - Johannes Brahms - Itzhak Perlman [from The Art of Itzhak Perlman]

Brahms's sequiturs don't non
they pivot

follows the snake
through slithery passages

shiftings of figures
as they phase with the meter
leave us uncertain of our ground

these figures are easily distracted
by their own knottiness

True Love is Not Nice - Jonathan Richman [from I'm So Confused]

the particular music of Jonathan
is not well served by production value

Maryhill Museum of Art
Gradus 51 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [September 15, 2003]

a bit of ape bonding
abrasive G show
to get Gradus started
with some low humor
and lowly notes
glottal fricatives

in the tempo of a sleeping dragon

it helps
when thinking about compositonal forming
to have heard many hours of nothing but A naturals

whom or what it helps
is open for discussion

episodes of relations
among notes
a fantasia

Love Game - Lady Gaga [from The Fame]

the trick is to seem to be in command if it all
a rhythm of dancing words
somewhat salacious

Maryhill Museum of Art
Gradus at the Chapel (continued) - Neal Kosály-Meyer -Neal Kosály-Meyer [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, December 14, 2013]

notes sulking in corners
when we hear a note
we want to hear
we turn toward it
a bodily attitude
and attend to it
a mental attitude
we turn our attention
to it

cats' ears and dogs' sniffers

there is now
I understand
quite a bit of coin tossing involved
in the populating of each rung
that's the part of the project
I'm not involved with
and have never witnessed

The Lost - Steve Layton [from The Month of Endings]

immersive cover art is the show

Sinfonia 5 (piano) - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [August 31, 2023]

Johnny Raven - Michael Jackson [from Music & Me]

the reinvention bandwagon
clutching mass relevance within the industry

There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of) (alternate mix) - Sun Ra [from Languidity]

science fiction
outer space
out there in general
the future we inhabit now
by inventing it
all of it
has a flavor profile
within our cultural imaginations
we recognize it instantly
by its spaciness
we don't know
where we're headed
but
we presume
it will be vast and strange

Nobody Told Me - John Lennon & Yoko Ono [from Milk & Honey]

the melody is kind of nowhere
a placeholder

Finnegans Wake, Chapter 1 (end) - James Joyce - Neal Kosály-Meyer [recorded live at Flag Ranch, Wyoming, July 19, 1988]

an chanting episode
the soundwaves are his buffetters
from ears and to ears end
under the sacred roof tree
as shore as you're born
news from the homestead
flirtsome then fluttersome
ever since reading her evening news
the bay for dibbling

alas
cuts off before he was quite finished

Bright Canaan - Robert Shaw Festival Singers [from Amazing Grace]

traditional American hymnody in its concert duds

some late baroque cello-bass duet

Maryhill Museum of Art
Zither Film 20 - Keith Eisenbrey [October 25, 2008]

jump scares

guitar power bands
for guitar power fans
these guys live
were very loud indeed

Gradus at the Chapel, Rung 2 - Neal Kosály-Meyer - Neal Kosály-Meyer [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, July 14, 2018]

outside
the city's night sounds
inside

sonorities with complex possibilities of resolution
require time to process completely

calculating (them)
is an activity
with a start point in time
and an end point in time
but
are we calculating
or doing something else?
observing a musical extension
of possible meaning
or
experiencing it
while observing it

do we experience our observations?
can we express an observation
or only describe it?

3 Vignettes: a fountain backlit by the setting sun - Leanna Keith [from 3 Vignettes]

sneaks up on you
we want to be many flutes

I'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge - Blind Willie Johnson [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

chest singing
lung resonance
lung drum

I Am Loved - Judy Garland [from Judy In Love]

all the glitz and glamor
of a radio soundstage orchestra decor

Hollywood to music: glamor sells

Laughing On The Outside - Aretha Franklin [from Laughing On The Outside

one can blame a great deal
on the invention of the recording studio

to change the space
in which a music happens
is to change the nature of that music

Up Side - ? and the Mysterians [from The Best of ? and the Mysterians]

bright and nimble keyboard sound
theatrical stretto to finish

Yesterday's Music - Etta James [from Etta James]

all the parts of the blues

tease and deny and satisfy
with long guitar solos

settle into these sounds
angklung electric guitar piano
we compose as we go
but resist composition from outside
our as we go composing

angklung has gone guiro
piano has a supplemental zither
guiro blows across a pipe
pipe wanders among the percussion station

furious scribbling guitar
activates angklung and xylophone and rattle

groove monster
can be battled
with constant reinvention

percussion commuted
to the tub bass
and washboard
a low hoot
ushers us out

Gradus at the Chapel (continued) - Neal Kosály-Meyer -Neal Kosály-Meyer [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, December 14, 2013]

listen to a silence
without waiting for it to be broken
listen with the silence
as a companion

the statement
that
this is a Cagean silence
implies
that
there is such a concept
that
such a concept can be applied
as an adequate label
verification not likely
as
the container of the original concept
has passed away
and left only words and scores
known
to be constitutionally inadequate
so
the truth of the statement
being undeterminable
does it make a difference
to our own understanding
of what Cagean silence might be?

Music of J. K. Randall

I had the great good fortune, along with some of my friends from Bard, to spend some time with the late Professor Randall in 1983. Since then his music and writings have occupied a significant position in the virtual symposium of my senior colleagues. Greek Nickel #2 and "...such words as it were vain to close..." were recorded at my home in 2014 and 2016, respectively; the troubadour songs and Greek Nickel #1 at recitals in 2009 and 2012.

1.-13. some old troubadour songs recollected from around 1200 at the piano and interludes (1977-79; 1988):
1. Aimeric de Peguilhan
2. "snorffs & skrudds"
3. Peire Vidal
4. "schwungvoll"
5. Peirol
6. "simple one"
7. Folquet de Marseilla
8. "simple too"
9. Gaucelm Faidit
10. "e-natural"
11. Peire Vidal
12. "mead"
13. Bernard de Ventadorn

14. greek nickel #1 (1979)

15. greek nickel #2 (1979)

16. "...such words as it were vain to close..." (1978)
