September 7, 2023

Christoff + Goldston + Icasanio
Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

Christopher Icasanio

four drums
four cymbals
rolling
singing cymbal

high skill development
to require attention
and overwhelm self-consciousness with intent activity
allowing access
to what then comes through
music
a carrier wave
for that which comes through

drawn down into pianissimo

Stefan Christoff, Lori Goldston

gentle souled
lyrical spirit
wisps on the broad back of a sustained sonority
constant immersive embrace
melody only partly described by its notes and rhythms
as much by the care taken

Recorded

September 2, 2023

Focus - St. Rage [completed at The Tintinabulary, Seattle, on November 12, 2017]

the glockenspiel is a nice touch
just a pinch of sparkle dust

Meditation 3 - Sascia Pellegrini [from Meditations]

nearly subaural pitch sonority
beneath slowly shifting tones
with throbs and geigery taps
a miasma and its chemical cloud
and leechings
and seepings
a cell dividing
conflagration threatens
briefly
passes away

Sonata in D Major, K. 311 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Kristian Bezuidenhout

the glow of the strings inter-reverberating
when the dampers are lifted
is a different color of glow
than is heard on a modern piano
with its heavier tauter strings

whether the difference in sound and response
between a period forte-piano and a modern instrument
is more true or not
to what Mozart intended or not
or
to
therefore
what the piece is
assumes
that this
is the goal of performance
it is not
the goal
is to realize the implications of the score
in the realizor's own music-tongue

there is no vitrine capable of containing music
outside those of our own conceptualizations

Études sur un Thème de Beethoven - Robert Schumann - Eric Le Sage

voicing study
launches into outer space
on the thrust of a single chord
the wind blows loose leaves
into ephemeral poems
figure magic
a music or two
converse within the fingerwork
keep in mind
that Beethoven's 7th Symphony
(of the titular Thème de Beethoven)
was a recent piece at the time Schumann did these
- 30 years?
- 1812 to 1832
- just 20!
not so long as all that

chromatic neighbor tones used
to bend the harmony into new forms
poetic harmony flux

Nocturne in C minor, KKIVb/8 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

an ornamental earmind
each moment a new figure

The Tides of Manaunaun - Henry Cowell - Henry Cowell

drum that responds harmonically
in proper motions

Shall We Gather By The River - Charles Ives - Kia Sams, Russ Warner

the harmony debases itself at
"at the throne of God"

some intimate guitar playing
as though for those who sit on porches

Careless Love - Ray Charles [from Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music]

preaching from personal witness
to a late night
lazy
modified
chattanooga choo choo
back rhythm

Brown Eyed Handsome Man - [Nina Simone from High Priestess of Soul]

all those stories
each told from within a tightly held conceit

Labyrinth - Carole King [from Simple Things]

the ping of her voice occupies these production numbers
in an oddly sincere character
new age propaganda

My Love Will Not Let You Down - Bruce Sprinsteen [from Tracks]

cue up my signature E-Street sound
apply on my command

Bad - Michael Jackson [from Bad]

a strut
I had a bad bike
no more

Little Pig - Mike, Peggy, and Penny Seeger [from Animal Folk Songs for Children]

what is a folk song?
a song that has been floating around a population of musicians
originated by someone
changed by others
but
all they remember
is where they heard it
and who had changed it
into what they heard

September 3, 2023

Boundaries 7 - Jarrad Powell [from Natural Selection]

information provided
abstraction of speech

Dungeon Ghost - Goat [from Live at Sonarchy]

adrift on an inland sea
gentle harbor swells
pressure increases
the surface warps
now we're moving forward
with power behind us

it has passed on

hum
idle
keeping the lights on

this music is a being
that comes and goes
gently but certainly

Track 3 - Black Plastic Clouds [recorded live at The Sound Effects Cafe, Seattle, October 26, 2012]

cartoon hero song
donning manliness as a cloak
a manliness-fashion show
for displays of manliness cloaks
a long track with several songs strung together
the way dive bar bands do sometimes

City Life - Steve Layton [from No Answer]

constant motion without progress
plant two just came on line
assimilated
there's plant three
also assimilated
plant four
plant five
all hum along
check the settings
and yes
the biggest whammy
plant seven

Connecting - Jostaberry [from Hello Turbine]

a happy connected land
a song
that is less a musical setting of a poem
than a music upon which poem parts have been pasted

Caprice en forme de Valse in B Major, Op. 2 #5 - Clara Schumann - Susanne Grützmann

the opening starts just like Mahler's fifth
not Clara's fault of course
she got there first
but it jolts just the same
the trumpet calls the dancers to the floor
having fun with repeating action

Baby (demo) - Little Richard [from Here's Little Richard]

apparently something recorded for the studio's files
kept on his permanent record

(Be Careful of) The Stones You Throw - Bob Dylan [from A Tree With Roots]

a collector of songs
who also composed his own
allows songs to inhabit

Gamblin' Man - Bonnie Raitt [from Sweet Forgiveness]

September 4, 2023

Raisins and Almonds - Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Dov Seltzer, Itzhak Perlman [from Tradition]

so much warm glow

Hollywood Ending - Sleater-Kinney [from One Beat]

our syllable
stuck onto the notes
word splits
are ex
pected
words as syllable sets

Losing Heart - Brandi Carlile [from The Story]

is so much battle armor required
to say a thing safely?

Track 3 - The Hunting Club [recorded live at The Sound Effects Cafe, Seattle, October 26, 2012]

a simple keyboard figure repeated
from which the vocal in the first verse hangs
a scamp from an elm branch
the rest of the time on the ground

Focus "vocal" - St. Rage [completed at The Tintinabulary, Seattle, on November 12, 2017]

not your typical pop sound

Ketawang Panembah - Gamelan Pacifica [from Vessel]

homogenous color scheme
by instrument design
and pitch mode design
a malleable homogeneity
allows collaboration within it
a shared space

September 5, 2023

Lovin' Up A Storm (take 3) - Jerry Lee Lewis [from Rare and Rockin']

charming sleaze bag
charming to some
sleaze bag to many

Very Early - Bill Evans [from California, Here I Come]

the beats seem to trip over each others' feet
as though they had been re-sequenced

Jump Street - Ornette Coleman [from Of Human Feelings]

busy surface sixteenth notes
ripping by

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker - Prince [from Sign O' The Times]

a whole little flirtation at the cafe
not the Dorothy Parker the writer
the wit
a different one

Track 11 - The Humidiflyers [from Humidiflyers 2002]

same song as last
in battle with the recording
understood perhaps
without the sudden cut-off
song
an enclosed scenario
question is always
nope
cut-off

I Blame The Jews - The Capitol Steps [from O Christmas Bush]

from a mock Mel Gibson

April Fool - Tea Cozies [from Bang Up]

power pop

Only Guessing - Star Anna [from Live at Rimbert Illustration]

playing a guitar is how we sing with our hands
the motions needn't be fancy to be true

Agon - Igor Stravinsky - Los Angeles Festival Orchestra, Igor Stravinsky

fanfare of unsteady gait
divided attention
snagged
pestered

the parts have had a few too many
all of them
each and severally
even the nightwatch

a dark turn is taken
a strange and cautious alley

God Rest You Merry Gentlemen - The Philadelphia Brass Ensemble [from Festival of Carols In Brass]

a stern greeting

Zeroes - David Bowie [from Never Let Me Down]

the new Ziggy Stardust
with snazzy gizmos

paranoia porn
sequence of interstitialized vocals

piano thinking
along Thelonious's lines

we can hear the size of the studio
it's a real place
the drums are muffled like cardboard boxes

I self describe my outfit
I hope they don't ruin this song by tacking on an ad
I'm kinda digging it
damn they did
oh well

Piano Concerto in C minor, Op. 18, first movement - Serge Rachmaninoff [from 100 Greatest Classics]

great cinemetography

O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded live at The Tintinabulary, Seattle, November 21, 2019]

of music and its parts

Bathing - Wang Lu - Stephanie Lamprea [from Quaking Aspen]

hyper expressed words
harsh sound
really getting into the particulars of imagined horrors

Symphony in G minor "1905", op. 103 (#11) - Dmitri Shostakovich - Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz

light changes dimly
troubled memory
sullen containment

an orchestra of what 80?
all trained to perform exact acts
to enact this re-enactment

a hubbub boils up
seethes down
as we were
subito activity up front
ends in weary sadness
from which we move to more heavily laden sadness
grim resolve
the songs will be sung firmly now
back to that monk in his cell at the beginning of Boris
inert
activity somewhere near

September 7, 2023

Penny Lane - The Beatles [from Anthology]

in celebration of benign civil service
bankers policemen firemen nurses barbers
things to be
typical genders unquestioned

See How We Are - X [from See How We Are]

the process of anthemization blurs distinctions among their subjects
all fade into a blob of subject matter

Misty - Glenn Tate [from Some of My Favorite Love Songs]

the pianist disappears behind dreamy memory fog

The Island Life - Peter Fedofsky [from The City of Good Neighbors]

fear of circumnavigability

Hills - Chris Brokaw [from Stories]

personal messages
below the radar
among the equally lost

I'm With You - Lures [from There's No Pressure]

from word's point of view
song is poetry with a specific pronunciation
from music's point of view
song is an analytical statement
about a poetry

Part 5 - Claire Lodge [from Seconds]

the articulation point is not cadence
but arrival
at time point
at downbeat
or its subsidiaries

Raunchy - Bill Justis [from Sun Records Definitive Hits]

an instrumental back when such could be a country hit

Don't Go Home (My Little Darling) - Shirelles [from The Shirelles Anthology]

dances from a simpler time

European sacred signifier

unadorned
homophonic
syllabic melody
clear articulation of cadences
the soprano line is uncomfortable in its wimple

Lullaby - Mariah Carey [from Charmbracelet]

lines drift toward the top of the mouth cavity
a dance song
finds a groove
and spins its words around that

Dreams and Drunkenness - Curtains For You [from Heaven's Waiting]

In Seattle
in my experience
there is very little dancing going on in dive bars
those who are there to hear the bands
crowd up front
which can occasionally result in a mosh pit
which is a sort of mob dance
but mostly there's standing and bobbing
standing and bobbing in a crowd
is a popular pastime

Haunt Me - Red Ribbon [from Time Is Running Out]

composed from the words

Kitchen - Keith Eisenbrey [November 14, 2017]

putting things away
with their clinks and hinge squeaks
running sink water

In Session at The Tintinabulary

September 3, 2023

Slade - Keith Eisenbrey

Another arrangement of an old shape-note tune.

In The Unknown Tongue - Jim Knodle

I made a recording of Jim's piece, leaning into its hymnodic melody and phraseology.

September 4, 2023

Gradus 388 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

number count
quantity
size
we count things
we perceive quantities
do we?
and proportions
when?
keeping track of it as it goes
a memory skill?
a psychic trap?
discipline
attend to the smallest instance of now that you can
eschew memory
shun prophecy
gesture attempts to jostle me off task
get right down inside these
sound itself
as an experience that (physically) requires time to happen in
and to be perceived in
jostles us out of instant perception
there is no instant instance of sound

like the Quasha question
when is the meaning of a sentence
before it gets there?

that A
for so many years
the root
the tonic
 transformed now
to a flatted mediant
the method
(global)
of sequencing the new pitches in Gradus
some from the bottom (left) (like A)
some from the top (right) (like E)
tends to obscure their relationships to each other
from his nomenclature
without also knowing the order in which the pitches make their appearance:
A E C-sharp G B D F-sharp
constructing a D Major collection
starting from its Dominant Seventh segment
plus the Subdominant
pulling the final trigger on D Major (D Aeolian)
by means of its mediant

I have begun sharing collections of my compositions in albums on Bandcamp. AKU was composed in 1981 for the Synclavier in the Department of Systematic Musicology at the University of Washington, and Book of Windows occupied my time between graduation and launching myself at the East coast in 1982.

Keith Eisenbrey 1: 1979-1981

These are the keyboard works I composed while an undergrad at the UW.

Preface

"'A prettier foot, a gayer heart, a more dimpled face, or smarter form, never bounded so lightly over the earth they graced, as did those of Maria Lobbs, the old saddler's daughter. There was a roguish twinkle in her sparkling eyes that would have made its way to far less susceptible bosoms than that of Nathaniel Pipkin; and there was such a joyous sound in her merry laugh that the sternest misanthrope must have smiled to hear it. Even old Lobbs himself, in the very height of his ferocity, couldn't resist the coaxing of his pretty daughter; and when she and her cousin Kate - an arch, impudent-looking, bewitching little person - made a dead set upon the old man together, as, to say the truth, they very often did, he could have refused them nothing, even had they asked for a portion of the countless and inexhaustible treasures which were hidden from the light in the iron safe.'"

Charles Dickens - from "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club"

Texts

Recorded

February 5, 2023

Souls of the Departed -Bruce Springsteen [from Lucky Town]

lazy production
pile it on
be sure no aspect is allowed out of the mass
replicating the stadium space
to demonstrate he's a big stadium selling-out caliber of dude-star

Dead Man Walking (Moby Mix 1) - David Bowie [from Earthling]

this replicates nothing outside of the recorded sound sound
is a dance mix meant for dancing?
yes we presume
but what to make of the spacy drumless bits

Sonata in G minor, Op. 1 "The Devil's Trill" - Giuseppe Tartini - Gil Shahan [from Masters of the Bow]

prayer aria
pious humble

carefree
enjoying every bit of a pleasant stroll

back to humble prayer
but only for a moment

the sun is shining
sly adventures await
can't decide where it wants to be at the end

Banned Rehearsal 720 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Neal Kosály-Meyer [May 21, 2007]

drum bass and guitar
one amp each
not drum
one of the amps has a scratchy throat
dully muted sound
without presence or authority
rendering all moments any
no moment unlike all
stuck
paralyzed
it suddenly gels though
finds strange feedback tongues
selective harmonic extractions
a lake in the mountains in the evening
no one there to hear it breathe
bass has transformed itself into a feedback piper
shushes down into pianissimo
with scribbles
scratchy throat acts up again
connection issues
clipped off guitar comments
sounds like an otamatone
have he we had it so long?

Tidal Mud - Chris Brokaw [from Tidal Mud]

the angry roar of acres of grumpy clams
grumbling of crabs
from the heart of the muck
herd of giant geoduck raging at their luck

February 6, 2023

Gradus 315 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [July 10, 2017]

"the original score was a thought that came into my head"
dependent on the kinds of sounds
proceeding selectively
using regular American pennies
3 Rungs for Kent Karnofski
(who witnessed)
explanation to begin it
and now to begin:

once a harmonic emerges in conscious experience
can it be put back?

timbre
a clump of harmonics
still in the box
packed at the factory
but only after they're out

quiet clumps stay packed longer
melodic complications bundle them more tightly also

is it possible to hear notes as they might have been heard
prior to its having been demonstrated that timbre is a synthesis?

does making sense of music make sense?
isn't it perverse?

we can make sense of the words we apply to music
because they're words and not the music to which they have been applied.

timbre is how it sounds as an object
the sense of a sound being the sound of an object
made by an object
emanating from an object
what it is
is not the sound
but our identification
in the raw
of the object making that sound

piano
bird
train
speaker

Fallen Victories - Steve Peters [from With My Back to the World]

an image of open strings bowed
just that no more

Permanente vierge, plus digne que - Johannes Ockeghem - Blue Heron, Scott Metcalfe

ropes of rope self entwining

Corrente, Fvb. 223 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

the binary outline is on the modern end of the Fitzwilliam collection
somewhat removed from the vocal polyphonic model of Byrd and Company
(or it is just one of the early forms found therein
that happened to persist into later centuries)

L'Euridice, Scene V - Giulio Caccini - Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Matteo Bellotto, Anna Simboli, Marco Scavazza, Monica Piccinini, Raffaele Giordani, Silvia Frigato, Mauro Borgioni

two voices trading lines
moving with regularity in ample measures

Sonata in A Major, Kk. 219 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

move stop
turn stop
split
continue
dance repeat

lift
set down
group
stop

regroup
let's take that again shall we

String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 50 #3 - Franz Joseph Haydn - Tatrai Quartet

1
figures will get loose and run amok
always a step ahead

2
the meal will proceed according to custom
your lines are at your place
transgression unthinkable
a weary sadness
mood descends
mood improves
by drollery and wit

3
slinks at the end of the period
otherwise vigorous and forthright

4
a game of glances across conversation

February 7, 2023

Sonata in G Major, Op. 31 #1 - Ludwig van Beethoven - Paul Badura-Skoda

1
the opening figure of quick rhythmic offsets
instantiates sound in the upper register
before that sound's register would speak as harmonics
from the low note
like eating one's cake and then having it

2
the strength of the banal
is that it removes any need to attend to the larger shape
allowing attention to shift toward other matters
of a more ominous complexion
or of delight
the tune can be ignored
in favor of the details
of how the tune behaves in new company

3
no idea is left behind
we're in for the whole ride

Funeral March in C minor, Op. 72 #2 - Frédéric Chopin - Garrick Ohlsson

sharp edges
voice leading cuts at a slant
both parts deal with how music sits in its registers

Goodbye, I've Left the World Behind - Rev. T. T. Rose [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

self-contained
our participation as listeners
is beside the point of anything this music is doing

Smarty (You Know It All) - Count Basie [from The First Records He Ever Made]

brass and reeds comment on each other
under and upon
trumpet solo
then sax solo
piano does a little dance

I've Got a Date With a Dream - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

pianist is bubbling away in the back
butterfly tummy
only in the mix
when Billie sings
how like the baroque

harp used as specialty guitar
bye bye

Nobody Like You - Aretha Franklin [from Young, Gifted and Black]

a personal letter
if this is how you feel
this is what you say
an example for study
and a model for imitation

Mr. Suit - Wire [from Pink Flag]

not shaped like a single
doesn't hang around long enough to have a hook
refreshing

Ghetto Defendent - The Clash [from Combat Rock]

with Allen Ginsberg no less
short cycle harmonies
start anywhere
no plot to need catching up with
moral outrage is the new serious

The Boy in the Bubble - Paul Simon [from The Essential Paul Simon]

orchestrated and recorded with due care
no expense spared but it is still people playing
clearly flesh and blood

Anger In The Nation - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth [from Mecca and the Soul Brother]

goes by fast
distracted by sudden rhymes

Gradus 30 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [November 5, 2002]

melodic pitch intervals
are entirely conceptual
leaving no acoustic residue
harmonic pitch intervals
are an aspect of the sound
of two pitches
heard at the same time
a quality of the sound
they make together

melodic
a quality of the gap
between pitches heard in sequence
relating the pitch we heard
with a pitch that occurred
prior
but
that we no longer hear

mapped in our throats
(the interval
is what it would feel like to sing those pitches in sequence)
wherein we experience pitch
from within

acoustic residue
what the activity of music making produces
as a signal
or physical trace
writing vibrations into the medium
inscribed upon the entire volume of heard space

February 8, 2023

Juggle Bills - The Capitol Steps [from O Christmas Bush]

relies on its humor

Roller Big - Keith Eisenbrey [October 9, 2012]

we were doing some linoleum repair work
and had rented a roller that made a great sound in action
I recorded an improvisation on it
then slowed it down for fun
dropping the pitch

Attention - Low Hums [from Night Magic Wine]

entrance music
here comes the road movie opening credits

Banned Telepath 93 Tintinabulary - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Aaron Keyt [October 24, 2022]

busy squirrels poking everywhere
constant diligence
scribbly energy
calmer now
gong and orb rolling in a pan
surfaces of substances
wood metal
time is marked in several registers
busy again
but with softer surfaces

Corrente, Fvb. 224 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

balancing phrases
in balancing periods
or
an ordered world

On the Banks of the Old Tennessee - Mr. & Mrs. J. W. Baker [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

music for themselves and their neighbors
songs shared much as among native communities
the greater the travel among which communities
the further the songs spread

Just Dream of You - Norfolk Jazz Quartet [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

they don't concern themselves with letting on where one is
it's there
but they have crazier things to do
not just some folks gathered to sing
this has been arranged with some serious chops

Parker's Mood - Charlie Parker [from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes]

a book with front and back covers
and pages of lonely evenings

The Sadder But Wiser Girl For Me - Meredith Wilson [from The Music Man, Original Cast Recording]

comic show tune

Do You Know Him? - The Staple Singers [from Hammer and Nails]

electric guitar reverb
sounds like a gymnasium

Walk On By - Morgana King [from Gemini Changes]

ascendance of the new standards
Broadway left behind

Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire - Joni Mitchell [from For The Roses]

centered on the way the text goes along
articulated by the chorus
which changes as it moves along
some money was spent on musicians and production

You Should Have Never Opened That Door - Ramones [from Leave Home]

a mosh band plays for the pit
and its happy communal memories

Blues in the Morning - Walt Wagner [from The Evening Muse]

too much to drink
or someone up and left

Assembly Rechoired 36 - Hillary Butler, Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Dan Sedia [October 14, 1987]

we should talk like crickets
can't make my legs do that
outside on the grass
with the crickets or whatever they are
former knowledge of cones
we make pitches with our voices
and with a whistle
and with a thumb piano
wind noise
the kind produced by some high pitched noise on analog tape
might be from the kind of microphone used being overtaxed
but any recording is a distortion of its original
somebody is singing loudly in the distance
now immortalized
wedge head people of Bard
the Iliad is not what they think it is
we discuss Guinea Pigs and Matthew
fish heads instead of wedges
Robin the Squirrel
mushroom heads
hay swamps
before the temple
wedge heads shrink
at the mouth of the temple
is this primitive art
just like pine cones
moving easily from music to conversation
without a thought to posterity and its posteriors
we're not interesting to cats
we don't smell like tuna
the sunshine has moved
let's move into the sun
we move into it
and could plant wheat on it
we look small next to the tall weeds
the proper hayseed attitude
how carpenters sit
when they eat their hot dogs
in the Winter
nirvana
or a good crop
it's a wild onion
not a cool field to be in
the frog fell over
Davy and Goliath put together
snazz jazz

Howdy Do - Guthrie Family [from Woody's 20 Grow Big Songs]

a song for everybody he met

The One - Mariah Carey - from [Charmbracelet]

winding a ball of yarn
separate briefly
back to the whole ball
the purpose of the brief separateness
is back to the yarn ball

February 9, 2023

Gradus 120 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [May 28, 2007]

features two As
far enough apart registrally
(4th and 7th up)
that the higher's pitch
is not easily
independently
discernible
among the lower's harmonics
but
now and then
played together
in a balance
such that
the higher is soft enough
to masquerade among them
a synthetic
quasi timbre

hands on exercise
to strengthen mind's focus on small details of sound
ear-mind training

great excitement
a denser series of the low As
played mezzo forte
pedal down

still
not all alike
notes are coming thick and quick now
the stately motions of clouds
no scudding here

Jesus Christ - Ian Bell, John Teske [from Embers of Discontent (first mix)]

only marginally about its namesake

Soundcheck - Your Mother Should Know [recorded live at Victory Lounge, July 15, 2017]

fan talk
breaks string in the introduction

B12 Dreams (22 EDO) - Jostaberry [from Hello Turbine]

22 equal intervals per octave I think
tonal range as narrow as many cyclic chord songs
thick rhythmic aural texture
how the track is composed has more impact on the image
than the bespoke pitch collection

Corrente, Fvb. 225 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

quick up
slow down
slower down

:||:

down
down from high
down in several steps

:||

slow up arpeggio

The Moore Girl - Andrew and Jim Baxter [from Turn Me Loose White Man]

fiddle holds while guitar chords turn around it
then they both hold still
then back to it
fiddle finds another place for a moment
first high
then low
back to it

Stardust on the Moon - Tommy Dorsey [from That Devilin' Tune]

clear when it comes back around again
short verses
orchestrated new each time

New York City Blues - Duke Ellington [from That Devilin' Tune]

really into legato
smooth reeds
a little sass at Gershwin there
parts of chords trade places
final chord
a crowd gathered around the key

Rocker - Miles Davis [from Birth of the Cool]

no reason to move
until there is a reason so to do
stay within bounds
until all is heard

Putty - Shirelles [from The Shirelles Anthology]

putty putty putty
uh huh
hunk of clay
what the guys wanted to hear
or what the girls thought the guys wanted to hear
passive feminine
with DIY punk attitude

Stella By Starlight - Bill Evans [from California, Here I Come]

persists in disappearing
until all that is left
is everything

now let's move over here
then
in a puff of stardust
gone

I Know - Bonnie Raitt [from Give It Up]

in imitation of Aretha
with excellent crew

I Feel It In My Heart - Talking Heads [from Talking Heads: 77]

the backing singers
as imitated by the solo vocal
one lengthy episode

Temptation - Screamin' Jay Hawkins [from Frenzy]

pity me
to continue
never be
in chromatic descent and
the crowd gathers round the body

The Holly and the Ivy - London Symphony Orchestra [from Songs For The Holidays]

vile noxious weeds both
over-arranged

Check the Rhime - A Tribe Called Quest [from Low End Theory]

tight

February 10, 2023

Gradus 31 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [November 26, 2002]

pitches sharing screenspace
regimented
attention direction

Song for Ludmilla - Tom Baker Quartet [from Look What I Found]

birds are in the yard
stop look listen forage

Roller - Keith Eisenbrey [October 9, 2012]

see above
this is the original recording
at pitch
trigger warning
metal squeals

Romadame - Amy Denio [from The Big Embrace]

calling card lyric
vivid graphic shifts of color
and massed voices of Amy

Banned Telepath 93 South - Steve Kennedy [October 24, 2022]

no clue
metals clang
incoming signals broadcast
strings pluck

in regard to overlays:
if track A
is designed for maximal intercomprehension
then
if track B is overlain upon track A
the result
will tend to gray out the maximal intercomprehension
of both track A and of track B
unless
track B is designed
to mesh with track A
and reinforce it or transform it
if neither
track A
nor track B
is designed for such maximal intercomprehension
then
the overlay of one upon the other
stands less chance of such graying out occurring
they interact freely

why two Banned Rehearsal type tracks
overlain
make a more interesting experience
than that of two Bach cantatas
so overlain

or

maximal intercomprehensible composition
seen as a defense against transformation

Gradus 376 - Neal Kosály-Meyer

1
volume spatial
a place in which notes roll like otters
there is a moment within each note's span
before the higher partials emerge
proto-timbral

2
stubborn insistence

Minute Etudes (Book 1), Furtive, Lively, Playful - Emily Doolittle

I finally managed to get reasonably accurate recordings of the first, third, and fifth of this little set of piano pieces by Emily.

Preface

"The dark grotto was laid open to its core
as if the earth had cracked under some force,
gaping to the heart of Hell, the pallid lands
loathed by the gods; as if the vast abyss below
were visible, and ghosts trembled at the light."

Vergil - "The Aeneid" (translated by Shadi Bartsch)

Cedar / The End of the Line
Kaley Lane Eaton
with Chris Icasiano, Kayce Guthmiller, Sarah Pizzichemi, Tom Baker, Heather Bentley, Leanna Keith, Ha Yang Kim
Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

the stage is connected
with cables
microphones
plugs
and lights
the orchestra waits behind the piano
small drum kit to the right
a complex of music stands and 3 microphones on the left
in front of them
a single chair and one mic
orchestra comes forward to play
chords hang around
and breathe gently
song
as decorated
or furnished space
low center of gravity
pulling everything downward
and in-world
relies for meaning on its lyrics ?
for which the music is a presentation ?
a colorful one
an enabler
or carrier
not a question of whether music should be more or other than that
but whether it can be or no
a generational thing ?

Kaley assembled a magnificent crew
I was frankly puzzled
which is to say
that my listening head was asking myself a lot of questions
about how the verbal component
hangs with the non-verbal component
but upon reflection since that time
I may be finding a head space
that makes sense for me
concerning what she is doing
what might that head space be
the relations pertaining among
her comfort with the vernacular-derived chordal-cyclicity she is doing
and
her comfort with the gloriously oddball accretions her band adds upon it
she quipped at one point
that all her compositions are in A Major
I humbly suggest in that regard
she talk to Neal Kosály-Meyer
who spent ten plus years playing nothing but A naturals
I admire both her engagement (total)
and her integrity
which is to say that
onstage
she is never anyone but herself
there is no act
no projected persona
that isn't
clearly
just her

From Recent Arrivals

May 7, 2022

6 or 7 Miles After - Jostaberry [from Hello Turbine]

a beat that cycles
but
of which the circling point
moves around
like spinning spokes
post-Eno
post-Barrett
it does melt down into a four count regularity at some point

May 13, 2022

Rich Girl - Nina Simone [from Baltimore]

big orchestra production
drums
two percussionists
bass guitar
strings
backup singers
a taunt and advice

Chronology - Ornette Coleman [from The Shape of Jazz to Come]

not fitted to the beat
but fitting it on the fly
like Ozone the super
spinning ice

Jump for Joy - Peggy Lee [from Jump for Joy]

another big orchestra production
all the Vegas show biz glitz
that can be got

Bambi - Prince [from Prince]

solid sound
not compressed out of countenance
that is
well engineered
a quality product

Sung Song - Robert Morris - Heather Gardner [from Robert Morris at 70]

soprano
and the space around their voice
gong
and the space around its space
clapping sounds
and the sound around its space
not
clearly
the same spaces
not
clearly
not the same spaces
gong and clapping connect across the long lines
among which
they space themselves
by means of that long lined sung space
and the similarity of their apparent punctuational function within the rhetorical space
whistle sound
and its space
then connect to each
by the same means
and count
and gong
pitched
one iteration
clap
unpitched
two iterations
then sung and clapped simultaneously
so simple
so clear

Consider the Birds 33 - Keith Eisenbrey [February 3, 2007]

if a bird chorus sound could be sliced thin
for microscopic survey
and each slice separated
slices not corresponding to the sound of any one bird
but to some systematically sampled selection of the whole
those slices
might sound like these

Makin' Our House a Honkytonk - Rachel Harrington [from Makin' Our House a Honkytonk]

honkytonk; n. 1. a dancing and drinking establishment
2. a social space in which the dancing and its music and the drinking all act as social lubrication and are so socially coded

Regular - Your Mother Should Know [recorded live at Victory Lounge, Seattle, March 27, 2017]

dive bar music is both lubricant and badge
its art is only what is necessary
to be a sufficient badge
and a sufficient lubricant

Now You Know - Doug Kolmar [from So Said Life]

life's lessons
at the further end of adulthood
let the party begin
gets a tad didactic

Praeludium, Fvb 115 - John Bull - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

prelude
an establishing progression
or series
as anchor
a ground
a foundation

Tibi Lau, Tibi Gloria - Peter Philips - The Tudor Consort, Peter Walls [from Cantiones Sacrae Quinis Vocubus]

composed echo
virtual cathedral
as praeludium
within actual cathedral
the inner life

Sonata in G Major, Kk. 180 - Domenico Scarlatti - Pieter-Jan Belder

the disparate figures are delineated
as figures like the others
by virtue of being directly repeated
if you hear it twice
it's a thing
its cycling
defines it
likewise
with the larger segments that repeat

String Quartet in G minor, Op. 20 #3 - Franz Joseph Haydn - The Kodály Quartet

1
musical head rhyme memory key

2
menuet theme uses an end rhyme for its initial presentation

3
well-voice-led homophony with internal polyphony
the sort of movement that kept Beethoven up at nights
internal peace

4
tonal dramatics
opening figure has similarities to opening of 1
and then
is also an initial-presentation-of-the-menuet's end rhyme figure
exit muttering
stage left

Waltz in G minor, Op. 69 #2 - Frédéric Chopin - Alfred Cortot (1943)

regular waltz
becomes fitted with new joinings
that turn in midair
fluidly

May 8, 2022

Hyena Stomp (take 3) - Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers [from Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers, Chicago Days]

laugh solo
with exact vowels
mostly heh and hah
as might to rhyme
with hep and hop

Let's Call The Whole Thing Off - Billie Holiday [from Lady Day, The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia]

many of the same considerations
in improvised accompaniment used here
were also considerations
in baroque continuo improvisation

Bird's Nest - Charlie Parker [from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes]

the drum intro isn't enough
for us to get our bearing
before we are swept away
I like his piano player
Erroll Garner I think

Ah-Leu-Cha - Miles Davis [from 'Round About Midnight]

quick 8 bar cycle
punctuated by drum breaks
also 8 bars

Pli Selon Pli - Pierre Boulez - BBC Symphony Orchestra, Pierre Boulez

1
the orchestra disappears into singularities
points forming a thin bright texture
its edges are exact
given to sudden attacks
or birdquick movements the
vegetation has sharp thorns
and would rather you step back
for all of that
it proceeds clearly in a symphonic movement mindset

2
a movement need not contrast affectually
as is the convention
it might be
a different walk through the same landscape

3
or
the between moments
are articulation points
generated from some internal process
but not the only such in an active state

4
or
chapters at different events of the same story
in the same voice
or
the same location in different weathers
or
the same weather at different locations
an increase in air pressure
a different constriction
gestures are its bricks
pitch its mortar
every note
is ever so evidently
produced
made
physically
people's bodies are involved

5
begins at night
nearer dawn than mid
but not much nearer
turmoil and alarms
another bureaucratic nightmare process
are we all rolling downhill
in all of which senses
this is a Romantic Symphony

May 9, 2022

Just You, Just Me - Thelonious Monk [from Standards]

two or three notes at a time
not much more
as accompaniment to the first sax solo

"The Gold it's in the . . ." - Pink Floyd [from Obscured By Clouds]

the music is a transport
decked out with decals
by guitar man
with some lyrics along for the ride

We Are Hungry Men - David Bowie [from Starting Point]

the legacy of Malthus
with bad accents
and too much message

Bo Diddley - Moe Tucker [from I Feel So Far Away]

recasting the BD beat
as a march

The Skaters Waltz - Émile Waldteufel [from 100 Greatest Classics, Volume 5]

goes to great lengths to not confuse the dancers

92 = (30, 32, 139) + (108c, 108d) - Anthony Braxton - The New York Composer's Orchestra [from First Program in Standard Time]

as I understand Braxton's naming scheme
this would be a combination of six separate compositions
played variously
in sequence
or simultaneously
loves the big instrumental choirs
playing in rhythmic unison

E.S.P. - Shonen Knife [from Brand New Knife]

the song goes around and around
in various loops
count is important
so it will ship easily

Gradus 9 - Neal Kosály-Meyer [April 2, 2002]

my journal entry for Gradus 9
May 10, 2022

Waiting Room - The Tom Baker Quartet [from Look What I Found]

impulses circulate
nervously
dendritic

Solo for Sliding Trombone - John Cage - Stuart Dempster [recorded live at the Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd Center, Seattle, May 25, 2012]

as I recall
Stu made as nearly no sound as possible
for a good while
then
some canid yelps and grumbles

with what might one fill
an otherwise empty container
whatever the choice
the person of the one doing the filling of it
will pervade it
to the extent
that one
is engaged
in the activity of filling it
in Stu's case
that would be
nearly
totally
pervasive

Albright & Kalm - 5-Track [from Trio]

fully realized melodic sensibility
within a rootsy rock vibe
nice guitars

Banned Telepath 84 Lost Again - Steve Kennedy [March 28, 2022]

imbuing sounds with superball bounce
hurl them to the pavement
and watch 'em go
tap tap tiny taps
a loop device has a mind of its own
provides commentary
pulls sounds aside
and shares them in another room
white noise cycle
change up
guitar away
drums and friends arrive
new party
let's play Fibber McGee
guitar returns
what's going on

Praeludium Dor. Fvb 116 - John Bull - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

up 4 steps
then back down 2 steps
the fancy way
in ornate costumery
then it gets complicated

To-Wa-Ba-Ca - Louis Dumaine [from Allen Lowe's That Devilin' Tune]

studious thinking
when it comes down to it
4 syllables
4 notes

Little Queen of Spades (DAL 395-1) - Robert Johnson [from The Complete Recordings]

the melody differs from other of his blues melodies
only insofar as it is necessary
to articulate the different lyrics
it is not important to him
that every music be as distinct
as we might think or desire

In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down - Lead Belly [from Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Lead Belly Legacy Volume 1]

a rubric
for publication of private troubles
a message board

Drown In My Own Tears - Ray Charles [from Ray Charles]

count to 4 slow
eight times
for the payoff
tag on ending

I Told You So - Aretha Franklin [from The Electrifying Aretha Franklin]

shoulda listened to her the first time dude

Prelude in G minor - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded at the Tintinabulary, Seattle, on April 8, 2022]

pretty good I think
might have gauged the decrescendo better
but other than that acceptable

Powder Blue Mercedes Queen - Paul Revere and The Raiders [from The Legend of Paul Revere]

raunchy pickup song
or a leer among the guys

Wink Dinkerson - Cheech & Chong [from Cheech & Chong]

communication issues on several levels
finish with a fart joke

Complete Control - The Clash  [from The Clash]

home built rod
doesn't go fast
but has cool details
hidden compartments

within any empire
there are those disaffected from without
and those disaffected from within

Alligator Wine - Screamin' Jay Hawkins [from Frenzy]

is it my coffin
that's going to sneeze
or my carpet
monkey laugh

Assembly Rechoired 19 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey [March 28, 1987]

pluckers
small ones
lap dulcimer and bug guitar
moved to the slide whistle
all switch around
readjust posture
guiro and vocalizations
in syllables without consonants
soft bugle blats

vowel language
excites the guiro

whistles rattles and hoots
the dulcimer persists
sans 'ts'
hound whimper
flute and toy piano
probably still the jaymar
now a ruin
typical quiet Seattle evening at home

May 11, 2022

Let's Get Away From It All - Morgana King [from This Is Always]

witty alliteration signals sophistication
echoed in the small club
soft touch
combo

Banned Rehearsal 476 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey, Anna K, Aaron Keyt, Neal Kosály-Meyer [December 20, 1997]

arching your back at the top of your voice
avoid sacrilegious excitement
be invited
be unaware of your own presence
bury the sound
I've only this little gown
do not inflate
do not torment yourself
on a stage sounds are made and words are spoken
the walls sit in the audience seats
with their microphones
accepting it all
an amplified sound
will be stained with its amplification
even at several removes of further amplification
||: He is Eric Satie :||

I forbid reading the text aloud as part of the performance
and will return from the dead to enforce it
my work is pure photometrics
I rise at 7:18 inspired
my servant takes my temperature
and gives me a new one
piano works with a figure
smelt in the trombone
the consequences are serious
there are students who never see their teacher
we would be going nowhere
we get quiet
no more baldness
we begin again with noise
spoken words
spoken to no-one in particular
create a virtual stage
and a presumptive audience
different than the sounds with which it finds itself
a recognizable style of music
can have a similar effect
we settle back down again
drifting into a space alone with itself
low tone on piano
violin
something in a bowl
jabs of sudden sounds
interspersed whistle and percussion
violin morphs from door hinge to donkey
then settles between them
ends as an old saw

{from my journal entry of October 25, 2005:

Aaron and Neal chatter soundlessly
Aaron listally
listly
instructions
words distract from sound
it takes great concentration
to not hear words as words
tea is Eric Satie
he is
at the very end gets somewhere
low piano
violin and percussion}

Gap 8 - J. K. Randall [from Open Space 21]

solid poetry
tiny stitches
coded patterns
if a tone sits still
it sits still
deal wid' it

Consider the Birds 20 - Keith Eisenbrey [February 3, 2007]

regular enough to come across as regular
though every pulse is unique
and there are passing waves of other regularities
mostly two pulses
in a tight group
occasionally three
for a while
in a pattern of 5 pulses
if two are sounds
then next three are silent

Echoes - Yuni in Taxco [from Prizes]

riding in the backseat
family car
nowhere in particular vibe
the vocal has an effect applied to it
which obscures the words
forwarding the round and round cyclicity
going through a tunnel now

You Ruined It When You Hugged Me Back - Your Mother Should Know [recorded live at Victory Lounge, Seattle, on March 27, 2017]

not about sophistication at all
nor tidiness
proximate harmony

Potential vs Eventual pt. 1 - noisepoetnobody [from Potential vs Eventual]

droids making droids
industrial layers
no outside to it
minding its remorseless task

May 12, 2022

Praeludium Fvb. 117 - Traditional - Claudio Columbo [from The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book]

a bit of fancy to check the tuning

Tin Roof Blues - Sol Hoopi, Leon Roppolo, Paul Mares, George Brunies, Ben Pollack [from Allen Lowe's Really The Blues]

a baroque aria fully embellished
not that the baroque folks invented the blues
but
that they share certain salient characteristics
continuo
solid rhythm section
with composed harmony
filled in on the spot
and singer
embellishing a simple tune
that is
they put themselves together
in similar ways
in the wild

Peaceful Valley - Buddy Spencer Trio [from Evans 78s]

has a distinctly songwritten feel to it
fancy chords
sophisticated sentimental rural
country life without farm work

Shorty's Got to Go - Bill Johnson and His Musical Notes [from Allen Lowe's That Devilin' Tune]

tell a story with commentary
in importuning sleeve pulling rhythm

Here Comes Santa Claus - Elvis Presley [from Elvis' Christmas Album]

perfectly enjoyable
for no other reason than that Elvis is all in

Matchbox - The Beatles [from First Live Recordings, Volume 2]

this blues is not as baroque in feel
but the guitar solo is essentially
an elaborate embellishment

Prelude in F Major - Lockrem Johnson - Keith Eisenbrey [recorded March 18, 2022]

not yet
I just don't like this slow tempo
too lugubrious
it needs a lighthearted lilt

Girl Don't Take You Love - Michael Jackson [from Got To Be There]

words of a man
in a boy
did it ever stop being an act

Echo Sonata for Two Unfriendly Groups of Instruments - P.D.Q. Bach [from Portrait of P.D.Q. Bach]

surely he was tired of his own jokes by then
trapped by success

Gardening at Night - REM [collected from Nancy's Mix]

descending melodically
a short distance
at different rates
with different steps
but always between the same two notes

In Session at the Tintinabulary

May 9, 2022

Assembly Rechoired 61 - Karen Eisenbrey, Keith Eisenbrey

Karen and I took a nice walk
with air traffic
ground traffic
footsteps
birds
and one young person
coasting a noise-vehicle
past us
down the path
in the park
and yelling about it

May 12, 2022

Joshua Tree Prelude 13 - Aaron Keyt

Prelude in A Major - Keith Eisenbrey

Prelude in B-flat Major - Ken Benshoof

I'll give this one another attempt
just to get the last dyad exactly simultaneous
otherwise this sounds like what I hear the prelude doing
