Preface

"Wise Penelope said to her in turn:

'If you indeed are a god
and have heard the voice of a god,
do tell me also of that unhappy man -
whether he yet lives
and sees the light of the sun
or whether he is dead in the House of Hades.'

But the tenuous image responded:

'I may not discourse plainly to you of that man,
whether he lives or dies -
it is idle to speak of that which is blowing in the wind.'

So saying, she slipped away
through the door-bolt hole
onto the breath of the wind.
And the daughter of Ikarios arose from her slumber,
and her heart was warmed,
that a dream so vivid should have come out of murky night.
and the wooers departed sailing on the watery ways
meditating frankly
the murder of Têlemachos in their hearts."

Homer - from "The Odyssey", translated by Charles Stein

Texts

Recorded

March 25, 2023

The King's Morisco, Fvb. 247 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

rises from the big opening simultaneity
a new music to finish up
solid and heavy
a massive board

Étude in C Major, Op. 10 #1 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

a heroic bass line and wind in our sails

Herzlich tut mich erfreuen, Op. 122 #4 / B. 50 #1 - Johannes Brahms / Ferruccio Busoni - Wolf Harden

heftig
Deutsche lyricism
so stern

Put 'Em Down Blues - Louis Armstrong's Hot Five [from Hot Fives and Sevens]

introducing our sounds in brief snatches
then the tutti cycles
Louis sings a verse with a piano
then plays a verse with the piano and banjo
the crew joins bit by bit

Sweet Georgia Brown - Django Reinhardt [from That Devilin' Tune]

askew from its origin
shakes himself off
fleet dance moves across the floor

Pastel - Erroll Garner [from Erroll Garner on Dial]

apotheosis of lounge
gentle flirtations

My Romance - Bill Evans [from New Jazz Conceptions]

all of that lounge apotheosifying magic
and poetry besides

I Surrender, Dear (mono version) - Aretha Franklin [from The Electrifying Aretha Franklin]

question for myself:
is a mono track played on a single speaker
different than the same played through two?
must be

Fuel to the Flame - Dolly Parton [from Hello, I'm Dolly]

charisma to burn
technical range that she doesn't flaunt
and a long smooth melodic shape
doesn't get old

You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio - Joni Mitchell [from For The Roses]

melodic line starts high gets lower
with hilly contour
as a long structure

Akanthos - Iannis Xenakis - International Contemporary Ensemble, Steven Schick, Tony Arnold

twists it hard
squeeze dry
reminds me both of Varèse and Partch
by the end we have heard clearly
what each of these instruments sounds like
maybe even a hint of Shostakovich in the clowns
voice as sound
not carrier wave of language only

O, Superman (video) - Laurie Anderson [from Big Science]

cool
ironic
urban
manufactured with questionable intent
the not moving
is too frenetically meaning-riddled

4th of July - X [from See How We Are]

tells a story
with room between each statement to digest

Little Lap Dog Lullaby - Mike, Peggy, and Penny Seeger [from Animal Folk Songs for Children]

a piece of the old weird America

I'm Afraid of Americans (Nine Inch Nails V1 Mix Show Girls Version) - David Bowie [from Earthling]

what is it that they are composing this with?
not notes
that's just the song part of it

Track 5 - The Humidiflyers [from The Humidiflyers Fall 2002]

layers of guitars
a nice hot bath embrace of guitars

Harvest Moon - Head for the  Hills [from Robbers Roost]

string band Americana song

March 26, 2023

Welcome to my planet. I come in peace. - Keith Eisenbrey - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, April 2, 2016]

inexorable as the motions of the planets
in their slow occlusions and revelations

if a type of motion arises from within one field
is it the same type of motion when viewed from the motions of another field?

why yes
there is an elaborate scheme behind all of this
including a few ad hoc rulings that seemed propitious at the time

I could have voiced some of the big chords more clearly
but other than that I'm playing this rather well

Lindsey Haun - Merchant Mariner [from Merchant Mariner]

if REM had been a sea-shanty band
this is them

nicely played violin solo Caitlin!

Banned Telepath 94 Beacon Hill - Steve Kennedy [November 21, 2022]

starlings
a horn
a rev-engine
a jet
but always starlings

starlings travel in large groups and shout a lot

A Duo, Fvb 248 - Giles Farnaby - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

this moves quickly to utter delight
what fun

Doan Lit Satan Git You - Barbour's Plantation Singers [from Really The Blues]

quite the amazing arrangement
a low voice mirrors the piano's rocking bass rhythm
on the title words
(but what he says is "let" and "get")

Embraceable You (Alternate Excerpt) - Charlie Parker [from The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz]

such warm hearted playing

I Don't Want to be Kissed (By Anyone Else But You) - Miles Davis [from Miles Ahead]

a light touch
show off move for the orchestra to end it

Proof Readers - Ornette Coleman [from Ornette!]

a trio of real movers playing simultaneous solos
a trio of them
then four

I Can't Reach You - The Who [from The Who Sell Out]

this song works quite well in its own favor
all the parts are strong and fully composed

Does This Bus Stop on 82nd Street? - Bruce Springsteen [from Tracks]

shooting for the New Jersey Bob Dylan

March 27, 2023

Glad to See You (Live at the Roxy) - Ramones [from Leave Home]

social function
to provide an immersive
inescapable
common experience
within which
physical proximity issues might be jettisoned

Lady Cab Driver - Prince [from 1999]

short burst texture
instruments trade parts of the measures

Banned Sectional 10 AK NM - Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [November 27, 1987]

one more time on pipe organ and piano
bang battle
to fill the space with sound

not all sounds filling a space have the same effect
some sounds fill the space in order to erase themselves
and it
some
to expand the space
and themselves

but again
my listening habits may constitute an abuse of this session
would my experience change if I were to move about here and there?

the sound is a dull and weighty mass
low to the floor
intermittently active from below
but contained and limited

a recorded session
is also a document of a social activity
an artifact or residue
like a photo

March 28, 2023

Lady Radnor's Suite, Sow Menuet - Hubert Parry [from Meditations for a Quiet Evening]

smells like the seat of empire

Rap Game - D12 [from 8 Mile]

drill sergeant
fear of god method
recruitment

Lids Film Layer 2 - Keith Eisenbrey [June 30, 2007]

episodes of bursts of sound
in regular sounding patterns
at a slow heartbeat pace
the episodes are discrete enough to be counted
two so far
the second longer than the first
each episode has several sounds in a 3 burst pattern
some have an internal episodic structure
as sounds come and go

the point of all of which
is to/was to
inquire into how I put patterns together
upon listening
and less
though somewhat
on the relations between designed-in patterns
and experienced patterns

sounds enter suddenly
fade over the course of their bursts
but then stop with an immediacy
now there
now not

the original temporal trajectory
of the original sounds
is preserved here
just chopped into bursts

Care of You - Shannon Stephens [from Pull It Together]

a voice from the arid West
neighbors scattered
wagon rolling rhythm

Banned Rehearsal 939 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [July 17, 2017]

several outs of doors enter by various means
including mere reportage
several pasts are joined after facts
by various means
including reference to yet other pasts
parts of a magic puzzle
the pieces to be combined
at whim
conjure
transparent geometries
and loosen time's through-line

and so enters the free floating Queen of the Night
hopping about in their high end

mosquito solo to close

Slumber Love - Denise Glover [from Dreams of the Butterfly]

if a chord-change cycle is a kind of abstract rhyme scheme
the lyrics and its lines and actual rhymes
can play with and off of it

Alman, Fvb. 249 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

what exactly does traditional mean
in the context of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book?

these pieces were clearly written down in civilized form by somebody

Humpty Dumpty - Frankie Trumbauer [from That Devilin' Tune]

the activity of performing in a dance-orchestra with an able arranger
and consorting with such types
must have
quite naturally
fostered a whole tribe of arrangers for such orchestras

Prelude to a Kiss - Sarah Vaughan [from Swingin' Easy]

she says that "though it's just a simple melody"
even though she sings it with utter fancy

Besame Mucho - The Beatles [from Anthology Volume 1]

cha cha boom
luck of the draw honest

The Turning Point - Nina Simone [from Silk & Soul]

a bit heavy-handed but brief
and from an interesting point of view
and '67 was a time of moralisms

12XU - Wire [from Pink Flag]

each stanza a small set of words
rave up to close
this one is tightly made

Don't Think Twice (It's All Right) - Bob Dylan [from Before The Flood]

his song lyrics really have a problem with women
who waste his precious time

The Russian Creed - Alexander Gretchaninov [from 100 Greatest Classics]

of all the liturgical music that might have made the 100 greatest cut
we get a nearly single-pitched intonation
over a chorale
in Russian
perhaps it was a best-seller
or did they pick up the track cheap
I mean
it's not bad
but it hardly seems to be in the same business as the usual suspects

March 29, 2023

Two Janes - Los Lobos [from Kiko]

the music serves to clarify the telling of the story
by means of clarifying its poetic structure
its lines and stanzas

Violin Sonata in D Major, Op. 9 #3, Tambourin Presto - Jean-Marie Leclair - Henryk Szeryng [from Masters of the Bow]

frippery

Awaiting AGON - Christopher DeLaurenti [from Favorite Intermissions]

sounds rarely attended to
placed on the examining table
the parts become the people who play them
as their own selves
intent on their own doings
without mutual coordination
beyond being on the same stage
in a room
with people
ignoring them
that is
they are not their ensemble until they perform something

Gradus 216 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [October 30, 2012]

every so often a fish will ripple the surface
some closer
some far
some small
some large
moving into a languid dialog
among the shore trees
and their residents

March 30, 2023

Lumber is King - Caheelan Morrison [from Roll Columbia]

conferring information
good or bad news
from the working man's front
what's to find in the region
with some mild agitprop thrown in
for good measure
but now a bit like a museum display

Banned Rehearsal 1064 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Aaron Keyt [November 21, 2022]

it becomes what is discovered emerging from our listening play
Steve's twittering bird mass our cover and ground

our analyzing mind knows
by deduction
that a texture of bird twitters
such as starlings in a bush
is produced by the combination of each individual's sequential twitters
so that
there is
theoretically
a determinate sequence of overlapping twitters
that could be graphed out
there are
after all
a finite number of starlings in the bush
and each can only twitter once at a time
however
it is also clear to the analyzing mind
that our ear hears the twittering as a single sound
fluctuating but stable within its limits
stochastic

there is an impulse within musical culture
one of many
to harness the resources of rhetoric
so as to make it seem
that sequence is clearly discernable
notation in its standard Western practice
serves to codify this graphically
but
it can also be subverted
to evoke a more fluid
wide-angle
notion of sequentiality
either by sheer mass of input (Wagner)
or by playing tricks with memory (Scarlatti)
or by tonal misdirection (Beethoven)
some music
such as this
by means of a multiplicity of temporal vectors
play without apparent concern for such arcana
we could
theoretically
should we wish
transcribe any one instrument's
or agent's
sequential contribution
but
how they fit together isn't important to how we hear it
or
in a Randallian locution -
at some level of interest
it matters
that the sequentiality doesn't matter

A Galliard Ground, Fvb. 250 - William Inglot - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

the long melody is a sequence of developments upon the first figure

Hesitation Blues - Crying Sam Collins [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

this music
though not from nowhere
is
culturally
relatively independent
of urban learnedness
it is clearly intended for its immediate listeners
whether on porch or in cabin
not for posterity
and certainly not to precurse anything

Ain't Misbehavin' - Ray Charles [from The Great Ray Charles]

bass and drums constant
over which a sweet duet and solos
piano and sax
up-tempo after the fancy piano playing
then relax back
and add a trumpet sax flourish
big tutti chord and done

Stop The Music - The Shirelles [from The Shirelles Anthology]

sung as it might have been said
each line fully in character

End of the Night - The Doors [from The Doors]

whammy bar reverberation
stand-in
for altered perception
the walls quiver

Do, Lord, Remember Me - Gospel Supremes [from The Art of Field Recording, Volume 1]

music at the service of the congregants assembled

Death Is a Star - The Clash [from Combat Rock]

wandering around cabaret-land
and narrative

Banned Rehearsal 123 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [December 16, 1987]

funmaker and pipe
full throated
(well, it's almost a pipe organ)
what it lacks in class
it more than makes up for
with the rhythms
that can all be played at once

full use made of cassette tape overdrive

Aaronsbundler March was its highest and best use

tempo amendment
by scrambling the tempo slider
and going from where it lands

mystery chord badge achieved
it had chord buttons like an autoharp
every now and then it got confused
and would invent one of its own
the best kind of AI

that was a note
that was the same note
there it was again

can't play the trumpet
can't sing
I know I know I know I know

the mystery chord is strangely congruent with that cowbell

spirited
the music box played up close
back when it worked

March 31, 2023

On and On - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth [from Mecca and the Soul Brother]

the logical flow in play
twists around through the rhymes
presumably heading in a direction of some sort of sense
like Finnegans Wake does through puns
in both cases I'm mostly lost
more than a line or so in any direction

Yours - Mariah Carey [from Charmbracelet]

cloying
the mix of vowels in the vocal stack
occasionally
nearly
turns interesting

Lids Film Layers 2 & 1 - Keith Eisenbrey [June 30, 2007]

layer 1 is the original spread of episodes
layer 2 is that spread chopped into bursts and folded in thirds
so that each third is overlaid upon the others
this is both those layers

my entire intent
was to find out what it sounded like
upon successive iterations of the process
layer 3 will be/was this chopped in thirds
and folded
to be stacked atop this etc. (?)
OR
layer 3 will be/was
just layer 2 folded in thirds (?)
more likely

fun fact:
the pauses between bursts
were generated digitally
no performer ever actually performed them as pauses

an open book adrift on the sea
for any to find

what's lids about Lids Film?
when I first imagined the piece I was going to use only the sounds of the pot lids suspended from the beam of the Tintinabulary
so I named the project Lids Film in my head
I ended up using more sounds than just those
but the name stuck

what's film about Lids Film?
the idea of constructing a sound frame by frame
similarly to how Brackage made Mothlight

what is said
is a different information type
than how it sounded when said,
id est
words are more than what they sound like
whereas
music is also so
but in a different direction

In Session at The Tintinabulary

March 26, 2023

Sinfonia 6 - Keith Eisenbrey

This one ended up quite different from how I thought it would, but I like it.

Lament for Sarah - Benjamin Boretz

I've been poking at this 1990 composition for a year or so. I'm not yet entirely happy with how my grace-notes are weighted, but mostly this seems on target

March 27, 2023

Banned Telepath 99 Tintinabulary - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt

March 29, 2023

Sinfonia 1 230329 - Keith Eisenbrey

I have been revising this piece for more than a year but I'm done for now. Time to move on.

Banned Telepath 99 South - Steve Kennedy

Banned Rehearsal 1073 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Steve Kennedy, Aaron Keyt

March 31, 2023

Demolition 230331 - Keith Eisenbrey

The tiny old house to the North across our fence was being demolished by a large excavator so I recorded some of the sound
